Its inevitable yet unknowable nature has intrigued and compelled people across time and place. A confrontation with death—be it the loss of a loved one or our own mortality—is a certainty that awaits us all. The presence of death has recently, again, connected people worldwide in new ways, as we face the growing global death toll caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being the “great common denominator,” death can be hard to pin down. While the feelings and actions evoked by death vastly vary, being shaped by intersectional factors ranging from the intimate to the structural, death, nonetheless, induces feeling and action. While death can be destructive, its impact can also clearly be seen in the ways it has motivated the constructive. Death creates and re/shapes meanings, relationships, spaces, and practices. The articles in this special issue have evolved out of presentations at the February 2020 “Histories of Death” International Symposium held at the University of Turku. The idea for this publication, much like for the symposium, was to see what types of connections, overlaps, and disparities may arise when historical studies of death across places and centuries are considered together. Rather than framing this collection as a work of comparative history, we see this as the forging of a connective history. Following the conceptualization of Marianne Hirsch, this issue takes “different starting and WWW.THANATOS-JOURNAL.COM ISSN 2242-6280 3(161) THANATOS vol. 9 2/2020 © Suomalaisen Kuolemantutkimuksen Seura reference points” but “aims to think divergent histories alongside and in connection with each other” (Hirsch 2012, 21). The potential of such an approach is great, as “connective reading…moves between global and intimate concerns by attending precisely to the intimate details, the connective tissues and membranes, that animate each case even while enabling the discovery of shared motivations and tropes” (Hirsch 2012, 206). By bringing together these articles, we aim to make connections between some of the many feelings, places, and experiences that intersect death. In recent years, we have seen an exciting expansion of death and grief focussed dialogue, publication, and programming that has connected academic death studies, death care professionals, and the public in new, meaningful ways. These articles and the preceding “Histories of Death” symposium, as part of Samira Saramo’s Academy of Finland funded postdoctoral project “Death and Mourning in ‘Finnish North America’,” are a response and offering to these developments, to consider more fully the historical trajectories that have led us to this point. At the symposium, each panel was concluded with a paper that brought the theme to the present day. Such an approach successfully facilitated discussion about change and continuity, and made connections between participants’ historical research and lived experiences. This special issue, likewise, offers such bridges to readers. Our understandings of death come with long and complex histories, shaped by culture, place, time, power, and identities. By explicitly connecting the study of histories of death with the rich, interdisciplinary field of death studies, we further our understanding of how meanings of the “good death” are continuously constructed, negotiated, and contested, and the ways intersectional social factors—class, migrant background, religion, sexuality, gender, and even non/humanness, among others—shape access to mourning and “dying well.” By bringing together research with rather different starting points, the articles collectively encourage us to see the connective histories of death. The following explorations and analyses reveal varied and interwoven traditions, ideologies, and institutions that have shaped our experiences. They initiate a dialogue about the different ways people have approached dying, death, and mourning from personal,

While he lay in state in a satin-lined casket the size of a shoe box, admirers left offerings and toys at his home “until the front yard looked like the premises of a coun- try clergyman on Donation Day.” Then, accompanied by a sizeable entourage, his mistress brought him to Hartsdale Pet Cemetery and “laid him to rest in a flower trimmed grave.” At that time we had just over one undredh burials, with many plots marked only by field rocks, wooden planks or simple plantings, but Babe’s monument changed all this. Crafted from flawles s marble, the little dog’s likeness was a catalyst for other exquisite tributes in stone, u ltimately leading to the transformation of the rustic hillside into a n acclaimed garden of beauty and grace. Few studies with a limited focus in terms of impacts and life cycle stages exist that assess the environmental impacts of dogs. This paper addresses the entire life cycle of a dog. An LCA study on an average dog was conducted considering the pet food and dog excrements, i.e., urine and feces. Fifteen impact categories were analyzed. An average dog has a climate change and freshwater eutrophication potential of around 8200 kg CO2eq and 5.0 kg Peq., respectively. The main contribution to most impact categories over the dog’s life is caused by pet food. Freshwater eutrophication is mainly determined by the dog´s urine and feces. Feces also have a significant contribution to the category of freshwater ecotoxicity. Impacts increase significantly with increasing weight and a longer lifetime of the dog as well as low collection rates of the feces. This LCA study reveals that pet dogs can have a significant environmental impact, e.g., around 7% of the annual climate change impact of an average EU citizen.

    Djurkyrkogården (The Pet Cemetery) Anna Kleberg at Andréhn-Schiptjenko January 9 – February 16, 2014 The pet cemetery Djurkyrkogården lies hidden on the island Djurgården in Stockholm. There are around 2000 graves for pets; dogs, cats, turtles and horses and new graves are continually added. The oldest is believed to belong to the author August Blanche’s dog Nero, buried in mid 19th century. With the pet cemetery as a starting point, and with support in the Attachment Theory, (developed by among others Bowlby and Ainsworth in the middle of the 20th century), Kleberg has made a new film in which she investigates questions concerning how attachment affects us in our close relationships and by the loss or lack of them and all that they incorporate; closeness, security and care. The film is built around conversations with people who have experienced a close human-animal relationship. "I started thinking about things such as the relationship with a pet; the contact, and what happens with the relationship when the pet dies and so forth. Many of us probably have more physical contact with the computer's keyboard today. How does that affect us?" The new film will be premiered in the exhibition, Kleberg's fourth at the gallery, and will be shown with a group of photographs also taken at Djurkyrkogården. The new work refers to Anna's long-term interest in the act of seeing and how our perception of reality and our experience of our surroundings are dependent on our psychological, ideological and cultural baggage. In the film Djurkyrkogården, Kleberg dwells on the borderline between the staged and the documentary.

    California Association of Public Cemeteries Position Statement for Pet Cemeteries The framework of this position statement is from direct conversations that Pubic Cemetery officials and staff have had with families wishing to bury their pets in the same community cemetery as is used by the caregiver of the pet. The lifestyles of families today may include a pet that will have an intimate bond that carries a devotion that is very meaningful to the family. This devotion is sustained through the life of the pet that ultimately may have a shorter lifespan than the caregiver. The death of the pet may be traumatic and difficult and Public Cemetery Districts are working to give relief to these families. Current Authorization Currently the California Health and Safety Code §9001 restricts Public Cemetery Districts to bury human remains only. This burial can only be done via traditional casketed burial in ground or by cremation in ground or above ground. Current Limitations The constraint of only burial of human remains has left many families dissatisfied by not being able to bury pets for which they are caregivers. The bond between families and their animal companions is very strong and we are not meeting the needs of our public by not accommodating their need to bury their animal companions. Need for Pet Burial People grieve for their companions whether they are human or animal. If allowed to create a pet cemetery Public Cemetery Districts would be able to help families work through the grieving process as well as give them a lasting place to visit as they memorialize their companions.

Animal Burials and Animal Cemeteries in Post-Socialist Estonia Marju Kõivupuu Centre of Culture and Landsape, the School of Humanities, Tallinn University [email protected] Ritual burials for animals have been practiced both ancient advanced cultures (like Egypt) and prehistoric peoples. As a factor accom- panying the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 19th century, cemeteries for pets began to appear in the vicinity of bigger cities, and pet culture as a whole formed a separate economic branch. In industrial society the topic of pets became so important that in 1978 Errol Morris produced his widely acclaimed documentary Gates of Heaven, which focused on the business of animal burials. This article reviews the change in animal burial practices, focusing on the practices found in post-socialist Estonia, where the phenom- enon is rather new because of various socio-cultural reasons. As a result of this newness, the phenomenon is causing opposing opinions in society. Key words: Death culture; anthropomorphism; pet culture; pet cemeteries; popular religion. Introduction The best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of her master. – Anonymous Animals have their own culture, history and ethnology, and animals have been an important part of human culture for thousands of years (Premack & Premack 2002: 350–351). Animal history and culture as a subject of study in ethnology (i.e. the relationship of people and animals through the ages, values, qualities and meanings ascribed to animals) are human-mediated and constructed. Every generation has had its own point of view of animals as crea- tures who do not have all that we have as humans, such as language, consciousness, intellect and morality.

    Digging Prehistoric burials add to our understanding of the long, long relationship between people and dogs. By Jane Brackman, PhD Up Bones Studies of prehistoric dog burials have been making splashy headlines lately.i Although the popular press would have us believe that these finds are proof of the affectionate relationship our ancestors had with dogs, the unifying theory that gives meaning to burial patterns remains elusive because ancient people left no written record. What little we know about dogs’ social roles in antiquity is a patchy mosaic of information derived from physical analysis of bones excavated from gravesites. The accuracy of this mosaic has been further complicated by archaeologists’ long-standing difficulty with reliably distinguishing between wolves and dogs, not only because the two animals look similar, but also because changes in morphology during the early stages of domestication were subtle. However, in 1986, zooarchaeologist Darcy Morey, now adjunct professor in anthropological sciences at Virginia’s Radford University, developed a statisti- cal equation to more accurately identify dissimilarities between skulls. A decade later, geneticists were able to extricate even more conclusive information from DNA. Then, in a landmark paper published in 1999 in the Journal of Heredity, geneticists Carles Vilà, Jesus Maldonado and Robert Wayne suggested that the first domestication event occurred more than 100,000 years earlier than dog burial remains suggested. This marked the beginning of a decades-long trend that all but excluded archaeology and other academic disciplines from the equation. Morey—and later, Greger Larson, evolutionary biologist in Durham University’s Department of Archaeology in the UK—challenged the exclusive use of DNA analysis to identify the time and place of the first domestication event.
