Page 2 MEASHAM MESSENGER Snippets Of News, Information & Appeals Fish & Chip Charity Suppers SIA (Spinal Injuries Association) are hosting a nationwide Fish & Chip Supper on Friday 17 th May . It is an attempt to raise much needed awareness and funds for support and information for spinal injury sufferers and their families. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your home, work or perhaps at a larger venue like a local Community Centre. SIA will provide a fundraising pack and information on this initiative by calling Elizabeth Wright on 0845 0714350 or email [email protected] . FREE Health Checks There will be FREE health checks organised by the Council at a Well Families Clinic in Measham on Tuesday 23 rd April. The event will be held at St Laurence’s Church Hall and will run from 2.00pm – 6.30pm . No appointment is necessary . Checks will include cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass screening. There will be advice on offer on a range of health issues including smoking, diet, nutrition and posture. The afternoon will offer fun exercise challenges with prizes for all ages and a range of fruit juices to try along with a free pedometer to count daily steps. For further information contact Julie Summerton on 01530 454541 . Measham Townswomen’s Guild The Guild meet every second Monday of the month at Measham Village Hall on Queen Street. Meetings commence at 7.00pm . The Annual General Meeting is on Monday 11 th March and is for (Continued on page 3) MEASHAM MESSENGER Page 3 (Continued from page 2) members only. ‘Choose How You Move’ Facebook Launches A new Facebook page set up by Leicestershire County Council where people can share and receive information on walking, cycling and bus travel in Leicestershire has launched. It is an opportunity to post your views on travel and list upcoming events. Newlands House Fete - Netherseal A date for your diary this summer is the above fete. The event will take place on Saturday 8 th June between 12.00pm – 5.00pm . There will be stalls, live music, acts, performances and refreshments. Displays and exhibits include model boats and birds of prey. There will also be a fun dog show and an RAF flypast. Entrance will be £1.50 (Parking on site) and under 12’s will be FREE . All funds raised will support Newlands House(Leonard Cheshire Disability Home). Women’s World Day Of Prayer This year’s Women’s World Day Of Prayer service will be held on Friday 1 st March at 7.00pm at St Laurence Church . The service is open to all (men and women) and has been written this year by women in France. St Charles Borromeo Bosworth Road - Rummage & Table Top Sale The above will take place on the 13 th March from 10.00am – 2.00pm. Admission is Free and car parking is available. All welcome. Dry Stone Walling Skills Course A special course in the art of learning the above ancient countryside technique is being held in Markfield on March 2 nd and 3 rd under the banner of Leicestershire County Council’s ‘Stepping Stones’ Project. The course costs £80.00 or £60 for people living in the ‘Stepping Stones ‘area and further discounts available for people receiving Jobseekers Allowance. To book a place call 0116 3057264/7221 Wildlife Photographic Exhibition Two locations in the National Forest will host 2020VISION a nationwide touring exhibition of outstanding photographs that celebrate nature, wildlife and people working together. It is made up of photographs from twenty top UK wildlife photographers who visited 20 locations including the National Forest and captured inspirational images. From the 18 th March – 7 th April the photographs can be viewed at the Delph Market Square , Swadlincote and from 10 th April – 29 th April at Calke Abbey, Ticknall. (Continued on page 4) Page 4 MEASHAM MESSENGER (Continued from page 3) Age Concern – Unwanted Cars Can Raise Money For Charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland are asking people to crunch their old cars for cash as part of a novel fund raising scheme. Under the scheme unwanted cars are collected free of charge by Giveacar(social enterprise) and either sold through an online auction or disposed of. Proceeds from the sale or scrappage are donated to Age Concern with an average donation being £100.00. For more information go to www.giveacar.co.uk/charities/age-uk-leicester-shire-and-rutland .
