    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 16, No. 5 (1994) THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME - THE BEGINNING By Chris Willis The Professional Football Hall of Fame located in Canton, Ohio was built to pay tribute to those players, coaches, and contributors whose outstanding feats have helped the growth of Amercia's favorite sport. For a football fan, the Hall of Fame is a nostalgic trip back through time, to reminisce about a Gale Sayers run, a Johnny Unitas to Ray Berry touchdown pass, a jarring Dick Butkus tackle, or the kicking "Toe" of Lou Groza. My first opportunity to visit the Hall of Fame came in the summer of 1985. 1 was one of 13,000 people who gathered in front of the Hall to witness, what many experts have called the second greatest class ever to be inducted (behind the charter class of 1963). The Class of '85 was comprised of football legends, such as Joe Namath, Pete Rozelle, O.J. Simpson, Roger Staubach, and old-timer's selection Frank Gatski. My memories from this ceremony are ones that I will never forget; it was a unforgettable scene. Ever since that first visit, I've been a big fan of the Hall of Fame, and starting in 1989 I've made my yearly visit to the Hall coincide with the enshrinement ceremonies and "Football's Greatest Weekend." How did I get so lucky to live only two hours away, in Columbus, Ohio, from football's greatest shrine? By the way, how did Canton become the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame? I am glad you asked.

    PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn DALLAS COWBOYS Team History In 1960, the Dallas Cowboys became the NFL’s first successful new team since the collapse of the All- America Football Conference 10 years earlier. Clint Murchison Jr. was the new team’s majority owner and his first order of business was to hire Tex Schramm as general manager, Tom Landry as head coach and Gil Brandt as player personnel director. This trio was destined for almost unprecedented success in the pro football world but the “glory years” didn’t come easily. Playing in the storied Cotton Bowl, the 1960 Cowboys had to settle for one tie in 12 games and Dallas didn’t break even until its sixth season in 1965. But in 1966, the Cowboys began an NFL-record streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons. That streak included 18 years in the playoffs, 13 divisional championships, five trips to the Super Bowl and victories in Super Bowls VI and XII. Dallas won its first two divisional championships in 1966 and 1967 but lost to the Green Bay Packers in the NFL championship game each year. Similar playoff losses the next seasons were followed by a 16-13 last-second loss to Baltimore in Super Bowl V following the 1970 season. The Cowboys were typified as “a good team that couldn’t win the big games.” But they dispelled such thought for good the very next year with a 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. The Cowboys were Super Bowl-bound three more times from 1975 to 1978.

His completion percentage is higher than that of Johnny Unitas. His quarterback rating is higher than Terry Bradshaw’s. He has more completions than Sonny Jurgensen. And he has more career passing yards than Bart Starr, Bob Griese, Len Dawson and Roger Staubach. Yet John Brodie is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The rest are. The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce – representing 1,500 businesses with a quarter-million employees – hereby nominates John Riley Brodie, the 1970 National Football League Most Valuable Player, to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. After a stellar career at Stanford University, Brodie was selected in the first round of the 1957 NFL by the San Francisco 49ers. He shared time with Y.A. Tittle during the 1957-60 seasons before becoming the team’s starter in 1961. For more than a decade Brodie led the 49ers on his way to becoming one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks. Brodie’s career totals certainly merit his enshrinement, especially when compared to his contemporaries. During a career that spanned from 1957 to 1973, Brodie threw for 31,548 yards and tossed 214 touchdowns in 201 career games. He led the league in passes completed and passing yards in 1965, 1968 and 1970 and passing touchdowns in 1965 and 1970.
