Nash told Law360. “The reason for that is a labor law principle that essentially, the parties to a collective bargaining agreement have a right to negotiate how things are handled. The latest in the list of seemingly never-ending NFL Crises was #Deflategate. Turns out, this year’s Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots let air out of nearly all of their footballs, giving them an unfair advantage in the AFC Championship Game. ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of current trends in image reparation strategies used by the National Football League (NFL) in an effort to restore goodwill with its stakeholders following perceived transgressions. The 2014/2015 NFL season is discussed and analyzed using the lens of Image Reparation Theory. This research also set out to discover whether or not the NFL’s image repair strategies were rhetorically successful. Findings include the application of three general strategies; corrective action, evasion of responsibility, and reduce offensiveness; and the five sub-strategies of defeasibility, minimization, differentiation, attack the accuser, and bolstering. The implications of this research concludes that in sports image repair, use of the contradictory strategies of corrective action with defeasibility, or corrective action used with differentiation or minimization, is not universally effective. Bolstering likely is the key strategy to apply as it is consistently successful across stakeholders. The importance of strategic and proactive organizational communication cannot be overstated, consistency in player discipline is desperately needed in the NFL, and finally, dissociation of players who have engaged in an extreme transgression is suggested. OFFENSE: WR LARRY FITZGERALD, ARIZONA CARDINALS Fitzgerald had eight catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns in the Cardinals’ 48-23 win at Chicago. His three touchdowns matched his single-game high which he accomplished in the 2008 NFC Championship Game. Including the postseason, he now has 101 career touchdown receptions, the most among active players. Fitzgerald has 19 more touchdown catches than the next wide receiver on the list (STEVE SMITH SR., 82). The performance marked his 18th career game with multiple touchdown catches (including the postseason). Fitzgerald extended his streak to 165 consecutive games with a catch, the longest active streak in the NFL and a franchise record. In his 12th season from Pittsburgh, this is Fitzgerald’s fourth career Player of the Week Award and first since Week 8, 2014. Only KURT WARNER (five) has more Offensive Player of the Week Awards in franchise history. Fitzgerald’s four Offensive Player of the Week Awards are the most among active wide receivers. OFFENSE: RB ADRIAN PETERSON, MINNESOTA VIKINGS Peterson led the NFL in rushing yards (634), rushing touchdowns (five), 100-yard rushing games (four) and scrimmage yards (716) as the Vikings went 4-1 during the month. He is one of five players in NFL history to rush for at least 600 yards and five touchdowns while averaging at least 5.0 yards per carry in November of a single season. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famers WALTER PAYTON (1977), ERIC DICKERSON (1984) and BARRY SANDERS (1997) and CHRIS JOHNSON (2009). Peterson rushed for at least 125 yards in three games during the month and became the sixth player in NFL history with at least 30 such games.
