Environmental measures in the Gangavaram Port

The GPLis all weather deep water port. The port is most environmental friendly port with state of the art cargo handling equipment with 5 berths out of two berths are completely mechanized and our principle cargos (Coal & Iron Ore) is being handling up to 70% through mechanized handling system and the state of our mechanical dust suppression system is provided at various critical points such as equipment (Hopper & Declaimer), hooded conveyor belts and the storage yards have been functioning well throughout the system. Due to this we are able to mitigate all the dust that generated during the operations. The other berths are being used for the other cargos such as Project cargo, fertilizer (Urea), Sugaretc.

To control the dust pollution, as a part of project, State of Art water sprinkling system with a cost of more than Rs 20 crs is established at various places. GPL is spending around Rs 20 lakhs per month towards water, power charges and maintenance for DSS.Around 15 people are working daily for operating the DSS.

GPL has established state of art model modern mechanical conveyor system for handling coal & Iron ore. GPLhas provided closed enclosures for the entire conveyor system to curb dust of coal/iron ore particles in to the air.

The dust suppression system comprises of water pumps driven by electrical motors for pumping water all over the place. This water will be sprayed by water cannons at pressure of about 6-10kg/cm2 from various points to suppress the dust formed. GPLis having total 80 cannons.

As per the functional description of the proposed dust suppression system, the water will be maintained under pressure of 6 to 10 Kg/cm2 in the pipelines by Group-l Main Water Suppression Pumps. For sprinkling water through the sprinklers, individual Pumps at the Transfer towers are used to pump water through sprinklers from Water Tanks at Transfer towers.

Water sprinkling is being carried out on the general cargo berth and in other areas viz. Roadsand yards through water tankers to arrest the dust and control the dust pollution due to the vehicular movement in the port. GPLis spending around RS15 lakhs per month towards water charges and maintenance. Around 10 persons are working for this activity. GPLcreated a wind breaking wall with a cost of Rs30 lakhs near boundary of Gangavaram village and Wind screen created with cost of 6.5 Lakhs at Truck parking location towards HB colony to arrest any dust trickling in to the village as recommended by the pollution control board.

Two dedicated sweeping machines are using for the cleaning of berths, back up areas and roads. ·.

Environmental Monitoring Programme in GPL

As per the statutory regulations GPL appointed a 3rd party agency, which was approved by government agencies to continuously monitor the environmental parameters as port as well as Gangavaram village and PedaGantyada areas.

Ambient Air Quality

Ambient Air Quality is being monitoring at three locations. The results are being submitted to the APPCB on monthly basis. The results are within the statutory limits. Hourly base data up loaded in APPCBlink.

1. Cargo handling area (assource) 2. Gangavaram 3. Pedda Gantyada (behind vimala vidyalaya)

Noise Monitoring

Noise monitoring is being carried out fortnightly as per the statutory regulations for the four locations and the results are well within the statutory limits and the same are being submitted to the APPCBon monthly basis.

1. Cargo handling area (assource) 2. Gangavaram 3. PedaGantyada/Security Gate 4. HBcolony

Ground water quality monitoring

Ground water quality monitoring is being carried out on monthly basis as per the statutory regulations for the Gangavaramand Port premises locations and results are within the statutory limits and the same are being submitted to the APPCBon monthly basis.

1. Gangavaram 2. Dibbapalem

Marine water Isediment monitoring

The marine water and sediment quality monitoring is being carried out fortnightly basisof tidal sampling for the Four locations as

1. Basine 2. Port entrance channel 3. South break wall outside 4. North break wall outside .. ~ . "•• \ ,

Physical, chemical and biological parameters were analyzed for water as well as for sediment to assess the quality and the same is being submitted to the APPCB.The results are indicating that the waters are not having any noticeable contamination

Details of Green belt in Gangavaram Port

A nursery with 80,000 saplings is established in the Gangavaram Port Ltd, with a variety of avenue and ornamental saplingswhich suits the soil condition of Gangavaram Port Ltd.

The GPl has planted 19,250 plants out of 38,500 under Green Visakha programme, and planted 19,250 plants under GPl Green belt development programme. "
