To the Student:

We hope this scholarship booklet will be helpful to you in applying for 2016-2017 school year scholarships. Every effort was made to gather the most accurate information regarding local, state and national scholarship opportunities.

Most scholarships have opening and closing dates. We post the scholarships on our websites. At that time they are available to students for completion. We would like you to follow the procedures below in applying for these scholarships:

1. APPLICATIONS: When you see that we are now accepting applications for a designated scholarship, you may then pick up the application in the guidance office or from the website. Some scholarship applications through the Wayne County Community Foundation will be completed online.

Some physical applications may be available in the guidance office. We do not get all applications in January. We receive them sporadically throughout the year. If you see that you are taking the last application, please let us know.

If the scholarship is through the Wayne County Community Foundation, the scholarship application can also be found on their website at www.waynecountycommunityfoundation.org or email them at [email protected]. Some applications are completed online, while others may be downloaded.

2. DEADLINES: Keep careful track of application deadlines. Due dates are established by the sponsoring organization and are usually non-negotiable. Missing a deadline can be a costly mistake. Students are responsible for making sure applications are electronically submitted, mailed and/or postmarked on time. Applications being returned to the high school counselor do NOT need to be mailed to the school. To conserve on postage, please feel free to hand deliver those completed application packets.

3. RECOMMENDATIONS: If the scholarship requires letters of recommendation, please give the counselor and/or teacher(s) at least two weeks notice. Requests made the day an application is due will not be honored.

4. ACTIVITY SHEET: Most of the applications require a list of your school activities, community activities, sports, honors, etc. You may want to create an attractive personal data sheet or “brag” sheet on the computer, make good copies, and attach to the application.

5. TRANSCRIPT: If a transcript is required for an application, please submit a transcript request form. Requests should be made at least one day in advance of needing the transcript.

6. THANK YOU LETTER: Students receiving a scholarship are strongly encouraged to send the sponsor or organization a letter or card of appreciation.

We wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions, please see your guidance counselor.

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

Why complete the FAFSA? Everyone going to college should complete the FAFSA! The federal government uses the information on the FAFSA form to determine a student’s eligibility for financial aid and the amount of that aid. Federal aid can come in the form of free money such as grants or borrowed money such as loans. Normally, federal student loans have lower interest rates and provide a deferment period while a student is enrolled in college.

What do I need to complete the FAFSA? Parents and students need their previous year’s tax information in order to accurately complete the FAFSA. Estimated information can be used, but corrections must be made if the information entered is different than that on your tax forms. Other information needed; Social Security Number, driver’s license number (if applicable), current bank statements, and other investment documents.

When should I complete the FAFSA? Students should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, to maximize their financial aid opportunities. The FAFSA must be completed every year to be eligible for aid for the following school year.

How do I complete the FAFSA? Visit the FAFSA website at www.fafsa.ed.gov for the online application and printable worksheet. Parents and students must apply for an online Personal Identification Number (PIN) in order to provide an electronic signature. Keep your PIN in a safe place for later use and do not share your PIN with anyone!

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDE

Master the Basics Where to Start Go online and take advantage of free scholarship searches such as www.fastweb.com for local and national awards.

Consult your school guidance counselor about private and corporate scholarships.

Search your community. There are many organizations, both religious and cultural, that may offer awards.

How to Prepare Get organized and keep the scholarships you are working on separate from those you have not started. Use a calendar to keep track of dates and deadlines. Create a folder for each scholarship application and materials.

Know your time frame to apply. Complete and send the easiest scholarships first. Then focus on the scholarships with earlier deadlines and ones that may require more time. Allow plenty of time when requesting letters of recommendation.

Submit your application Remember to check spelling and grammar.

Proofread your materials and have a teacher, parent or friend read over your application and essay if submitting online or by mail. They can provide feedback and catch mistakes.

What Do Judges Look For? Do you qualify? Every year, students waste time by applying for awards they aren’t eligible to win. If you don’t qualify, don’t apply!

Is your application presented well? Type your essay, place the application, essay and other contents in a large folder for mailing. Do not fold any of the materials.

Did you include all required documents? Make sure you include all required academic transcripts, references and letters of recommendation.

Did you answer all of the questions? Double-check that you haven’t forgotten any required information.

The Scholarship Essay Before you begin Develop a theme that fits the scholarship. Learn about the provider’s mission and goals. Include elements in your essay to complement the sponsor’s expectations. For example, if the provider is interested in community outreach, highlight ways you impact your community within your essay.

A few topic ideas

Personal achievements - Talk about specific interactions you may have had with others. Do you still keep in touch with anyone you’ve helped? How did you influence their lives? - How did your achievements reflect your values? Why are your achievements important to you? Did you do something that received high praise or recognition? - Personalize your experience. For example, what makes the volunteer and community service you’ve performed unique? What made you stand out?

Tip: Judges want to see how your achievements impact you personally!

38

Academic plans and possible major - Instead of saying, “Science is my favorite subject,” discuss a specific assignment or project that you worked on that sparked your interest. - Avoid saying that you selected a major or career path to “help people.” What specific actions can you take to improve the lives of others? Discuss how your values are relevant to what you will be studying in school

Tip: Don’t focus on the classes you hope to take in college. Focus on your degree and future goals and why they are important to you.

Social issues and current events - Think about current issues or events in the news that you feel strongly about. - Do you know a lot about a controversial topic? - Do you know of someone who is directly involved in an issue who might be able to provide insight?

Tip: Summarize the issue briefly. Share your perspective, offer constructive criticism and address all sides of the issue, not just your own.

Mentors, admirers and influences - Think about your friends and family, community and the things you’ve learned outside of the classroom. Pick specific people, incidents and learning experiences to write about that will let your personality come through. - Is there a person you aspire to be like within your chosen major or career path? Someone who encouraged you to succeed? Focus on specific qualities or actions that the person has inspired in you.

Tip: When writing about others, be sure to focus on how this person has inspired you and shaped your life.

TEN SCAM WARNING SIGNS

Knowing the warning signs can keep you from being a scholarship scam victim.

1. Fees: You shouldn’t have to pay to search for or apply for scholarships. Check out the free scholarship search at www.fastweb.com. 2. Credit card or bank account information needed: You should never have to give credit card or bank account information to award providers. 3. Scholarship guarantee: No one can guarantee that you’ll win a scholarship because no one can control scholarship judges’ decisions. Also, be wary of “high success rates” – they usually do not refer to actual award winners. 4. No work involved: You can’t avoid putting in time to fill out a scholarship application. 5. No contact information: Legitimate sponsors should provide contact information upon request. If the sponsor does not supply a valid e-mail address, phone number and mailing address (not a P.O. box) upon request, that could be the sign of a scam. 6. Unsolicited scholarships: If you are called to receive an award for which you never applied, be alert – it’s most likely a scam. 7. Pressure tactics: Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into applying for a scholarship, especially if the sponsor is asking for money up front. 8. Claims of “exclusive” scholarships: Sponsors don’t make their scholarships available through only one service. 9. Sponsor goes out of their way to sound “official”: Scammers sometimes use official-sounding words like “national,” “education,” or “federal” or they display an official-looking seal to fool you into thinking they are legit. Check with your school if you question a scholarship provider’s legitimacy. 10. Your questions aren’t answered directly: If you can’t get a straight answer from a sponsor regarding their application, what will be done with your information or other questions, proceed with caution.
