PERSONAL STATEMENT OF RESEARCH

My research is oriented towards reduction of mortality and morbidity in under-served populations in the US and abroad. The underlying discipline bases for this research are epidemiology and biostatistics. Areas of focus for research include (1) macro and micronutrient deficiencies , (2) maternal and child health , (3) ophthalmic epidemiology and blindness prevention. In nutrition, areas of interest include community based randomized trials to evaluate the impact of various micronutrient and other low cost September 8, 2014 Curriculum Vitae 71 Joanne Katz

interventions on maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. In maternal and child health, areas of interest include community trials to evaluate efficacy of low cost interventions to improve pregnancy outcomes and infant health. Current examples are reduction in indoor air pollution, maternal influenza immunization, neonatal skin and cord infection control. In ophthalmology, areas of interest include glaucoma, cataract, trachoma, refractive errors, and ocular trauma. Keywords: Epidemiology, ophthalmology, biostatistics, survey sampling, blindness, visual impairment, neonatal and child mortality, maternal mortality, intrauterine growth restriction, prematurity, vitamin A, iron, zinc, micronutrients.
