Agricultural University, A study was undertaken to assess the status of available major nutrients in soils of Banaskantha district of Sardarkrushinagar, Gujarat, Gujarat. About Forty representative surface (0-15 cm) soil samples were collected from farmer’s field of India each taluka. Soils of Banaskantha district are moderately alkaline in reaction (pH2.5 7.84) with low soluble salt content JS Chaure (EC 0.35 dS/m).The organic carbon status of soils of Banaskantha district was low (0.30 %). Materials and Methods To assess the available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in soils of Banaskantha district, total 556 representative surface soil samples were collected from farmer’s fields of each taluka of Banaskantha district during 2016. One representative surface sample was collected from field upto a depth of 0 to 15 cm by zig-zag method. About forty soil samples were collected from 14 talukas of Banaskantha district during April-2016. The soil samples were air dried in shade. The soil samples, after air drying were ground with wooden mortar and pestle and Correspondence passed through 2.0 mm sieve. Desertification is the continuous degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub- humid regions. Mapping and quantifying the extent and geographical distribution of degraded lands form an essential input for planning reclamation/ conservation strategies. In Banaskantha district of Gujarat, drought is a common feature causing soil moisture deficiency leading to desertification. The present study deals with mapping and assessment of land degradation and desertification status of Banaskantha district, covering 10,743 sq. km area, located in semi-arid regions of Gujarat state using remotely sensed data. Desertification in the district is assessed using visual interpretation of three season (kharif, rabi and zaid) IRS LISS III satellite data of 2011-12 timeframe in GIS environment. Desertification Status Map is prepared at 1:50,000 scale using hierarchal classification system comprising of three elements viz. land use, process of desertification and its severity.

For this purpose 32 years weather and crop yield records of Banaskantha district were collected. It was found that the 26 week crop period model ( using original weather variables, week wise approach) was recommended for pre harvest forecast due to higher R2 value and lower simulated forecast error. Three villages were selected from each taluka and from each Gujarat, India village 10 respondents who reared buffalo either alone or mixed with cattle were selected by using a DV Parmar multistage random sampling technique. The analysis revealed that 34 % farmers keep their buffaloes in College of Veterinary Science and the shed under tree and in a loose house. Majority of buffalo shelter (63.20%) constructed in the north- Animal Husbandry, Sardarkrushinagar south orientation. Majority (83.33%) of the respondents tied their buffaloes during the whole day and Dantiwada Agricultural University, Gujarat, India night time. Maximum (53.33%) respondents kept dairy buffaloes with their own dwelling. Majority of the respondents used iron sheets and thatched material as a roof (66.98% and 17.93%) & supported by KJ Ankuya iron poles (64.15%) and more than half a (58.50%) of them had single sloped roof.
