We are proud and dutybound to support and participate in this year’s SACOS SPORTS FESTIVAL. We conuuit our selves to playing our part to make tliis event tlie largest gatliering of non-racial sportspersons in the history of this country.

The festival will enable oppressed and exploited sports- persons to practically overcome the artificial barriers which divide us into different group areas and “homelands” . In short it will be a resounding affirmation of the unity of the oppressed and exploited on the principled basis of non racialism.

This festival ushers in a new era for SACOS. It paves the way for more national non-racial festivals in the future. Moreover it reflects on a national level the progressive development of." (SAC’s), that mobilise ordinary players along non-racial lines.

For us in Volleyball this festival has special significance be cause AVAS.A was fomied during this year, the year of the festival. We were inspired by the organisers who encouraged us from the time we formed this national body. This again demonstrates that SACOS is a dynamic organisation eager to draw into its ambit all who can play a part in the non-racial struggle.

For all the players this festival is a just rew'ard for their per severance against tremendous odds. The state, the represen tatives of the bosses, deprives them of facilities; is trying to give racial stooge bodies control of facilities; approves the increased hire charges for these facilities and victimises ad ministrators, among other measures. For SACOS to remain strong and to gather strength in the face of all this is indeed to its credit. We are sure that the performance of the parti cipants will likewise be creditable and be filled with the spirit of constructive and healthy competition. This festival ushers in a new era for SACOS. It paves the way Let us strive to make tliis festival as much a CELEBRATION for more national non-racial festivals in the future. THE BUILD-UP TO THE 1982 SACOS SPORTS FESTfVAL SQUASH On the weekend of 21 August 1982, about 150 squash play ers, amongst them some of the top non-racial squash players in the country, competed in the 1982 Natal Open Squash Tournament. These included 32 players from Western Prov GROWING ince and 10 players from Transvaal. An inter-provincial com petition was also organised, in which teams from Natal, Western Province and Transvaal participated. The SACOS and PRESIDENT’S teams were selected largely on the basis of performance in these matches. Dear Friends,

The Southern Africa Support Campaign is a National O rganisation in solidarity with the people of Azania and Namibia. On behalf of our branches throughout Australia and individual members we wish to extend to you our admiration and support for the courageous work your organisation is doing.

The white minority regime and its paid stooges are intensifying their campaign to hood-wink the world into believing they have changed their policies of promoting racist sport. This is evidenced by the spate of "multi-racial" rugby, and soccer tours recently. These of course failed miserably in every sense.

We support your efforts to expose such fraudulent moves.

What might not be very clear to many people is the reason N o n -ra c ia l for this sports festival. For many years now the sportspersons in our ranks have been loyal to their organisatiori. They have played on dustbowls, ashheaps, struggled against City Coun cil Management Committees, resisted harassment from sport means Security police. They have travelled hundreds of kilometers to play and administer sport, held meetings in front room lounges, the dingiest of places, on soccer grounds (as com pared to the bout of using facilities at International Hotels, s a c rific e ' from the Urban foundation. Department of Sport etc) . To top this all they have managed all this virtually without sponsorship. The big-time business corporations and the state work hand in hand to deprive the non-racial sportspersons of much needed and deserved cash. This despite the fact that these very same corporations earn more than half of their ...TRACOS profits from the black people in this country.
