IDF Technical Rules DANCE POP April 2018 – April 2021 INTERNATIONAL DANCE FEDERATION TECHNICAL RULES DISCIPLINE: DANCE POP TIPOLOGY: DANCE POP SOLO: Male – Female DANCE POP COUPLE: Two (2) dancers: one (1) Male and one (1) Female DANCE POP DUO: Two (2) dancers: both Males or both Females DANCE POP SMALL GROUP: Between three (3) and seven (7) dancers DANCE POP FORMATION: Between eight (8) and twenty four (24) dancers DANCE POP PRODUCTION: More than twenty four (24) dancers 1 IDF Technical Rules DANCE POP April 2018 – April 2021 HISTORY OF DANCE POP Dance pop is a genre that combines a range of street dance styles of the 1970s and 1980s era, mainly Street Jazz with the elements of Popping, Locking or Hip-Hop. Dance Pop as a dance genre developed through creating choreographies to pop music (also called funky) and "New Jack Swing" - the form of the post-disco music, characterised by a less syncopated than funk rhythm section and a simple song structure, with a focus on a musical theme and catchy melodies. Famous choreographers of Dance Pop include: Paula Abdul, Tina Landon, Eddie Morales, Marty Koudelka, Travis Payne, Wade Robson, etc. Movements of Dance Pop clearly reflect the nature of music. Typical moves include: syncopated movements, slow motion movements, Batman, rotations, drops, splits and half- splits, expressive poses, jazz dance footwork in conjunction with isolated body movements, gliding, ticking (typical for Popping) as well as elements of Locking and Hip-Hop. It is expected that dancers‟ performance is not a sequence of micro-movements with little co-ordination but a smooth sequence of both fluid, fast and co-ordinated steps supported by good technique, expressiveness and an adequate costume.

Technique Vs. Talent: Narration, Participation, and So You Think You Can Dance Kirsten Pullen Texas A&M University I wish I could dance. Like many, I took dance lessons as a child, and like many, I quit as soon as my mother would let me. But now, when I watch those old Gap khakis ads, or see Chris Brown’s videos, I get the urge to set up a ballet bar in the guest room and let my inner dancer twirl, leap, and glide. I suspect I’m not alone, and the success of the 19E Entertainment-produced, FOX-broadcast So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) seems to confirm my suspicions. There are several reasons behind SYTYCD’s success: it features lithe and lovely boys and girls gyrating against each other; the host, Cat Deeley, is gorgeous and charming; the audience votes for the winner. One reason, however, must be its narrative of talented but less technically proficient dancers triumphing through expressiveness, audience connection, and determination to master unfamiliar idioms. Lythgoe and the other judges appeal to viewers by suggesting that anyone, regardless of training and technique, can dance. In the words of producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe, SYTYCD is the search for America’s favorite dancer. I didn’t watch the first season, when Nick Lazzarini beat his friend Melody Lacayanga and the professionally experienced Blake McGrath for the title. Season 2 pit charismatic swing dancer Benji Schwimmer against twirling Travis Wall, a lyrical dancer who had trained for years; Benji won. Travis’ brother Danny Tidwell, a professional dancer who had studied at the Kirov Academy of Ballet and danced with the American Ballet Theatre was vanquished by Sabra Johnson, a former gymnast with just four years of formal dance training, in Season 3.

DANCE MAKE-UP WORK When you are absent you lose participation points. If your absence is excused, please choose one of the following assignments to make-up your points. To complete this assignment you will need to select a dancer, choreographer, or dance company to research. A list of acceptable artists and companies you may choose from is located below. Option 1: Write a brief (1 page typed, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, your name, class period, date of absence) research paper of a dance company, a dancer and/or a choreographer. The paper should contain information about the artist’s life and career, or company’s background and progress. Write in paragraph form and be sure to use complete sentences, correct spelling, and proper grammar, punctuation and citations. Be sure to include a reference page of at least 3 sources you used. You may use information from the internet, magazines, or books. This assignment can be emailed to your teacher as well as printed out and submitted in class. Option 2: Create a dance poster detailing your research on a dance company, dancer and/or a choreographer. The poster must be creative, legible and neat.
