However, the building has much earlier origins as it was one of three working mills mentioned in village records dated 1086. Acquired by Merton College in the late 13th century the mill eventually passed into private ownership. Around 1950 it was bought as a week-end retreat by William D Clark a distinguished writer, diplomat and former press secretary to the Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden. Under his ownership a comprehensive programme of refurbishment was embarked on in which the working elements of the mill, including the granary and water wheel, were incorporated into the accommodation. Further works were undertaken to the house under the instruction of David Harvey, William Clark’s lifelong friend and companion and it OUTSIDE is this arrangement of rooms that exists today. INTRODUCTION This study of Thomley (S P 631090) covers the period 1086-1349, with emphasis on the 13th and early 14th centuries. ILs main purpose is to explain the eventual desertion of the settlement through an examination of land-tenure and local society. While there are indications that smallholders, even those with half a yardland or less, were not badly off, it is equally clear that the village was declining in this period: between 1279 and 1377 the recorded population dropped by at least a third. Thomley's final extinction lay in the 16th-century enclosures, but its decay can probably be traced back to earlier circumstances: its marginal position between two larger villages, the lack of any focus such as a church or market, and a tendency for holdings to pass into the hands of outside proprietors.
