Cold Wars 2019 War College Speaker Bios Battle of East Cavalry Field Friday 10 am Thomas Dempsey, Colonel, US Army (ret.). Former instructor at the U.S. Army War College, including guiding War College Staff Rides at the Gettysburg Battlefield over a period of ten years. Thomas Dempsey The Hush-Hush Army: The Adventures of Dunsterforce, 1918 Friday 2 pm Bob Giglio has been involved in wargaming, in one form or another, for over forty years. As a game master, his games have been featured at every major gaming convention in the U.S. including Origins, GENCON, and many Historical Miniatures Gaming Society (HMGS) conventions, for which he has won many awards. Bob served as U.S. Editor of Battlefields magazine (Partizan Press), and Assistant Editor of Historical Miniature Gaming magazine (Legio X). Bob has written over a Bob Giglio dozen articles for Wargames Illustrated (WI). As the WI Liaison in the U.S., he continues to plan and run the WI Showcase Game at HMGS conventions. Bob has authored four English Civil War (ECW) gaming scenario books, all published by Partizan Press. His newest, is a 16-scenario WWI book, The Adventures of Dunsterforce, 1918 (Partizan Press). All of his books are available in the Vendor Hall from On Military Matters. Bob served on the HMGS Board of Directors (1995-2001) and eleven HMGS conventions as a Convention Director: FALL IN! (1997-2001) and HISTORICON (2006-2011). Bob was inducted into the HMGS Legion of Honor (2008) and awarded the HMGS Jack Scruby Award (2013), for excellence in the hobby. Mountain Warfare Friday 4 pm LTC(P) Humphrey is currently attending the Army War College in Carlisle, PA. His previous acquisition assignments include the Product Manager for the Enhanced Command and Control program at the Missile Defense Agency, assignments with the PM Future Combat System, PM Ground Combat Vehicle, TARDEC, PM Bradley under PM Armored Brigade Combat Team, Department of the Army Systems Coordinator (DASC) at the Pentagon, and the Regional Command LTC (P) Ian South/Southwest/West Acquisition Advisor for Operation Enduring Freedom. Humphrey LTC(P) Humphrey was commissioned in the Field Artillery upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1997. He was assigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Here he served as an Aviation Battalion Fire Support Officer (Blackhawk company), Battery Operations Officer and Fire Direction Officer with Bravo Battery, 4-11 FA and finally as the XO for the Brigade Headquarters Company. LTC(P) Humphrey was then assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery (MLRS) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer and as Battery Commander for Charlie Battery, 3-13 FA (MLRS). Less than two months after taking command, LTC(P) Humphrey deployed his battery as part of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 3rd ID to Kuwait in January of 2003 and became Delta Battery, 1-39 FA (MLRS) as the third firing battery for the Division MLRS battalion for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following command he served as a Company and Battalion Tactical Officer at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The Modern Chinese Navy Saturday 10 am Larry Bond is a writer and game designer. After co-authoring Red Storm Rising with Tom Clancy, he has teamed with several different authors to write eighteen novels. He has also co-designed the award-winning Admiralty Trilogy series games, which include Harpoon, Command at Sea, Fear God & Dread Nought, and Dawn of the Battleship. Larry Bond A U.S. Navy veteran, Larry was a Surface Warfare officer before leaving the Navy in 1982. He then worked as a naval analyst for defense consulting firms in the Washington, DC area. He now writes and designs games full-time. Larry is 67 and lives with his wife Jeanne in Virginia, outside Washington DC. No Friends but the Mountains Saturday, 3:00 pm Judith Matloff teaches conflict reporting at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She has been writing about international affairs for 30 years. After receiving a BA from Harvard, she worked as a staff correspondent for Judith Matloff Reuters and the Christian Science Monitor on various continents before breaking out as an independent magazine writer. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Economist and Financial Times among others. Matloff’s writing about troubled regions has been supported by various organizations including the MacArthur Foundation, the Fulbright Scholar Program and Hoover Institution. She belongs to PEN and has pioneered safety training for journalists around the world, consulting for a wide range of international media groups. She lives in New York City with her family. Panzeri Jr. veteran, Pete Panzeri most recently published book is Killing bin Laden: Operation Neptune Spear. US ARMY (Rtd.) He is best known for his first award winning book Little Big Horn 1876: Custer’s Last Stand, recipient of the Editor’s Choice Award from the Military Book Club, The Order of the Indian Wars” and his book has been reprinted 13 times since 1996 by Osprey, Praegar Press and Military Book Club Publishing. Pete was selected as the keynote speaker for Little Big Horn 125th Anniversary Commemoration, is often called to lead U.S. Military and Collegiate “Battlefield Staff Rides” and serves as a documentary advisor and speaker for battles and tactics of the Great Plains Wars. As a military professional, Panzeri’s 30-year U.S. Army career included service as a Drill Sergeant, 82nd Airborne Paratrooper, infantry company and battalion command assignments and multiple overseas deployments. His decorations include The Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the “Order of Saint Maurice.” He is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Old Dominion University, in Virginia, and Graduate School Degree in Military History at The Ohio State University. His instructor assignments included Chief of Military History at the US Army Infantry School, Tactics Chief at the Military Intelligence School, and three years teaching while assigned to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. His wargame publications include Crazy Horse Rules! Warfare in the American West 1800-1900, “PLAINS WAR CAMPAIGNS” and his Origins Award recognized: Santa Anna Rules! Warfare in Mexico 1820-1820 (with Buck Surdu Volumes I and II.) His periodical articles include the cover-article for the Wargames Illustrated Anniversary 300th Issue special edition. Pete’s most recent wargame publication FRONTIERS IN FLAMES: WARFARE IN NORTH AMERICA 1600-1900 is published by Old Glory Press. Pete also served several years as Dean of the Origins War College, was the 2014 selectee for the “Duke Seifried GM of the Year Award” and was inducted into the HMGS LEGION OF HONOR in 2002. Scott Hansen has excelled as a Military History researcher, lecturer, game- designer and award winning game master for over 30 years. Scott is recognized as a frequent HMGS War College speaker for over 20 years. He’s enhanced the Kansas military history programs with his excellent topics and keen Insight. He has always given avid support for Historical Miniatures Gaming Society conventions. He is recently most known for his role in the dramatic “Custer Court Martial” debate at HMGS Cold Wars 2017. As a historical wargame designer, Scott has been instrumental in the research, Scott Hansen development and publishing of multiple innovative wargame systems including K.I.S.S. ROMMEL, SUTIC Skirmish Rules, Duke Seifried’s Napoleonette’s and many others. Scott was also selected as an “A TEAM” Game Master for the late Duke Seifried’s Retrospective Events, and served with Duke for many years as a Feature Game Master at HISTORICON, ORIGINS, GENCON, LITTLE WARS and many other conventions across the USA. As a Military History scholar, wargame designer, award winning game master, speaker and actor, Chris King has enhanced seminars, films, and Historical Miniatures Gaming conventions for over 25 years. He is most known for his role as the successful defense attorney (and co-producer) in the dramatic “General Patton Court Martial” production, and for His research and insight in producing “The Greatest Tank Battles in History” program. Chris was also a key event organizer and game-master for the HMGS-South Sponsored WATERLOO 200th Anniversary Commemoration, and has played a key role in game design and development of multiple Origins Awards recognized Wargame systems. Chris King Devon is a commentator and game design seminar panelist for HMGS COLD WARS 2018. He is an experienced critic and reviewer for Historical Miniatures Game rules. As a second generation wargamer, Devon has sampled evaluated countless game rules systems since his first Historicon 1986 at the Penn-Harris in Harrisburg, PA. His experience dates back over 40 years to his participation the original New York Wargamers Association, where he learned techniques from wargame publisher and award-winning game-master Dave Waxtel, terrain secrets from epic-builder Tom Milmore, and many nuances of game design from Jack Scruby Devon Start Award winner Arty Conliffe. He is currently a game designer and developer for several major new projects. He is also a veteran game-master, gifted figure sculptor and avid miniatures painter. Brian Beal has degrees in Military History & Archaeology, as well as a lifetime of achievement in designing and presenting historical miniature wargames. He has been the Convention Director of Heart of America HMGS Borderwars and Call to Arms game conventions in Kansas City as far back as anyone can remember.
