Copyright by Reginald P. Stepney 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the theological correlation between the role of the church, the identity and role of the African American male, and the effectiveness of fatherhood. The study begins with an in-depth analysis of how absentee fathers cause a crisis in the family. The absence of fathers from the home causes children to suffer financially, socially and psychologically, and therefore causes a disruption in the community as a whole. Focus on the Family founder and leader, Dr. James Dobson, confirms that “our very survival as a people will depend upon the presence or absence of masculine leadership in millions of homes.” In person interviews of African American Christian males and interpretation of the scriptures are just two of the methods used in this study to explore the theological norm of fatherhood. Collectively, the case studies and statistical data within this study explore attempts to remedy the crisis through governmental policies and networking within the community. The final chapter examines the role of urban churches and clergy in teaching effective fatherhood practices. Within the conclusion, it is made clear that the church is responsible for establishing the theological framework and principles for understanding the intended role of being a father. Another conclusion of this study is the acknowledgement of the African American community’s role in shaping and reforming the identity and role of the African American male as a father in the home. The African American community and the church must continue working in tandem to encourage organic social networks that will promote a model for effective fatherhood practices.

  • Op-Ed: NHSA Healthy Start Fathers – Real Life, Real Dads
Op-Ed: NHSA Healthy Start Fathers – Real Life, Real Dads Written By: Kenn Harris, National Healthy Start Association, Dads Matter Initiative Armin Brott, Mr. Dad We all know (or at least we should know) how important fathers are in their children’s lives. Children with involved fathers get better grades and are more likely to graduate high school. They’re less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol or to get involved in criminal activity. They’re more independent, manage their emotions better, are less violent, and have higher levels of empathy than kids whose dads aren’t involved. Boys with involved dads learn how to treat the women in their lives, and girls with involved dads learn what they should expect from the men in their lives. But none of this happens if Dad isn’t around—a scenario that’s especially common in low- income communities where families tend to be younger, unmarried, less educated, and resource deprived. Most of the services available to these families (prenatal care, new parent classes, and so on) are actually targeted at mothers and for the most part, completely exclude fathers. Dads get the message that they have no role in their children’s lives. Too many take that message to heart and simply back away. The National Healthy Start Association (NHSA) is committed to changing that dynamic and to giving men the tools and support they need to become the fathers they truly want to be—and their children need them to be. We know from our research that men don’t access services in the same way as women do, and that men and fathers experience great challenges in navigating systems that weren’t designed for them, systems, which traditionally have ignored them.

As an adolescent, like many young men in our inner cities, I encountered various problems which led me to join 9 three gangsta (Blood) set and I have been a member for quite some time. Prior to joining, I have always been disciplined and militant, realizing at an early age that I was a member of that hated group - The Black Man. As evolution engulfed my being, I realized that I walked with another “Set of Foot Prints” and began to walk the positive path in my life. My community services include student workshops on conflict resolution, gang prevention/intervention, and an active participant of the Political Action Committee (P.A.C.) based in Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Drew E. Altman Drew Altman is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation. It develops and runs its own research and communication programs, often in partnership with outside organizations. The Foundation is not associated with Kaiser Permanente or Kaiser Industries. • Of Rods and Spoiled Children
Of Rods and Spoiled Children - Basil Herring. Fatherhood, Israel, and Torah come together in a marvelous way in a brief passage of the parsha: And you shall know in your heart, that just as a father disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you, that you observe His commandments, go in His ways, and fear Him. For the Lord your God brings you to a good land, a land flowing with water in the valley and in the mountain. Deuteronomy 8:5-7 On this Shabbas morning I will talk of several subjects close to my heart: fatherhood, Israel, and Torah. For, you see, they come together in a marvelous way in a brief passage of the parshah, and it is this: And you shall know in your heart, that just as a father disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you, that you observe His commandments, go in His ways, and fear Him. For the Lord your God brings you to a good land, a land flowing with water in the valley and in the mountain. Deuteronomy 8:5-7 There are two texts that I would like to adduce, to help us understand these verses. The first, you might say, is from a rather unlikely source, a best-seller by a black comedian, entitled Fatherhood, by Bill Cosby. It reads as follows: “Nothing is harder for a parent than getting your kids to do the right thing. There is such a rich variety of ways for you to fail: by using threats, by using bribery, by using reason, by using example, by using blackmail, or by pleading for mercy...
