With this solemn celebration of the baptism, P A R I S H N E W S we too are sent back into the days called “Ordinary THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Time,” reminded that God has spoken these same JANUARY 10, 2016 words to us at our baptism: You are my son, my daughter. I delight in you. I send you forth to serve as He saved us through the bath of rebirth my Son, Jesus, went forth to serve, accompanied by and renewal by the Holy Spirit. the Holy Spirit. - Titus 3:5 TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11. Psalm - The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104. Second Reading - Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7. Gospel - A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22). LIVING GOD’S WORD We pray as Jesus prayed that we might hear the voice of the Father, a voice that speaks of God’s love for us. We ask that we might allow that Spirit, God’s holy breath that came upon us at our own baptism, to move us out into the world in service to those most in need whom God has set before us. REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD The other night I was looking out the window as the sun was setting and the layers of clouds allowed the sun to create an extraordinary sunset, painting some clouds with a golden hue, while others were orange and red, moving to purple and gray. It was a stunning moment. The baptism of Jesus is one of those brief moments of beauty, occurring in the first three Gospels (and alluded to in the fourth). Luke’s account differs from the others in that MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT the dramatic moment does not occur as Jesus is The Christmas season closes this Sunday with coming up out of the water but only after his baptism, the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last while he is praying. Luke’s Gospel has been called the week's feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates Gospel of prayer, and from its beginning the adult an "epiphany," or a manifestation of the Spirit of God Jesus is presented as one who prays. At this moment in Jesus--first in his birth, and now at his baptism. of intimacy, “heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the descended upon him in bodily form like a dove” scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the (Luke 3:21–22). While he was at prayer, the voice Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while spoke to him: “You are my beloved Son; with you I the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring am well pleased” (3:22). From here on we find that Israel. In Luke's account of the baptism of the Lord Jesus is under the influence of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to this Spirit directs him first into the desert to be tested, Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was "richly poured out" on us also, through the "bath of rebirth" 2016 MASS BOOK: (Titus 3:5, 6). It will be necessary for everyone who would like to TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION schedule Masses for their loved ones in 2015 to come to the rectory or call (718) 447-3937. Thank you and Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting God Bless. with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John's Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to WIADOMOŚCI PARAFIALNE collect flowing water into vessels they brought from UROCZYSTOŚĆ CHRZTU PAŃSKIEGO home since "today there is a blessing on the water." 10 STYCZNIA 2016 At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one Cytat dnia: another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Otwarło się niebo i zabrzmiał głos Ojca: Christmas candle in the window one last time. • 2018 Annual Report CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION RICCARDO MUTI Zell Music Director Message from the Chair
2018 annual report CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION RICCARDO MUTI Zell Music Director message from the chair dear cso friends and family, The 2017/18 season was a wonderful example of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s profound impact as a cultural leader. With artistic excellence as their hallmark, Riccardo Muti and the talented Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra continued to endear themselves wherever they performed—from their handsome Burnham home at 220 South Michigan Avenue to the north, south, and west sides of the city and beyond. Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti has won over audiences through his music-making as well as his demonstrated commitment to sharing classical music with a broad audience since his appointment in 2010. A great example of this from last season was the standing room only, free, community concert at Lane Tech High School in November. Later, in January, we were extremely pleased to announce that Maestro Muti would be extending his contract through 2022 with the promise of continuing to bring the CSO to ever-higher levels of achievement and influence. Serving as ambassadors for the City of Chicago, Muti and the Orchestra toured both coasts last season. Their reputation preceded them at every location, and they surpassed expectations in performance. Emblematic of the belief that the power of art is timeless, three recent CSO commissions were programmed alongside pillars of the symphonic repertoire on these tours. It is a tremendous undertaking when the Orchestra travels, but one well worth the effort in order to share the artistry of the CSO with new and eager audiences.

FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2020 THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA It was in 1885 that the Thirteenth Territorial Legislature founded the University of Arizona with an appropriation of $25,000 — but no land. This appropriation was not welcomed by many residents of Tucson and Pima County, as they were looking for either the state Capitol building, a prison, or even an asylum for the insane — but definitely not a university. The money would be available on the condition that the community provided a suitable site. Just before the $25,000 was to be returned to the Legislature, two gamblers and a saloon-keeper donated 40 acres of land “way out east of town,” and thus the University could become a reality. Classes began in 1891 with 32 students and six teachers, all accommodated in one building. The first class graduated in 1895, when three students received their degrees. Today, the University of Arizona is one of the nation's top public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report. It has grown to more than 45,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff members across the University, which includes the main campus, the College of Applied Science & Technology in Sierra Vista, the College of Medicine – Phoenix and Arizona Online. The University is organized into 21 colleges and 23 schools. It is one of the top 10 employers in Arizona, with an economic impact of more than $1 billion in fiscal year 2017 as a result of the University’s research expenditures. 156th Annual Arizona COMMENCEMENT Table of Contents STREAMED PROGRAM · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·
