A curbside crack in this study was defined as a linear space (under 20 mm in width) between the asphalt pavement and curbstone. The species composition of plants invading curbside cracks was surveyed in 38 plots along the serial National Route, over a total length of 36.5 km, in Fukuoka City in southern Japan. In total, 113 species including native plants (83 species, 73.5%), perennial herbs (57 species, 50.4%) and woody plants (13 species, 11.5%) were recorded in curbside cracks. Buried seeds were also obtained from soil in curbside cracks, which means the cracks would possess a potential as seed bank. Incidentally, no significant differences were found in the vegetation characteristics of curbside cracks among land-use types (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, P > 0.05). From these results, curbside cracks would be likely to play an important role in offering habitat for plants in urban area.

Indigo: Sources, processes and possibilities for bioregional blue Nicholas Wenner and Matthew Forkin November 2017 Photo by Kalie Cassel-Feiss by Kalie Photo Table of Contents Introduction . .3 Indigo . .4 The Indigo Process . 11 Conclusions . 15 Photo by Paige Green Green by Paige Photo Indigo Overview 2 Introduction his report was completed with funding generously provided by the Jena and Michael King TFoundation as part of Fibershed’s True Blue project . It is one project of many that support Fibershed’s larger mission: “Fibershed develops regional and regenerative fiber systems on behalf of independent working producers, by expanding opportunities to implement carbon farming, forming catalytic foundations to rebuild regional manufacturing, and through connecting end-users to farms and ranches through public education.” In this report we present the various sources of blue dye and of indigo, and motivate the use of plant-based indigo in particular . We also identify the limitations of natural dyes like indigo and the need for larger cultural and systemic shifts . The ideal indigo dye production system would be a closed-loop system that moves from soil to dye to textiles and back to soil . The indigo process has three basic steps: planting, harvesting, and dye extraction . In this document, we provide an overview of each, and detailed explorations are given in two separate documents that will be available through Fibershed by the end of 2017 . This report is based on a literature review of academic research, natural dye books, online content, and personal interviews . It benefited greatly from conversations with (and the generosity of) many skilled artisans and natural dyers, including Rowland Ricketts, Jane Palmer, and Kori Hargreaves .

Naturalista sicil., S. IV, XXXVI (1), 2012, pp. 111 -116 SALVATORE PASTA A NEW CASUAL ALIEN PLANT IN SICILY: PERSICARIA CAPITATA (BUCH.-HAM. EX D.DON) H.GROSS (Polygonaceae ) SUMMARY The ongoing process of naturalization of this central Asiatic knotweed is here presented. More - over, the paper provides basic information of the site where it grows (urban centre of Palermo) and on the plant community it takes part to. The recent diffusion of this xenophyte at global scale sug - gests its potentially invasive behaviour. RIASSUNTO Una nuova pianta avventizia in Sicilia: Persicaria capitata (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Gross (Poly - gonaceae). During my last temporary teaching appointment in a secondary school of Palermo, I noticed a strange creeping knotweed growing at the base of a heap of sand and crushed stones, remnant of an abandoned construction site in the inner playground of the school. The day after, the direct observation of a sample by using the key for Italian Polygonum s.l. published by GALASSO (2009) enabled me to solve the enigma: the “mysterious” plant actually is Per - sicaria capitata (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Gross (Polygonaceae). • Persicaria Perfoliata (Polygonaceae) Reaches North Carolina
Poindexter, D.B. 2010. Persicaria perfoliata (Polygonaceae) reaches North Carolina. Phytoneuron 2010-30: 1–9. PERSICARIA PERFOLIATA (POLYGONACEAE) REACHES NORTH CAROLINA DERICK B. P OINDEXTER I.W. Carpenter, Jr. Herbarium Department of Biology Appalachian State University Boone, NC 28608, USA ABSTRACT Persicaria perfoliata is documented as established for the first time in North Carolina. This taxon is a state-listed Class A noxious weed that has very aggressive naturalizing tendencies. At least three distinct populations have been discovered in north central Alleghany County. Plants in all localities are fruiting rampantly and spreading to adjacent disturbed areas. A key is provided to help differentiate similar congeners in North America and color photos show features of the habitats and plants.
