While existing literature tends to focus on the majority religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, much less attention is given to Jainism, Sikhism, Islam or Christianity. While not neglecting the majority traditions, this valuable resource also explores the important role which the minority traditions play in the religious life of the subcontinent, covering popular as well as elite expressions of religious faith. By examining the realities of religious life, and the ways in which the traditions are practiced on the ground, this book provides an illuminating introduction to Asian religions. Karen Pechilis is NEH Distinguished Professor of Humanities and Chair and Professor of Religion at Drew University, USA. Her books for Routledge include Interpreting Devotion: The Poetry and Legacy of a Female Bhakti Saint of India (2011). Selva J. Raj (1952–2008) was Chair and Stanley S. Kresge Professor of Religious Studies at Albion College, USA. He served as chair of the Conference on the Study of Religions of India and co-edited several books on South Asia. Gospel and Culture: Some Indian Reflections KP. ALEAZ* In this paper we present some of the findings of a commissioned study of the World Council of Churches on Gospel and Culture which we had the privilege to undertake. The Study is an elucidation of a double gospel emerging out of the Indian culture: on the one hand we have the. gospel of inter-religious interaction and the consequent composite culture of India and on the other, there is the gospel of God in Jesus arising out of the Indian hermeneutical context, which only mutually ratify one another. Culture denotes all the capabilities and habits acquired by human person as a member of a particular society, such as knowledge, belief, art, law, customs ek It is the whole way of life, material, intellectual and spiritual. It describes the way human beings think, feel, believe ·and behave. Culture is a comprehensive term and includes the following: (i) patterns and modes of external behaviour; (ii) the productive level of agriculture, industry, services and information, (iii) the social level of political economy or power ,. relations among human beings; and (iv) basic postures, values, beliefs, world views, which form the foundations of a culture and which find expression in art, music, literature, philosophy and religion. 1. The Research Problem . Historically, India has been one of the greatest confluences of different cultural strands. The composite culture of India is a product of borrowing, sharing and fusing through processes of interaction between two or more streams and such cultural symbiosis has given birth to greater vitality and larger acceptability. -

Executive Summary Ranchi University came into existence on the 12th of July, 1960 as a teaching- cum-affiliating University with headquarters at Ranchi. At the time of inception Ranchi University covered whole of present day Jharkhand, except Santhal Parganas. In 1992, Ranchi University was bifurcated to create Vinoba Bhave Ranchi University, reducing its area by nearly half. In 2009 Ranchi University was divided twice – in January to create Nilambar Pitambar University, at Medininagar, and in August 2009 to create Kolhan University, at Chaibasa. At present, Ranchi University spans five districts of Jharkhand, namely, Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega and Lohardaga. The University today has 15 Constituent Colleges, and 55 affiliated colleges/ institutes. All rights reserved De-Constructing the term “Tribe/Tribal” in India: A Post-Colonial Reading Pratap Digal Professor, Theology Department, Serampore College, Hooghly-712201, West Bengal, INDIA Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The British colonial administrator-ethnographers in India were pioneers who surveyed and carried out expeditions on tribes but often their methods were doubtful. Their survey reports and papers became the source of precious information about such province and at the same time a tool for their continuous development of colonial administration. However by using official machinery and tour for collecting data they bypassed the ethical consideration of research. Their writings in many ways ended up contorting tribes as being synonymous with being backward, uncivilized and barbarous. This study critically analyzes the notion of tribes in India as perceived and studied by anthropologists. It also interrogates the Ontology and Epistemic premises of their Knowledge Production on tribes in India. The paper concludes by discussing the various issues on tribal discourse in India.
