The most diverse order was perciformes with 175 species, 100 genera and 43 families. The top four families with the highest number of species were gobidae (28 species), carangidae (23 species), engraulidae (15 species) and lutjanidae (14 species). Conservation status of all taxa includes one species as endangered, five species as vulnerable, 14 near threatened, 93 least concern and 16 data deficient. As numbers of commercial, sports, ornamental and cultivable fishes are high, commercial and recreational fishing could be organized. Seed production by selective breeding is recommended for aquaculture practices in estuarine areas of Tamil Nadu. Phylogenetic relationships of 43 species in 11 genera, representing four subfamilies of the family Lutjanidae and two genera of the family Caesionidae, were inferred using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Further assessment using the mtDNA control region (CR) was carried out to infer the relationship between the Indian and western Pacific types of Lutjanus russellii collected from the coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 11 and 12 species were sequenced for COI and CR genes, respectively. Clade formation reflects, to some extent, the species groupings based on morphological characteristics and their biogeography. The close phylogenetic relationship between Pinjalo pinjalo and the Lutjanus red snappers (Lutjanus malabaricus and Lutjanus sebae) warrants a taxonomic revision of the former as the two genera are currently separated based on non-exclusive morphological characters. A compilation of 107 references dealing with fish parasites in New Caledonia permitted the production of a parasite-host list and a host-parasite list. The lists include Turbellaria, Monopisthocotylea, Polyopisthocotylea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Copepoda, Isopoda, Acanthocephala and Hirudinea, with 580 host-parasite combinations, corresponding with more than 370 species of parasites. Protozoa are not included. Platyhelminthes are the major group, with 239 species, including 98 monopisthocotylean monogeneans and 105 digeneans. Copepods include 61 records, and nematodes include 41 records. The list of fish recorded with parasites includes 195 species, in which most (ca. 170 species) are coral reef associated, the rest being a few deep-sea, pelagic or freshwater fishes. The serranids, lethrinids and lutjanids are the most commonly represented fish families. Although a list of published records does not provide a reliable estimate of biodiversity because of the important bias in publications being mainly in the domain of interest of the authors, it provides a basis to compare parasite biodiversity with other localities, and especially with other coral reefs. The present list is probably the most complete published account of parasite biodiversity of coral reef fishes. -

Data parameters about the morphology and early life history pattern not measured during the survey were taken from the FishBase data base (see www.fishbase.org and Froese et al., 2000). These data parameters included, Lmax (maximum length), Linf (length infinity); K (growth rate); M (natural mortality); LS (life span); Lm (length at maturity); tm (age at first maturity); to (age at zero length); tmax (longevity) and also the morphological data. Morphological and life history data were taken only for five species of fishes belongs to genus Lutjanus i.e., L.johnii, L.malabaricus, L.lutjanus, L.fulvus, L.russellii. The main objective of this study was to review some aspects of distribution, morphology and feeding habits, spawning and also acquired and analyze information on selected life history variables to described patterns of variation among different species of snappers. Keywords: Lutjanidae, morphology, life history. INTRODUCTION This family is commonly known as “Snappers” are perch-like fishes, moderately elongated, fairly compressed (Allen and Talbot, 1985). Small to large fishes, ranging from 15cm-120cm or 1m in length and 40 kg in weight. Mouth is terminal, jaw bear large canine teeth (no canines in Apherius); Preopercle usually serrate. Dorsal fin continuous or slightly notched with 10-12 spines and 10-17 soft rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 7-11 soft rays; pelvic fins originating just behind pectoral base. -

The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. This study reports on (1) variations in the number and position of scleral ossicles in 283 actinopterygian species representing 172 families, (2) the distribution of the morphological variants of these bony elements, (3) the phylogenetic significance of these variations, and (4) a phylogenetic hypothesis relevant to the position of the Callionymoidei, Dactylopteridae, and Syngnathoidei based on these osteological variations. The results suggest that the Callionymoidei (not including the Gobiesocidae), Dactylopteridae, and Syngnathoidei are closely related. This conclusion was based on the apomorphic character state of having only the anterior scleral ossicle. Corresponding author: Ryohei Miki, [email protected] Abstract A checklist is presented of ponyfish species (Teleostei, Leiognathidae) from the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, eastern coast of Kyushu, in the warm temperate zone of Japan and in areas influenced by the warm Kuroshio Current. Fish collection surveys (autumn, October 2016 to winter, early 2017) recorded 9 species of the family, including 1 collected by previous authors. Records of 3 species, Gazza minuta (Bloch, 1795), Leiognathus equulus (Forsskål, 1775), and Leiognathus fasciatus (Lacepède, 1803), extended their distributional ranges northward by ca 150–500 km. These 3 species and 3 others are distributed mainly in the tropical zone, and, combined with previous records of leiognathid fishes along the coasts influenced by the Kuroshio Current in southern Japan, this study shows a continuous distribu- tion pattern of these tropical species, suggesting that the east coast of Kyushu is also influenced by this warm current. -

Eubleekeria splendens is also known as slimy, belong Leiognathidae family. They inhabit marine and brackish waters in the Indian and West Pacific Oceans. Aqueous crude extract was prepared from dried fish and chitosan was extracted from the respective fish scales. The germination and growth promoting activity of the crude extracts and extracted chitosan was studied using mung bean. The prepared samples were prepared in different concentration and the seeds were soaked and germination rate was determined after 24hr. 20ppm of E.splendens chitosan was found to be the lowest optimum concentration. the soaking time required for seed germination was studies and it was found that Chitosan gave good germination rate at 4-6hr soaking. Stem height, total numbers of leaves, average leaf length and width were noted after one week of growing the seed in the extracts and extracted chitosan. E.splendens Chitosan showed higher growth promoting activity than R.kanagurtachitosan. the study confirmed that just like shrimp and crab chitosan, extracted chitosan from fish scales also shows good germination and growth promoting activity. -

Dr. Muwardi No. 17, Renon, Denpasar, Bali 80235, Indonesia Abstract Two new species of snappers, genus Lutjanus, are described from Indo-West Pacific seas.Lutjanus indicus is de- scribed from 20 specimens, 54.7–226 mm SL, from western Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and Bahrain. It has also been photographed at Oman and the Andaman Islands (tissue sample also taken). It has invariably been confused with its sibling species, L. russellii, from the western Pacific. Comparison of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) genetic marker utilised in DNA barcoding produced a genetic divergence of about 4.1 % between L. indicus and its closest congener, L. russellii. In addition, significant colour differences are useful for separating the two species, specifically a series of seven narrow yellow-to-brown stripes on the side, obliquely rising (except lower two) dorsally and posteriorly, which are present on both juveniles and adults of L. indicus. Lutjanus papuensis is described from four specimens, 173–259 mm SL, collected at Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua and purchased from fish markets at Bali and western Java, Indonesia. It has also been observed at Timor Leste, northern Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It is most closely related to L. -

DNA Barcoding is increasingly recognized as a new approach for the recognition and identification of animal species by using cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene. This approach is highly dependent on readily availabe COI sequences in public databases. However, the accuracy of species identification and the quality of COI sequences available in public databases such as GenBank and BOLD Systems are still unknown. Here, a total of 232 sequences of 24 species from Family Leiognathidae has been downloaded from these public databases. A total of 14 COI sequences showed ambiguous sites and therefore were excluded for further analysis. From all the sequences that has been downloaded, a total of 88 sequences has been detected as potential misidentification as these sequences did not group with their own taxa. The mean intraspecific K2P divergences were 1.44% among individuals within species and 5.63% within the genera. There are four species (Equulites elongatus, Equulites leuciscus, Gazza minuta and Secutor indicius) that had shown deep divergences among individuals.
