Once specific genetic differences were de- tected, ‘a posteriori’ searching for phenotypic characters has been undertaken to differentiate cryptic species and to formally describe and name them. The name D. petraeum (Monterosato, 1884) should be restricted to the species of this complex dis- tributed around the central Mediterranean (type locality in Sicily). In the present work this taxon is redescribed under the oldest valid name D. cristatum (Biondi, 1857), and a new species belonging to this complex is described, distributed in the western Mediterranean. These descriptions are based on a comparative study focusing on the protoconch, teleoconch, and external and internal anatomy. Morphologically, the two species can be only distinguished on the basis of non-easily visible anatomical features, and by differences in protoconch size and sculpture.

Although this gorgonian is among the largest Atlantic-Mediterranean invertebrates, its biology remains virtually unknown. The studied population, established within an area of regulated fishing, was in unusually shallow waters (12−32 m). Density averaged 0.5 colonies m−2 (max 5 m−2); colony volume averaged 48 ml (max 511 ml), height averaged 76 cm (max 167 cm), and number of branches averaged 16 (max 72). Allometric growth revealed increasing branching and thickening once colonies reached approxi- mately 60 cm in height. Size distribution suggested moderate to low recruitment. Three geo- graphic zones of fishing pressure (A−C) were semi-quantitatively identified, based on the activity of a small-scale fishing fleet: ‘A’ had the highest level of fishing pressure (frequent gillnetting, trolling lines, and occasional trawling); ‘B’ had the lowest level (occasional gillnetting and fishing lines), and ‘C’ an intermediate level. Most fishing gear was tangled in the gorgonians in zones A and C.

Three levels of entanglement are foregrounded here: the article looks simultaneously at punitive flows stemming from the colonies and from the metropole; it brings together the study of penal transportation, administrative deportation, and military deportation; and it discusses the relationship between punitive relocations and imprisonment. As part of this special issue foregrounding “perspectives from the colonies”, I start with an analysis of the punitive flows that stemmed from the overseas provinces. I then address punishment in the metropole through the colonial lens, before highlighting the entanglements of penal transportation and deportation in the nineteenth-century Spanish Empire as a whole. On 28 November 1896 two ships left the port of Havana in the midst of the cries, waved handkerchiefs, and threatening screams of the crowd on the dockside. More than one hundred men, chained in pairs, were being brought to the steamship Ciudad de Cadiz for deportation to various destinations across the Spanish Empire. They included two dozen “unfaithful” (infidentes) individuals allegedly involved in the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), seventy-four cattle rustlers (cuatreros), and a considerable number of ñañigos, or members of the Abakuá mutual aid society.

  • Parsley Island: an Over-Seasoned Dispute
    Parsley Island and the intervention of the United States Abstract On 11 July 2002 a dozen Moroccan armed police occupied Parsley Island, a rocky outcrop off the north Moroccan coast. Five days later Spanish armed forces intervened to „liberate‟ the island and repatriated the Moroccans. On 20 July, following the intervention of the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, the State Department drew up an agreement acceptable to both sides and Spain withdrew. This article examines why Morocco occupied the island, why Spain used force in reply and why the US became involved. As with many territorial disputes, the occupation and the responses to it were symptomatic of more deep-seated grievances between the disputants, while the involvement of the Bush Administration was inspired by its own self-interest in the aftermath of 9/11. Around midday on Thursday 11 July 2002 some fishermen from the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta reported to the Civil Guard headquarters there that about a dozen Moroccan armed police had occupied Parsley Island (“la Isla Perejil” in Spanish but known in Morocco as “Laila” or “Taura” in the Rif dialect), a rocky outcrop about 200 metres off the north Moroccan coast.1 The Moroccans were backed up by a small company of the Royal Armed Forces, which was stationed in an abandoned artillery battery at Punta Leona on the mainland. Later that day an announcement was issued from Rabat claiming that the island was Moroccan and that they had no intention of leaving.2 The Spanish Foreign Minister, Ana Palacio, who had only been appointed two days earlier, made immediate contact with her Moroccan counterpart, Mohamed Benaissa.
