Gettys5 1Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan; 2Suzhou Polytechnic Institute of Agriculture, China; 3Faculty of Agriculture, Kinki University, Japan; 4Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University, Japan; 5Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, University of Florida, USA ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to collect basic information on vegetation in road crack, especially in curbside crack of road, for evaluating plant biodiversity in urban landscape. A curbside crack in this study was defined as a linear space (under 20 mm in width) between the asphalt pavement and curbstone. The species composition of plants invading curbside cracks was surveyed in 38 plots along the serial National Route, over a total length of 36.5 km, in Fukuoka City in southern Japan. In total, 113 species including native plants (83 species, 73.5%), perennial herbs (57 species, 50.4%) and woody plants (13 species, 11.5%) were recorded in curbside cracks. Buried seeds were also obtained from soil in curbside cracks, which means the cracks would possess a potential as seed bank. Incidentally, no significant differences were found in the vegetation characteristics of curbside cracks among land-use types (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, P > 0.05). From these results, curbside cracks would be likely to play an important role in offering habitat for plants in urban area. -

The present-day Maroon settle- ments — Moore Town, Charles Town, and Scott's Hall in the east, and Accompong in the west — are now nearly indistin- guishable, on the surface, from other rural Jamaican villages.1 Among the things which continue to set the Maroons apart from their non-Maroon neighbors are a number of linguistic features which appear to be found only in Maroon areas. The Maroon settlements have been described by two leading authorities as "centres of linguistic conservatism" (Cassidy & Le Page 1980: xli); but very little substantial documentation has yet appeared in print to back up this claim.2 While conducting an ethnographic study among the Jamaican Maroons in 1977-8,1 encountered a number of complex linguistic phenomena which were closely tied to the traditional ceremonial sphere in the various communities. -

There were comments on various issues related to the new NARGS website, not all complimentary, and then it turned to the Quarterly online and raised some points about which I would be very pleased to have your views. “The good news is that all the Quarterlies are online and can easily be dowloaded. The older issues are easy to read except for some rather pale type but this may be the result of scanning. There is amazing information in these older issues. The last three years of the Quarterly are also online but you must be a member to read them. These last issues are on Allen Press’s BrightCopy and I find them harder to read than a pdf file. Also the last issue of the Quarterly has 60 extra pages only available online. Personally I find this objectionable as I prefer all my content in a printed bulletin.” This raises two points: Readability of BrightCopy issues versus PDF issues Do you find the BrightCopy issues as good as the PDF issues? Egypt ABSTRACT Growth and flower production of gardenia plant (Gardenia jasminoides, Ellis.) were studied to find out the appropriate growing media amended with sulphur. Rice straw, sawdust and clay used as growing substrates, were amended with four (0, 1/2, 1 and 2% w/w) levels of sulphur. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design using substrates as main plot and sulphur amendment in sub-plot with 4 replications. The experiment was carried out in successive two growing season in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. The findings revealed that both growing media and sulphur amendment alone and in combination significantly affected vegetative and reproductive growth of gardenia plant. Rice straw was the best media followed clay and sawdust. Out of four 1 doses of sulphur amendment, /2% S application showed best result which was identically followed by 1% sulphur in most of the cases. However, considering the interaction effect, rice straw amended with 1% sulphur proved to be the best combination in producing tallest plant(34.69 cm), maximum number of leaves(70), widest stem (4.4 mm), maximum fresh shoot-root weight (37.46 g) and maximum dry shoot-root weight (12.83 g). -

GARDENIA for Me, Nothing Evokes Summer More Than the Fragrance of a Gardenia
Nancy Merwin January 30, 2020 GARDENIA For me, nothing evokes summer more than the fragrance of a gardenia. My love affair with this beautiful, fragrant, classic flower began sixty years ago in my Mother’s well-tended Bay Area garden. She grew several varieties and placed bowls of floating gardenias throughout the house in summer. My favorite variety was ‘Mystery’ as it is the largest, most fragrant gardenia. As I grew older, trips to San Francisco’s Union Square often included a stop at the corner florist stand where a gardenia corsage was purchased and proudly worn. For my birthday my Father always gave me one gardenia for each year, on my 30th birthday he gave me a gardenia plant having decided it was time for me to learn to grow my own. Thus began my endeavor to grow the gardenia. History G. Jasminoides, commonly known as Gardenia is part of the Rubiaceae Family. An evergreen flowering plant known for its shiny dark green leaves, displaying white or yellowish, single or double flower with a strong fragrance. It is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas such as the Pacific Islands, Southern China, and Japan. In the US it grows outdoors in Zones 7-9, 12- 16 and 18-23. In other zones, it can successfully be grown in containers or a greenhouse (H1, H2). The gardenia is native of China, (where it was thought to have been around for a thousand years), Taiwan and Japan. One theory is that it was brought to England in the 1750s and may have been named after jasmine due to its fragrance. -

The Myth Behind Alcohol Happiness Author: Dr. Chencho Dorji Abstract By drawing on the socio-cultural, religious and traditional practices that encourage the use of alcohol in Bhutan, the author will examine the causes and factors that induce and maintain drinking habits among Bhutanese. Next, the impact of heavy drinking on Gross National Happiness will be examined. As an outcome of this study, some relevant strategies to minimize harm related to alcohol in Bhutan will be presented. Author’s background Dr. Chencho Dorji is a consultant psychiatrist and technical advisor to the National Mental Health Programme – Bhutan. He has written several articles on mental health in Bhutan including the article “Achieving Gross National Happiness (GNH) through Community-based Mental Health Services in Bhutan”, which he presented during the first seminar on GNH in Thimphu 2004. Some opt for the long haul, while others prefer a shortcut. A common shortcut is alcohol, known to produce happiness or euphoria, even if momentarily. For this reasons, millions of people worldwide drink it repeatedly everyday. Scientific research has proved that alcohol releases dopamine in the brain, which is responsible for the pleasure sensation. Humankind has used alcohol in one form or another as early as the Stone Age. History is beset with anecdotes of heavy drinking: from Europe to Asia, the Americas to Africa, alcohol has played a significant role in shaping history, politics and religion.
