Let’s remember that for more than a thousand years, the Propers were sung in Latin exclusively by the professional scholas. Regrettably, immediately after the Vatican II Council there were no suitable translations nor were there any congregational musical settings of the Propers. As a result, congregational hymns were introduced. These hymns were meant to replace the Propers until translations and musical settings were available. Eventually, the Propers were forgotten and the hymns have replaced the Propers permanently. Contact Patty DiCostanzo at Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation into the life of the Church (Baptism and the [email protected]. Eucharist are the other two). As the word “confirmation” comes from the Latin “confirmare” meaning “to strengthen”, so the Sacrament of Confirmation is seen as a “strengthening” of the grace of the Holy Spirit HOLY FAMILY PRAYER GROUP received in Baptism. As we have seen, each of the seven sacraments has two parts: the matter (the material of the sacrament), and the form (the words used).

For Baptism, for example, the matter is the water while the form is the words “N. I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Similarly, for the Sacrament of the Eucharist the matter is bread and wine and the form is the words of institution, “Take this, all of you, and eat it....”

The matter of the sacrament of Confirmation is the anointing with chrism on the forehead, which is done by the laying on of the hand. (Chrism is oil consecrated by the Bishop during the Chrism Mass on Holy All Saints Catholic School will be accepting Thursday, also used for anointing the hands of priests at their ordination).
