(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

The Effect of Hedonic Motivation and Consumer Attitudes Towards Purchase Decision on K-Pop CD Albums (Study on KPOPSURABAYA Community) Devita Anggraini Lestari1, Monika Tiarawati2 State University of Surabaya [email protected], [email protected] Abstract: The rapid enthusiasm of Korean pop music or K-Pop is very high among the millennial generation. The mushrooming of online music streaming like Joox, Spotify, Apple music has made the CD album sales threatened. However, K-Pop fans apparently are still enthusiastic about buying a CD album even though the price is quite expensive. This study discusses the hedomic motivations and consumers attitudes towards purchasing decisions. This type of research used in this study is a combination of purposive sampling techniques. Data collection is done by using an online questionnaire using Google forms. The statistical analysis used in this study uses SPSS and data analysis techniques in this study use the classic assumption test, multiple linear regression analysis, and hypothesis testing. It can be explained that the results of the analysis show that hedonic motivations and consumer attitudes has significant influential on purchasing decisions. Keywords: Consumer Attitudes, Hedonic Motivation, Purchase Decision INTRODUCTION The mushrooming of boyband’s or girlband’s concert tours in Indonesia shows that how much Korean music is more interested in this country compared to other countries' musicians marked by a Super Junior concert titled Super Show 4 on April 2012 in Indonesia that makes Indonesian music fans love them. Indonesia became a stop on their concert tour, such as BIGBANG, 2NE1, 2PM, to BTS. According to Franki Raden (2014) in (Zaini, 2017), the development of K-pop due to the availability of infrastructure and mechanisms, Korea has succeeded in instilling awareness of the importance of music in people's daily lives. -

D. ABSTRACT Stemming from a recent surge in articles related to Korean masculinities, and based in a feminist and queer Marxist theoretical framework, this paper asks how gender, with a specific focus on what is referred to as soft masculinity, is constructed through K-pop performances, as well as what power structures are in play. By reading studies on pan-Asian masculinities and gender performativity - taking into account such factors as talnori and kkonminam, and investigating conceptual terms flower boy, aegyo, and girl crush - it forms a baseline for a qualitative research project. By conducting qualitative interviews with Swedish K-pop fans and performing semiotic analysis of K-pop music videos, the thesis finds that although K-pop masculinities are perceived as feminine to a foreign audience, they are still heavily rooted in a heteronormative framework. Furthermore, in investigating the production of gender performativity in K-pop, it finds that neoliberal commercialism holds an assertive grip over these productions and are thus able to dictate ‘conceptualizations’ of gender and project identities that are specifically tailored to attract certain audiences. Lastly, the study shows that these practices are sold under an umbrella of ‘loyalty’ in which fans are incentivized to consume in order to show support for their idols – in which the concept of desire plays a significant role. Understanding Korean Society Through Popular Music

Bergen (Yonsei University, Seoul) Understanding Korean Society through Popular Music Today one of the most unique aspects of inter-Asian cultural sharing is the hallyu wave. This social phenomenon began in Seoul, South Korea and today accounts for the all pervasive nature of Korean popular entertainment dominating the airwaves of nearly every Asian country. From Japan to Thailand, “K-pop” has conquered the Asian market, and is now turning its attention to the rest of the world. In order to illustrate this current social phenomenon, I have found many sources that all point to the same aspects in K-pop which have allowed one small country to make their entertainment business one of its most lucrative exports. The hallyu wave as a whole has become a blending of uniquely Korean culture with aspects of Western and other Asian cultures which has created a style unique to this particular moment of history. In the words of Sun Jung, author of the article “Korean Masculinities and Transcultural Consumption: Yonsama, Rain, Oldboy, K-Pop Idols,” “Transcultural hybridity is one of the most significant aspects of contemporary South Korean popular culture in the postmodern era and is the main driving force behind its overseas popularity” (Jung 166). This combination has allowed the music and film from Korea to be extremely accessible to a wide audience of various nationalities and languages. In order to clearly illustrate the international success of hallyu, I will focus on one specific aspect of current Korean popular culture: music. -

Introduction Hallyu refers to the phenomenon of Korean popular culture which came into vogue in Southeast Asia and mainland China in late 1990s. Especially, hallyu is very popular among young people enchanted with Korean music (K-pop), dramas (K-drama), movies, fashion, food, and beauty in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, etc. This cultural phenomenon has been closely connected with multi-layered transnational movements of people, information and capital flows in East Asia. Since the 15th century, East and West have been the two subjects of cultural phenomena. Such East–West dichotomy was articulated by Westerners in the scholarly tradition known as “Orientalism.”During the Age of Exploration (1400–1600), West didn’t only take control of East by military force, but also created a new concept of East/Orient, as Edward Said analyzed it expertly in his masterpiece Orientalism in 1978. Throughout the history of imperialism for nearly 4-5 centuries, west was a cognitive subject, but East was an object being recognized by the former. Accordingly, “civilization and modernization” became the exclusive properties of which West had copyright (?!), whereas East was a “sub-subject” to borrow or even plagiarize from Western standards. In this sense, (making) modern history in East Asia was a compulsive imitation of Western civilization or a catch-up with the West in other wards. Thus, it is interesting to note that East Asian people, after gaining economic power through “compressed modernization,”1 are eager to be main agents of their cultural activities in and through the enjoyment of East Asian popular culture in a postmodern era. -

Abstract Korean pop culture (K-Pop) has spread its influence outside of Korea to a worldwide fan audience. The present study investigated the self-categorised K-Pop fandom characteristics that predicted higher levels of K-Pop fanship, and subsequent psychosocial outcomes. Social identity theory was applied as a theoretical framework. In total, 1477 K-Pop fans from 92 predominantly Western countries fully completed an extensive online survey measuring fanship, fandom and psychosocial outcomes (happiness, self-esteem and social connectedness). Results of this study indicated that K- Pop fanship was significantly predicted by a several K-Pop demographic and fandom characteristics. K-Pop fanship was a significant predictor of increased happiness, self-esteem and social connectedness. The study findings advance the application of social identity theory in a K-Pop fan context and the psychological fanship research more broadly. A key difference is the absence or presence of agency. Whereas boy group content may market towards the female gaze, their content is crafted by a largely male creative staff or the idols themselves, affording the idols agency over their choices or placing them in power holding positions. Contrasted, girl groups are marketed towards the male gaze, by a largely male creative staff and with less idols participating. -

KOREAN DISCOURSE AND GENRE Materials for Intermediate/Advanced Korean Based on the National Standards Susan Strauss and HeeSun Chang The Pennsylvania State University The Korean Wave — 한류 (韓韓): K-POP 엑소 (EXO) ©CENTER FOR ADVANCED LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (CALPER) – THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY 1 THE KOREAN WAVE 한류 (韓韓) INTRODUCTION The Standards for Korean Language Teaching have recently been developed and published through ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). They center on five basic concepts, referred to as the 5Cs: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities and are intended to replace the more mechanical and artificial categories of proficiency, commonly known as the “4 skills” of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The 5Cs of the Standards shift the focus away from the “skill” of language and instead highlight elements of language that are linked to people and culture and discourse. At the same time, the Standards provide teachers and learners with specific, concrete sets of goals to strive for in learning and teaching Korean. The units developed in this series, Korean Discourse and Genre, are designed to complement existing pedagogical materials for Korean. They contain authentic, media-based samples of actual language used in Korea by Koreans for specific interactional purposes: television programs (e.g., talk shows, reality shows, news, weather reports), radio programs, films, internet-based discourse (interviews, reviews, blogs, news items, recipes), and the like. The focus of our units is on Discourse and Genre. Discourse relates generally to language and how language is used in these various communicative contexts. Genre refers to the specific ways in which particular features of language combine to create a certain type of discourse, e.g., conversation, expository writing, formal interview, recipes, weather reports, diary entries, and so forth. -

This study pursues an investigation of the influences of Korean popular culture on preference for Korean restaurants through a country image of Korea. In addition, the study examines the influences of Korean culture in terms of Korean celebrities, Korean television dramas, and Korean popular music on an image of Korea. A quantitative approach is applied in this research. This study is beneficial to Vietnamese restaurant operators and governments by providing the information for developing strategies for expanding our ethnic restaurants into Vietnam markets and formulating governmental and industrial policies for globalization of ethnic food and restaurant industries.
