I agree with them. Our job as journalists is to tell the truth, but repeatedly we fail. From the great global falsehoods on weapons of mass destruction and millennium bugs to the daily dribble of routine disinformation and distortion, we serve up stories which are no better than the idea that the Earth is flat.” Nick Davies (2008) “Getting PR material into the news is easy. You just need to know what buttons to press.” Bournemouth University BA Public Relations graduate (2012) When news journalism and public relations (PR) meet in the newsroom, there is tension. These two communication types want incompatible outcomes: independent reporting against favourable reporting. At a time when PR is on the rise, the challenge for contemporary journalism is to produce news that retains a critical distance from its sources, no matter how strong the tide of PR. That tide has strengthened in the UK because of the phone hacking-scandals of 2008 to 2011 caused by widespread but often-denied illegal and unethical practices when journalists listened in to private conservations. The British press had to wash its dirty linen before global audiences at the televised Leveson Inquiry into Press Standards (2012) which exposed 260 Kevin Moloney, Daniel Jackson and David McQueen News journalism and public relations: a dangerous relationship 261 the interconnected world of politics, lobbying and media pow- er. Weeks of testimony revealed a near continuous exchange of ideas, emails, dinners and favours between Downing Street and News International. -

Mencap is the leading charity for learning disability. We work in partnership with people with a learning disability and all our services support people to live life as they choose. But we need your help. Although so much has changed in the last 70 years, more needs to be done to raise awareness of the challenges that people with a learning disability face and to help change attitudes towards learning disability. So we are inviting you to enter one of two categories – Print Journalism or Broadcast Journalism. Full details, advice, contacts and guidelines on entering can be found below. For Distribution To CP's Private and Confidential LEVESON INQUIRY RESPONSE FROM STUART HIGGINS: Opening Remarks I am happy to answer all the questions as required by the Leveson Inquiry to the best of my ability and in as helpful a way as possible. But I will be very dependent on my recollections which may fall short on detail. I left the Sun in June 1998, over 13 years ago, after occupying various positions (detailed below) and I am afraid that it is inevitable that my recollection will not be as clear as it would have been before the passage of such time. I have no documents in my possession which can aid me in this process apart from my Service Agreement (dated August 1994) and one or two other documents referred to below. I enclose a copy of the Service Agreement for the Inquiry's consideration, given that in my view, it is an important document which spells out the Duties (Clause 4) of the Editor and the expectations and demands of News International in carrying out that role. You will see the opening phrase of this clause contains the phrase 'use his best endeavours to promote the success and reputation of The Sun and the interests of News International'. While much of that clause is relevant to matters to be considered by the Inquiry, the most salient sub-clauses are: 4.2.2 endeavour so fa r as he can to obtain accurate and authentic information upon all m atters and questions dea lt w ith in The Sun. -

It deals with the topic of British tabloid newspapers and their readers. In many ways, this is a specifically ‘British’ topic – tabloids dominate the British news- paper market, and their particular style of journalism is the subject of much debate. Yet, these newspapers have counterparts in a number of countries, and tabloid journalism continues to spark off controversy at an international level. My hope is therefore that the book can contribute to discussions of the press, journalism and popular culture more widely. I am indebted to several people for managing to complete it. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the readers of the Sun and the Daily Mirror who agreed to take part in the research, generously sharing their experiences. Today, I'm joined down the line by Andy Coulson, the former newspaper editor and now strategy advisor to global chief executives who is, himself, a survivor of crises. As editor of the market-leading News of the World Andy brought readers award- winning campaigns and agenda setting scoops. In 2007 David Cameron hired him - later appointing him as government communications director. He chose to resign from that role, and later faced charges of conspiring to intercept communications, which resulted in a conviction and a five month spell in prison. Andy apologised for the significant mistakes he made as editor but denied - and still denies - breaking the law. He has since launched his own consultancy, advising leading entrepreneurs and presenting ‘Crisis What Crisis?! a podcast in which leading figures discuss life- changing experiences.
