Family Worship Services For Advent and Christmas Day FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT Leader: O come, O come, Immanuel. Come, dwell with us. Family: Show us your way. Make your home with us. Save us from our sins and wrong. Leader: For long years, prophets and psalmists prayed in faith. They awaited the day when the Savior would dwell among His people. Finally, the days were accomplished. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son to show us the way and save all people from their sins.” (Light the first candle on the Advent wreath) Family: We light the Prophecy candle as we prepare to receive our King. Let us recall the prophet’s faithful promises: Scripture: Isaiah 9:2, 6 O come, O come, Immanuel, and ransom captive Israel That mourns in lowly exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! O come, desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind: Bid envy, strife, and discord cease: Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! Prayer: Dear God, prepare our hearts for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday. Rid us of selfish wants and unfair judgments. Fill us with your love and peace. Amen. SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT Leader: “No room! No room here!” Family: “No room for Jesus?” Leader: Where is there room for the babe of Bethlehem, the Lord of love? Truly, the tragedy of the first Christmas, when the holy family could find no room and went to a stable, is as real today as it was in Bethlehem. Can we find room, room for Jesus? When the needy, the friendless, the forgotten ones knock at the doors of our homes or pass by our windows, what will our answer be? (Light two candles on the Advent wreath) Family: We light again the Prophecy candle in expectation of our Lord, and today we light a second candle, the Bethlehem candle, as we prepare room for Him. Scripture: Luke 2:1-7 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore Him; O come, let us adore Him; O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord. Prayer: Let not our hearts be busy inns that have no room for Thee, but candles for the Living Christ and His Nativity. Response: O come to our home, Lord Jesus; there is room in our home for You. THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT Leader: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…” Family: “…that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Leader: The promise of God’s great gift was to everyone, regardless of race or nation. The angels sang, “Good news of great joy, which will come to all the people…on earth, peace among men with whom he is pleased.” How long it has taken the people of the world to discover that God’s gift was for whoever would accept it! Each race and nation has discovered that Jesus belongs to all! And so our Christmas is enriched because all the world comes to the manger singing songs of joy. Let us come to Christmas together, then. Let us sing each other’s songs of joy, uniting our voices in a single prayer for Christ’s peace and love for all. (Light three candles on the Advent wreath) Family: Again we light the Prophecy candle, recalling the promises of old; the Bethlehem candle, as we continually prepare our hearts for the greatest gift; and today, the Shepherd’s candle, as we remember the messengers who shared the story of Christ’s birth. Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o’er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing, yonder shines the infant Light; Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King. Sages, leave your contemplations; brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great desire of nations; ye have seen His natal star; Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King. Prayer: We thank You, our God, for Your gift of Jesus to the whole world. We thank you that His love and compassion for all peoples bring joy and hope for each person in every nation. Help us to feel lovingly toward the people of every land. Encourage us to do our part to fill the world with Your good will and peace. Help each of us to be a messenger of Your love. Amen. FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT Leader: “What child is this who laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping?” Family: “This, this is Christ the King!” Scripture: John 3:16, 17 Leader: Christ came to us out of abundant love, giving His all for humankind. Let us therefore review in our own minds the true meaning of Christmas. Christ came to us in history, and left us His spirit and a promise to return and claim those who would follow Him. (Light four candles on the Advent wreath) Family: Let us now light the candles on this Fourth Sunday in Advent as we approach the coming of our Lord: the first, to symbolize the period of awaiting the Messiah’s birth; the second, to symbolize the preparation we must make in our homes and in our hearts; the third, the sharing of Christ with all the world; and today, the fourth, known as the Angels’ candle, symbolic of Christ’s love and final coming. Hark, the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth, and mercy mild. God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; With th’ angelic host proclaim, ”Christ is born in Bethlehem!” Hark, the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!” Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, risen with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth. Born to give them second birth. Hark, the herald angels sing. “Glory to the newborn King!” Prayer: O God, be born anew in our hearts this Christmastide. Help us remember Jesus for whom “there was no room.” May there be no people in our town who cannot see the Christmas star or hear the angels sing because their hearts are left dark through our neglect. Amen. Response: “Come, Lord Jesus.” CHRISTMAS DAY Leader: Prepare us now for Christmas. Family: And give us your peace. (Light all candles on the Advent wreath) Family: We light these candles in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Joy to the world, the Lord is come; let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing. He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love. Scripture: I John 4:7-16 Leader: As we review again the wonder of Christ’s birth, let us review in our own hearts the true meaning of Christmas and let us covenant to abide in this truth always. Family: Reveal to us your truth and fill us with joy and peace in believing. O Holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Immanuel. Prayer: Dear God, enter now into our hearts on this Christmas Day and remain with us forever. Help us to share Your presence with all people everywhere. Grant to us your peace and help us to proclaim “Peace on earth, good will toward all.” Amen. December 2013 .
