Brazil was at the front of this progression and by the early 2000’s, scholars believed Brazil was poised to emerge as Latin America’s gay rights champion. Despite some advancements, the image of Brazil as a gay rights champion is nebulous. The Brazilian Congress has failed in passing federal legislation protecting sexual minorities from violence and discrimination and this thesis seeks to answer why. Qualitative interviews were conducted with LGBT activists, political aides, politicians and Evangelical Pastors. Ultimately this thesis argues that Brazil does not have LGBT anti- discrimination policy because of two factors: 1) a weakening LGBT social movement and 2) a strong countermovement to LGBT rights. iii Acknowledgements Thanks is offered to numerous people upon the completion of this thesis. Family Feuds: Gender, Nationalism and the Family1 Anne McClintock All nationalismsare gendered,all are invented,snd all are dangerous- dangerous,not in EricHobsbawm's sense as havingto be opposed,but in the sense of representing relations to political power and to the technologiesof violence.Nationalism, as ErnestGellner notes, invents nationswhere they donot exist, andmost modern nations, despite their appeal to an august and immemorialpast, are of recent invention (Gellner,1964). Benedict Anderson warns, however, that Gellnertends to assimilate 'invention'to 'falsity' rather than to 'imagining'and 'creation'.Anderson, by contrast,views nationsas 'imaginedcommuni- ties' in the sense that they are systems of cultural representation wherebypeople come to imagine a shared experienceof identification with an extendedcommunity (Anderson, 1991: 6). As such, nations are not simply phantasmagoriaof the mind, but are historicaland insti- tutional practices through which social differenceis invented and performed.Nationalism becomes, as a result, radicallyconstitutive of people'sidentities, throughsocial contests that are frequentlyviolent and always gendered.But if the invented nature of nationalismhas found wide theoreticalcurrency, explorations of the genderingof the nationalimaginary have been conspicuouslypaltry. Interpretations of the Chinese May Fourth era often reduce the period to one of wholesale westernization and cultural self- repudiation. Euro-American notions of the self often reify ideologies of individuality, individualism, rationalism, evolution, and a “self-versus-society” dichotomy, viewing such positions as universal and applicable for judging decolonizing others. To interrogate this assumption, I examine the writing of Lu Xun and Xiao Hong, two May Fourth writers whose fictional characters present innovative, integrated, heterogeneous selves that transcend Western ii critical models. This “full spectrum of selves” sustains contradicting pulls of identity—the mental (the rational, the individual), the bodily (the survivalist, the affective), the cerebral (the moral), the social (the relational, the organismic), as well as the spiritual and the cosmic. -

Feminism, Nationalism, and War: The ‘Yugoslav Case’ in Feminist Texts By Jelena Batinic Introduction In the last decade, what was known as Yugoslavia disintegrated through a series of wars.1 These wars are known worldwide for their brutality and for the tragic ‘privilege’ of imposing the notion of ‘ethnic cleansing’ to international political discourse. In the Western media, they were often represented as just another phase in everlasting, ancient - even tribal - ethnic tensions, and this representation often merged with an Orientalist discourse of the Balkans.2 The situation in the former Yugoslavia also became central to numerous feminist texts. Different ideological, cultural, and theoretical assumptions, as well as dependence on different sources, influenced the emergence of different feminist approaches and analyses, and initiated debates and divisions among both local and Western feminists. -

How are children socialized into gender/sex binaries? How do dominant social and cultural formations actually produce men and women? How is gender/sex related to sexuality? What is it that we are attracted to in another person? Body frames? Masculinity/femininity? Having a penis or a vagina/vulva? How does gender/sex depend on other categories such as race/ethnicity, nationality, class, religion, and ability? How do interlocking systems of oppression (e.g. sexism, racism, classism, xenophobia, ableism) influence people’s lives? In this class, we will learn to make evidence-based arguments about gender and sex while situating lived experiences of women and sexual minorities in context, gain media literacy in examining examples from pop culture, understand the role of heteropatriarchal and racist ideologies and institutions in social inequity, and learn to think and write critically about gender in its social, cultural, historical and political context. LEARNING GOALS § Explain how dominant social and cultural formations of gender actually produce women and men, girls and boys. § Identify interlocking systems of oppression (i.e. heteropatriarchy, transphobia, racism, classism, xenophobia, ableism) and analyze the relationship of gender other categories (i.e. race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, class, sexuality). -

Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy Rethinking Women of Color Organizing Andrea Smith Scenario #1 A group of women of color come together to organize. An argu- ment ensues about whether or not Arab women should be included. Some argue that Arab women are "white" since they have been classified as such in the US census. Another argument erupts over whether or not Latinas qualify as "women of color," since some may be classified as "white" in their Latin American countries of origin and/or "pass" as white in the United States. Scenario #2 In a discussion on racism, some people argue that Native peoples suffer from less racism than other people of color because they gen- erally do not reside in segregated neighborhoods within the United States. In addition, some argue that since tribes now have gaming, Native peoples are no longer "oppressed." Scenario #3 A multiracial campaign develops involving diverse conpunities of color in which some participants charge that we must stop the blacklwhite binary, and end Black hegemony over people of color politics to develop a more "multicultural" framework. However, this campaign continues to rely on strategies and cultural motifs developed by the Black Civil Rights struggle in the United States. These incidents, which happen quite frequently in "women of color" or "pee;' of color" political organizing struggles, are often explained as a consequenii. "oppression olympics." That is to say, one problem we have is that we are too b::- fighting over who is more oppressed. In this essay, I want to argue that thescir- dents are not so much the result of "oppression olympics" but are more abour t-, we have inadequately framed "women of color" or "people of color" politics. -

This course will center on considerations (including critiques) of LGBTQ+ social movement strategies. In that regard, it is a course designed to answer the question of how LGBTQ+ social movement work is done (and, to some degree, undone). While there is a range of literatures taking up this question, this seminar is anchored especially in sociological LGBTQ+ social movement research, LGBTQ+ social movement history, and interdisciplinary LGBTQ+ and Sexuality Studies. One aim of the course is to consider recent research engaging core concepts arising from Queer Studies, Queer of Color critique, Intersex studies, Transgender studies and more. A related goal is to engage empirical research while being mindful of critiques of empiricism, especially in relation to LGBTQ+ lives and activisms. As well the course is designed with a certain wariness of embedded patterns erasure and epistemic violence attached to academic incorporation of activist work and so is structured to attend to concepts relevant to LGBTQ + activists and attentive to activist voices and materials. The syllabus for this course should not be read as a comprehensive overview of a field, for there is a good deal of important material left out. -

Patriotically Queer: LGBTQ Activist Strategies in Belgrade By William Gregory Alexander (Alex) Cooper Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Critical Gender Studies Supervisor: Elissa Helms Second Reader: Nicole Butterfield CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2015 Abstract: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights activists in Serbia must contend with strong anti-LGBTQ attitudes and, at times, episodes of violence. Many Serbians who hold anti-LGBTQ attitudes view non-heteronormative behavior wrong, backward, immoral, etc. The people who work in the field of LGBTQ activism must navigate through this anti-LGBTQ environment to accomplish their stated goals and objectives. Faced with nationalist opposition that ignores the legitimacy of LGBTQ rights, these activists tend to reach out to international actors for assistance. In doing so, activists may alienate the local populations. Activists must then negotiate between the domestic and the international. This thesis serves to examine LGBTQ activism and to understand the strategies that activists implement to achieve these goals and continue their work. Based on over five months of ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with LGBTQ activists, I argue that activists take pragmatic approaches to their activism that may be critiqued as homonormative or even supported by homonationalist stances from international actors. My research draws from draws from literature on gender and nationalism, NGO-ization, homonormativity, homonationalism, and social movement theory in order to understand these complexities within these decisions. I claim that activists work with the resources available to them, and they position themselves in ways that they believe are most productive.
