Innovation in the Online Creation and Debating of Fan-Made Comic Book Battles
Innovation in the Online Creation and Debating of Fan-made Comic Book Battles Chris Wildrick Associate Professor, School of Art, Syracuse University SLSA 2016 Comic Vine is the largest comic wiki in the world, with hundreds of thousands of pages. It also includes battle and discussion forums, fan fiction and fan art, fan reviews, online role-playing games, news, and other features. My Geek Cred! Comic Vine participant • Top wiki-writer (usually ranked between #45 and 50 out of 200,000+ members) • Nominee for debater Hall of Fame • Created 350+ battles, with many tens of thousands of views • 35-time featured debater for the Battle of the Week Part-time worker at Cloud City Comics and Toys • Organize their back-issue comics for the last few years Cosplayer • Currently teaching a class on cosplay The forums (and performative fandom in general) are a form of dialog-based community building, and create a mindfulness of communication Performative fandom is worthy of attention as an artform, just like the original artforms that spawned the fandom in the first place Today we will focus on the particular example of online comic battle forums, specifically on Comic Vine Recent bales on the Bale Forum Comic battle debating Good debaters have in-depth knowledge of the characters and the ability to recall the knowledge on demand, but also logic, strategy, and good writing skills. Participants regularly discuss and rate each other’s debating styles and rhetoric. Good debaters are also expected to use scans appropriately and have good formatting. Battle debating requires close reading of images and text for content and context—art history skills in practice! CaVs (one-on-one battles) and tournament wins and losses are based directly on voters’ perceptions of these attributes in the debaters. -

KENT FARM - NIGHT We pan over the Kent Farm, closing in on a barn. A soft BLUE GLOW emanates from within. INT. KENT BARN - NIGHT Inside the barn, underneath the FLOORBOARDS, the glow FLASHES BRIGHTLY. A ROBOTIC VOICE is heard speaking in an unknown language. FLASHBACK INT. KRYPTON - JOR-EL'S LAB - NIGHT KAL-EL'S POV BABY KAL-EL sits in a makeshift ROCKET, somewhat crude, but sturdy. JOR-EL is talking to Kal-El, but we cannot understand him. He is speaking in Kryptonian. The building shakes, CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES collapse around. Jor-El walks away from us, holding his wife's hand as they move to a CONTROL PANEL. Behind Jor-El, a ROBOT with blue eyes, standing as tall as a man, enters the launching bay of Jor-El's lab. A robotic voice speaks. Baby Kal-El reaches out for the robot as it walks close to Jor-El's rocket. It transforms into a SMALL SIZED ROCKET with a BLUE EGG-SHAPED NOSE CONE. EXT. OUTER SPACE The rocket ship fires away from Krypton as it EXPLODES into shards of DUST and CRYSTAL. INT. ROCKET SHIP Kal-El sleeps as the rocket increases to hyper speed. Within the craft, a soft BLUE LIGHT grows brighter, illuminating Kal-el. -

Camping Equipment Motorcycle [200] Classic Weapon - Scimitar [50], Bow [0] Drawbacks: Bloodless Violence [100] I woke up with the taste of sand in my mouth and the feeling of a hot sun bearing down on my skin. The blistering heat felt like an extra ten pounds of weight pressing down on every cell in my body, and I found myself scrambling for some kind of water. Mercifully, I found a backpack and a full canteen on my person. Problem is, I don't remember getting these. Or a motorcycle, for that matter. I checked my phone. No reception, and the battery is nearly dead. The time read 7:03 PM. The sun was bearing down on me from directly above. To say I was panicking would be an understatement...but I had enough sense to know that screaming into the abyss while in the desert on high noon is probably a bad idea. I wonder if this motorcycle is all-terrain? Never rode one before. Okay, I can safely say it is not all-terrain and I am very bad at driving motorcycles. It's like riding an angry bicycle with serious childhood trauma. Still, it's slightly faster than walking so I try to roll along with it. -

X-Men, Dragon Age, and Religion: Representations of Religion and the Religious in Comic Books, Video Games, and Their Related Media An Honors Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in International Studies. By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games. -
American Animated Action Teams and the Token Female
THE MODELS OF EMPOWERED FEMININITY WE OFFER YOUNG BOYS: AMERICAN ANIMATED ACTION TEAMS AND THE TOKEN FEMALE Matthew Diebler A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown, Advisor The very nature of a hero is to stand as a cultural ideal. The heroes we produce for our children are meant to function as their idealized cultural models, teaching them the positive value of specific embodied traits. This extends to gender: the gendered ideological statements made by these heroic characters promote a gendered cultural ideal. Traditionally, academics interested in female gender representation and children’s television have focused on shows targeting young girls. However, it is just as important to examine the representation of the heroic women in television shows aimed at young boys. Young boys grow into adult men and, in our patriarchal society, male expectations of women play largely into their expectations of themselves. Therefore, the heroines of series marketed at young boys represent the ideal cultural models of empowered femininity, influencing the expectations and criteria these boys will have for “strong” women as they grow into politically powerful men. With all this in mind, it then becomes important to examine these models of ideal empowered femininity. By examining the token females in American animated action/adventure team-based television series marketed toward young boys over the past 30 years (starting with Super Friends in the late 70s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, and G.I. -

The Supermen of the Justice League and X-Men: Comic Book
THE SUPERMEN OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE AND X-MEN: COMIC BOOK REPRESENTATIONS OF MASCULINITY FOR TODAY’S AUDIENCE by TREVOR MATTHEW LANIER (Under the direction of Leara Rhodes) ABSTRACT Media representations of masculinity have become increasingly popular in recent academic analysis, but few have considered the medium of comic books. Through the lens of hegemonic masculinity, this project seeks to fill that void using a comparative textual analysis of two of the most popular comic book franchises today, Justice League and Uncanny X-Men. Additionally, it considers how those portrayals have changed through the implementation of relaunches by both of the producing companies, Marvel and DC Comics, through an analysis of the series preceding the current series. Findings suggest the Justice League franchise has remained mostly hegemonic in its representation of men in regards to demographic traits but more non-hegemonic in behaviors. On the other hand, the Uncanny X-Men franchise has transitioned from more hegemonic male characters to more non-hegemonic male characterizations with a variety of demographic and behavioral traits. Opportunities for further research are also discussed.
