Prayers are said daily at St Peter’s, at 8.30am and 5.00pm. We invite you to request prayer for people or situations that weigh heavily on your heart and mind at this time so that we can include them on a regular basis. Unless you ask otherwise, we will pray for them for two weeks from the time we receive your request. You would also have to let us know if you would also like the prayer to be used in Sunday services. If you would like to ask for a prayer, you may telephone, email or write to the Vicar (see back cover; emails may also be sent via St Peter’s website), or you may prefer to leave the prayer on the board beside the door in church. If you name somebody, please be sure that they are happy for this to happen; you may choose to use just a Christian name or be even less specific. You are; of course, welcome to join us for daily prayers at any time.

Gary writes………

Climate Change With bush fires still burning in Australia and in the Amazon, rising sea levels, melting ice in Greenland, and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than ever before, it’s hard to ignore the fact that our world in heating up. The overwhelming weight of scientific evidence is suggesting that the habitability of the earth in 30 years will be very dependent on the decisions that we make ‘today’. The creation story in Genesis tells us of something unfolding gloriously. We know that the ‘days’ spoken of in this story arrive in the right scientific order and actually cover billions of years, instead of 24 hours, and that, even before the creation of humans, it is ‘good’. There is a ‘value’ to creation prior to its value as something to be consumed for human purposes. The command to ‘fill the earth and have dominion over it’ (Gen 1.28) is qualified by the image of humans as ‘gardeners, stewards and caretakers’ (Gen 2.15); there is no scope, permission or justification given to ravage the earth. Like a potter working with clay, God makes an ‘earth creature’ from dust and breathes life into it (this is a more accurate translation of Adam than ‘man’). We share a close and common history with everything else on the planet, both animate an inanimate. We are not only brothers and sisters to other humans but also to the cosmos; you could say we are made out of ‘star dust’. But something goes wrong, and the Bible calls that ‘sin’. This untrendy little word has been overused, abused and misused across the centuries, but at its core it speaks of a breakdown in relationship with God and the world around us. We often experience ourselves as blind to and trapped within our own addictive patterns. The Bible calls us to address this behaviour and what has gone wrong as a result, and calls this ‘redemption’. In this context there is much to say for those religious orders who have emphasised simplicity of life (such as the Franciscans) and care of the earth (such as the Benedictines with their traditions of gardening). But in the day to day life of the Western Church, such simplicity and care is not always evident. Has Christianity been slow off the mark in recent years to place the Earth at the front and centre in our thinking and action? Have we ignored the unfolding story in Genesis of creation, sin and redemption? Given the growing crisis surrounding our world, ‘now’ seems like a good time for us to start reflecting on this once again and taking action!

We meet every Tuesday during term time from 10 to 11.30am in the Glebe Cottages next to St Peter’s Each session includes time for play, a Bible story, craft, drinks and songs. The adults are a very friendly group and enjoy a good chat and a cup of tea or coffee, as well as joining in with the playing and craft activities. We use a lot of glue! For more information, contact Helen Shill 007580 637767 Young children, with their parents, are always welcome at church, particularly for the Sunday 10am Family Communion service. On special festivals, we hold All-Age Worship; usually at 10am (see ‘Calendar’). St Peter’s has a spacious carpeted ‘children’s area’ near the front where parents and children can sit together, play with the toys, and take part in the worship. Just turn up! For older children, Junior Church takes place in the Glebe Cottages during the 10am service. Children attend the start of the service but leave after the first hymn, returning to church at ‘The Peace’. The activities at Junior Church are based on the same Bible readings as the adults are learning about. Ring Out Wild Bells!

Readers will have read in the pewsheet that the Leckhampton ringers have made a video recording (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qyM718Qvadc). The camera is focused on the belfry, where the bells are firmly fixed in a sturdy metal framework. Some years ago I visited a belfry in Bologna, where they have a very different style of ringing. No hands are involved - only some nimble feet! You can see this illustrated by googling “Bologna bellringing”. The flamboyant, athletic (and hazardous) Italian style is an amazing contrast to the disciplined English manner.

The Messenger, February 2020

Living as adventurous followers of Jesus Christ

We are incredibly excited about the diverse range of stories people are sharing of their living faith to help us all draw closer to God this Lent. Take our quiz and see where you could start—there’s so much to choose from.

- 17 -

The Pilgrim Way is a simple guide to the beliefs that lie at the core of the Christian faith. Even if you are not familiar with the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Commandments and Beatitudes, it is all simply explained. www.churchofengland.org/pilgrim-way has videos of real Christians sharing what helps them in their faith day by day. Get ideas and inspiration about the real difference it makes to a wide range of Christians. If you’re taking those first tentative steps into exploring faith you might want to start here. It takes things back to Christian basics to help you make sense of the hugely varied . Bishop Rachel and Bishop Robert will share a series of video conversations about faith online. They’re asking people who are considering confirmation to follow four conversation videos on our YouTube channel and come to a big question and answer session in the Cathedral on Wednesday 1 April, 7pm. There will be a diocesan confirmation service on Easter Eve (11 April, 8pm) at —speak to your parish priest for details.

Loved + Liked is a five session Lent or study group outline with a follow up celebration for Pentecost. Written by Peter Hill, it looks at questions of identity, calling and service. It includes gripping true stories of people like Dave Jeal, a self- confessed football hooligan who had no idea about God or Church until God crashed into his life so that he can never be the same again. It’s available online at lovedandliked.life with 10 supporting videos. There are limited free hard copies available for collection from 4 College Green, Gloucester GL1 2LY. Please contact Pauline Godfrey on [email protected] to arrange collection.

Shapes for Living is a free 5-week Lent course to help you find balance in your life. As faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called ‘to work for the flourishing of all people and the flourishing of the whole of creation’. ‘Life in all its fullness’ is the gift God wants for all of us. But if we are to live that calling well we will need to find a sustainable, nurturing shape for our own lives, so easily over-busy with the stressful and overwhelming demands of modern living. www.gloucester.anglican.org/your-ministry/shapes-for-living

#LiveLent: Care for God’s Creation is the Church of England's Lent Campaign for 2020. With weekly themes shaped around the first Genesis account of creation, it explores the urgent need for humans to value and protect the abundance God has created. This year’s #LiveLent challenge - 18 - offers 40 short reflections and suggested actions to help you, your family and your church live in greater harmony with God, neighbour and nature. It has been inspired and informed by the Archbishop of Canterbury's 2020 Lent Book, Saying Yes to Life by Ruth Valerio (SPCK). Children’s and adults booklets plus loads of digital materials which can be sent to your inbox daily are available from churchofengland.org/livelent

Lent Pilgrimages Bishop Rachel and Bishop Robert will be making a series of pilgrimages around the diocese through weekends in Lent. More details and locations to follow at www.gloucester.anglican.org

How do you live out your Everyday Faith? Do you find it is easy to express your Christian belief in your working week, your meeting with friends, your shopping trips, your family life and your exercise routine? Sometimes finding the confidence and the creativity to build faith into everything we do can challenge us all.

This autumn, we’re asking each benefice to nominate and enable eight people to come along to a special day of ideas, resources, activities and workshops around living out Everyday Faith. If you’re interested in representing your benefice, do speak to your vicar, or nominate someone who you think might be a good candidate to bring back inspiring ideas to your setting.
