A Distributional Checklist of the Fishes of Kentucky
A Distributional Checklist of the Fishes of Kentucky BROOKS M. BURR Department of Zoology, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois 62901 ABSTRACT. —A compilation of records of fishes from Kentucky waters based on specimens deposited in museums, personal collecting, and accepted literature reports revealed that 229 species occur or did oc- cur in the state. A substantial amount of new distributional data is presented in the form of an annotated list including records of several species of fishes previously unreported from the state. Distributional statements in the checklist are based on individual spot maps completed for all Kentucky fishes. A list of five problematical species is included at the end of the checklist. INTRODUCTION The fish fauna of Kentucky is more diverse than that of any other in- land area of comparable size in North America except Tennessee and Alabama. Presently, 229 species are known to occur or to have occurred in Kentucky waters and only 10 or 11 are the result of introduction by man. A major factor contributing to the present completeness of our knowledge of the Kentucky fish fauna has been its rich history of ichthyological investigations going back to the time of one of North America's earliest ichthyologists, Constantine Samuel Rafinesque. Since Rafinesque's groundbreaking work on Ohio River valley fishes (1820) there have been four other reports on Kentucky fishes (Woolman 1892, Garman 1894, Evermann 1918, Clay 1975). Woolman's study is of im- mense historical value in documenting the distribution of many Ken- tucky fishes before most of the changes brought on by man took place. -

One of the best examples is Anna Mac Clarke, who made history in the mil- itary.This memorable young woman grew up in Lawrenceburg and graduated from Kentucky State College in 1941. Rejecting domestic work—the only job a black col- lege graduate could get in Lawrenceburg in those days—she packed up and moved to New York to work at a Girl Scout Camp. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, she recalled the words of her commencement speaker at Kentucky State a few months before. The great edu- cator Mary McCloud Bethune had told the graduates, “We must not fail America, and as Americans, we must insist that America not fail us.” Lt. Clarke at work: Haley Bowling as Anna Mac Clarke dur- Clarke took that statement to heart, both parts of it. -

Dreves Bulletin No. 120 August 2015 INVESTIGATION OF THE WALLEYE POPULATION IN THE ROCKCASTLE RIVER AND EVALUATION OF SUPPLEMENTAL STOCKING OF NATIVE STRAIN WALLEYE By David P. Dreves 2015 Partially funded by the Sport Fish Restoration Program F-40 ABSTRACT Widespread sampling of the Rockcastle River for walleye and subsequent genetic testing of 641 walleye using both mitochondrial DNA analysis and microsatellites analysis of nuclear DNA indicated that it is inhabited by a pure native southern strain of walleye and there is no evidence of northern strain genetic introgression. The native walleye population in the Rockcastle River remained reproductively isolated from northern strain walleye downstream in Lake Cumberland though there is not a physical barrier preventing upstream and downstream migration. Native walleye broodfish were collected from the Rockcastle River, spawned at Minor Clark Fish Hatchery to produce fingerling size (1.5 in) walleye for supplemental stocking from 2002 to 2007. The relatively low density population in the Rockcastle River was not enhanced by supplemental stocking of native walleye fingerlings. However, during stocking years, walleye year classes were composed almost entirely of stocked fish. At the cessation of stocking there was very low or no walleye recruitment for several years. A total of 483 native walleye were PIT tagged with excellent tag retention of 98.3%. There were 157 total recaptures representing 121 different walleye individuals. 1 INTRODUCTION Walleye (Sander vitreus) are a large, piscivorous, fish of the Percid Family. -

THE DISTRIBUTION AND STATUS OF NATIVE WALLEYE (SANDER VITREUS) STOCKS IN WEST VIRGINIA (45 pp.) Director of Thesis: Matthew M. White Walleye (Sander vitreus) is a heavily managed fishery, the genetic integrity of which has been affected by introductions of nonnative stocks via hatchery supplementation. DNA analysis on walleye has revealed highly divergent populations of walleye in the Ohio and New rivers. The focus of this project is to identify the distribution and assess the introgression of native walleye populations in West Virginia. PCR-RFLP analysis of mtDNA reveals native walleye are distributed throughout West Virginia, with higher frequencies in the Kanawha/New River system. Analysis of microsatellite DNA markers suggests native walleye stocks within the Ohio and Monongahela Rivers have introgressed with introduced walleye populations. Native walleye stocks in the Kanawha and New Rivers are relatively uninfluenced. The stocks in the Kanawha/New River system should be used for future hatchery supplementation and restoration of a native population of walleye in West Virginia. -
