Burial ceremony Hosni Mubarak’s court appearance stuns Egyptians

CAIRO: After months of rumours that Egypt ex-president Hosni Mubarak was at death’s door, footage of the toppled leader looking strong and defiant in court stunned many who had cared little about his fate. The 84-year-old Mubarak who is being held at a military hospi- tal in Cairo, has been treated for a heart condition, fractured ribs, fluid in the lungs, depression and high blood pressure, according to lawyers and official accounts. Interior Minister Abdikarin Hussein Guled said all the attackers were killed in the courthouse raid. “Six detonated themselves, and three were shot dead by security forces,” he told reporters, adding that the government had regained control of the situation. YANGON: Myanmar’s reformist president called for multi-faith harmony in a national address to mark the country’s New Year celebrations yesterday, fol- lowing recent anti-Muslim unrest that has scarred communities. Thein Sein dedicated his speech to promoting religious unity as the nation remains tense after a wave of rioting last month that left 43 dead, thousands displaced and saw homes and mosques destroyed. “Our society has overcome many difficulties and chal- lenges together so we can emerge as a society in which multiple races and religions coexist harmoniously, while still preserving our own customs and traditions,” he said in a televised speech. He said the country’s efforts at democratisation had been hampered by “black spots such as disunity, conflict and instability”. REUTERS Dubai housing stock to bounce back DUBAI: Another 40,000 new homes will enter Dubai’s property market over the next two years as developers revive projects stalled after the collapse of the emir- ate’s real estate market, a report said yesterday. The new properties to be built between 2013 and 2015 will represent 11 percent of the current stock of 357,000 units, consultants Jones Lang LaSalle said in a report on Dubai’s real estate market for the first quarter of 2013. It said that a total of 28,000 dwellings are expected to be completed in 2013. Around 2,200 residential units, mostly apartments, have already been handed over in the first quarter of the year, which include the Spirit Tower in Dubai Sports City, Lakeside Tower in JLT, Bay Central in Dubai Marina as well as the Al Furjan Villas by developer Nakheel. Dubai developers are reviving building plans after nearly three years of inactivity, encouraged by a gradual recovery in the emirate’s real estate after a historic col- lapse of homes prices by over 50 percent from its peak in 2008. The REIDIN general residential sale index showed the villa sale price index and the apartment sale price index increased by 17 percent and 18 percent year-on- year respectively, the report said. However, concerns have been raised on whether Dubai is again attracting speculators who are aiming to make their fortunes by buying apartments and villas for cash and then selling them within weeks or days, repeating mistakes of the past. “An initial glance might suggest that many of the condi- tions that led to the unsustainable growth in real estate prices in Dubai in 2006 and 2007 have returned,” Alan Robertson, the Chief Executive of Jones Lang LaSalle in the Middle East and North Africa said in the report. “The excesses of the last speculative boom will hope- fully be replaced by a period of slower but more sustained growth in demand and prices.” he added. Police forces had to brought in yesterday to control crowds after Emaar Properties, Dubai’s largest developer, offered 188 town- houses for sale in its new development called Mira. The three-bedroom homes, part of a previously announced Reem development, were being sold at a start- ing cost of just Dh988,888 ($269,300), Emaar said, much cheaper than the market cost for such a property. The queues of investors outside offices of major real estate developers recall Dubai’s boom days before 2008 when money poured in from around the world, creating a property bubble that eventually led to a historic crash. CAIRO: Egypt’s central bank sold $600m to banks in a special auction of foreign exchange yesterday to pay for wheat, meat, cooking oil and other essential imports to a country struggling with a currency crisis. The size of the auction — 15 times the amount the central bank has been selling at its regular currency auctions — showed the extent of pent up demand for dollars as Egypt struggles with an economic crisis two years after the ousting of Hosni Mubarak. The central bank has been rationing dollars since late December in a system of regular foreign currency auctions brought in to cope with the impact of a run on the pound. Foreign exchange dealers said the authorities would have to use more dollar reserves to guarantee food supplies. Food price inflation has stoked unrest in the past. “The effect will be temporary because the demand is a lot higher than this. They must do it again but it is not clear when that will be,” said a currency dealer. Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said yesterday that the government was looking for ways to stabilise prices of key goods and to ensure the flow of goods into the local market. He said that the unspecified measures were needed to stabilise prices in the coming period in the face of possible price hikes. The hard currency was sold at 6.87 pounds to the dol- lar — near the official rate. The pound is trading much weaker on the black market where most private sector importers are having to source their hard currency needs. The special auction follows Qatar’s pledge last week to buy $3bn in government bonds — a boost to foreign cur- rency reserves that had fallen to critically low levels below the $15bn needed to cover three months worth of imports. At the end of March, the reserves stood at $13.4bn. At official rates, the currency has lost a tenth of its value since the beginning of foreign exchange rationing. The cen- tral bank has been holding three auctions per week, selling $40m at each. Shortages of imported fuel are disrupting transport and leading to power cuts. Egypt, the world’s big- gest importer of wheat, has also cut back on international purchases this year in the hope of a bumper local harvest. Yesterday’s auction was held for banks with clients importing staple commodities such as wheat, cooking oil, tea, meat, fish, beans, butter, corn and baby milk, components for drugs and vaccines as well as spare parts, the central bank said.
