Tigers Ranked Fifth Preseason in AP, Highest Preseason Rating Since 1991-92 The LSU men's basketball team received its second highest preseason ranking ever in the Associated Press poll when the media voted LSU No. 5 in the 2006-07 Top 25 announced earlier this month. LSU was ranked for the 11th time in the preseason AP poll and the first time since being ranked sixth in the 1991-92 preseason AP voting. The only time LSU was ranked higher in the preseason was the 1989-90 season when the Tigers were ranked No. 2. Florida got 63 of the 72 first-place votes and 1,788 total points to be ranked No.1, with North Carolina getting the other nine first-place markers and 1,704 points for second. Kansas is third and is in front of LSU in fourth.

Tigers Drop To Seventh Without Playing … We'll See What Effect Playing Has? The Tigers were the last in the Southeastern Conference to play an official game and also one of the final 11 in the country to start, and while waiting to play, some of the media moved LSU in the second AP poll down two spots to seventh, matching the ranking in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll … LSU will have had two games before the coming poll and if LSU is able to win both games, it will be interesting to see which way LSU will move, if any, in the third polls of the year.

Davis Earns First-Team Preseason A-A Honors LSU junior forward Glen Davis was named preseason All-American by the Associated Press Tuesday on a team that featured three Southeastern Conference players. Davis, a first-team Wooden All-American last season and a second-team AP All-American a year ago, joins Joakim Noah of Florida and Ronald Steele of Alabama in making first-team A-A. Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Brandon Rush of Kansas round out the first five. Davis (who led the SEC in scoring and rebounding a year ago to earn Player of the Year honors), Noah and Steele are all juniors, while Hansbrough and Rush are sophomores. Hansbrough was named on 65 of the 72 media bal- lots, one more than Noah. Steele received 55 votes, while Davis had 51 and Rush 26. UCLA junior guard Arron Affalo was the next-leading vote getter with 20. Since the AP preseason team started in 1986-87, Davis is just the third player from LSU to make the first five, joining Chris Jackson in 1989-90 and Shaquille O'Neal prior to the 1991-92 season. Ronald Dupree is the only other LSU player to have been mentioned on a ballot, prior to the 2001-02 season.

But Dameon Mason, a lifetime for him Steals Average 10.0 8.3 removed from his last game in March 2005, made a good impression on fans in the two exhibition games against EA Sports (11/9) and Louisiana College (11/15). Mason averaged a co-team high 15.5 points in the two exhibition games, hitting 12-of-17 field goal attempts while grabbing 12 rebounds with eight assists ... The most important line came in the game against Louisiana College when he had seven assists and no turnovers in 36 minutes of play. Against Nicholls, Mason had five points with two rebounds and a three-pointer in 22 minutes of play.

Glen Davis The Baton Rouge junior opened the season by continuing his string of 41 consecutive double figure scoring games dating back to the final four games of his freshman season in 2005 and each of the 36 games of the 2005- 06 season ... Davis had 16 points in the win against Nicholls State. Davis, who has started 66 consecutive games after coming off the bench in the first game of his freshman season, has 29 career double-doubles after 19 a year ago ... In a year when three of the Associated Press first-team All- Americans were from the SEC, Davis will be trying to post back-to-back player of the year honors in the league for the first time since Corliss Williamson of Arkansas was named player of the year in both 1994 and 1995 ... LSU's Pete Maravich was a three-time AP Player of the Year, while Chris Jackson was a consensus POY in 1989 and 1990 followed by Shaquille O'Neal in 1991 and 1992. Davis is making moves on both the school scoring and rebounding chart … He presently stands 30th in scoring with 1,091 career markers … Here's the way the chart looks in front of him that he will go by in upcoming games, including today's TV analyst Collis Temple III:

26. Collis Temple III (1999-03) -- 1,173 pts 27. Don Redden (1982-86) -- 1,119 pts 28. Wayne Sims (1987-91) -- 1,107 pts 29. Bob Meador (1947-51) -- 1,099 pts 30. Glen Davis (2004-present) -- 1,091 pts

In rebounds, Davis' total stands at 621, presently 20th … Here's what future games hold for him on the rebounding chart:

17. Roger Sigler (1953-56) -- 713 rebs. 18. Nikita Wilson (1983-87) -- 699 rebs. 19. Clarence Ceasar (1991-95) -- 670 rebs. 20. Glen Davis (2004-present) -- 621 rebs.

And while some of the block leaders have number impossible to reach, Davis is also moving up in that list as well:
