THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

Monaghan’s physical landscape: exploiting its natural resources SUSAN HEGARTY Introduction When the author of the Irish Times article in 1863 called Monaghan the ‘Cornwall of Erin’, he may have somewhat embellished reality.1 Indeed, this idea of an industrialised Monaghan may have been merely aspirational, as the landowners of Monaghan began to engage in exploitation of their mineral resources in the nineteenth century. However, it is true to say that the physical landscape of any area is the foundation for any future development – cultural and social. The raw materials of an area shape the historical experience of its economy and society. Therefore, in this chapter we will examine the evolution of the physical landscape of Monaghan, its endowment of raw materials, and how these have been exploited over the years. Even a cursory glance at the basic physical geography of Monaghan (fig. 1) will suffice to note that the county can be broken up into four areas. The northwestern corner of the county contains its highest point, around the Slieve Beagh uplands. To the east and south of this, is located a lowland area composed of limestone, with average heights of 70 metres above sea level. In the centre of the county, south of Monaghan town, the land rises to an average of 160 metres above sea level. Then further south around Carrickmacross, the land falls again, averaging 60 metres above sea level. All of these changes in landscape and elevation are due to the underlying rock types (fig. 2). Glaciation has also had a significant impact on the landscape of Monaghan, with drumlins being one of its most characteristic features.

The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the impact of partition on the border counties of Cavan and Monaghan in the period 1914 to 1926. Partition had a profound impact on this region in political, economic and social terms. People from all walks of life in the region were adversely affected by the partition of Ireland which was brought about by the Government of Ireland Act of December 1920. The period 1914-1920 which witnessed the imposition of partition was extremely fraught in Cavan and Monaghan as tensions mounted between nationalists and unionists over the regions future. This work examines these tensions and shows how sectarian animosities built up in the region.

In total, over 1,350 structures were recorded. The Inventory should not be regarded as exhaustive and, over time, other buildings and structures of merit may come to light. The purpose of this introduction is to explore the social and historical context of the buildings and structures and to facilitate a greater appreciation of the architectural heritage of County Monaghan. The NIAH survey of the architectural heritage of County Monaghan can be accessed on the internet at: www.buildingsofireland.ie MAP OF COUNTY MONAGHAN From Samuel Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, published London, 1837. 3 JC946 NIAH_Monaghan Book(AW)_COUNTY MONAGHAN 18/06/2013 17:21 Page 4 AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE of COUNTY MONAGHAN Introduction Monaghan, an inland county in south Ulster, lies across the great drumlin belt formed by the movement and melting of a retreating ice sheet some 15,000 years ago. This process deposited mounds of boulder clay, and dense poorly draining soil in a great tract between Donegal Bay and Strangford Lough. This concentration of small hills, frequently interspersed with lakes, gives a pleasing and ever changing character to the local topography.

THEfirst edition of this Memoir was issued in 1885, and was prepared by Mr. R. J. Cruise, with palaeontological notes by Mr. W. H. Baily. Advantage has been taken of the demand for a new edition to considerably amplify the subject matter, particularly as regards the glacial features, the minerals, and the relation of the soils to agriculture. A considerable mass of gabbro, first brought to the notice of the Survey by Mr. R. Clark, and used for road-metal and building, has been mapped and described. The assistance of Dr. G. W. Lee in naming a number of Carboniferous fossils is gratefully acknowledged. The country described is typical of the Silurian lands that stretch from near Longford to the coast of Down and into the Southern Uplands of Scotland.

HOEY, THE COURTHOUSE, CARRICKMACROSS, CO. MONAGEIAN. In 1922,when the Civil War broke out, in which I took no part, I conceived the idea of making notes of my own experiences in the War of Independence. In those notes made by me in 1922, I also included incidents in which I did not participate, but of which I had most reliable information of what had taken place from actual participants.

  • The Mcmahons of Trohanny
The McMahons of Trohanny and Surrounding Townlands ◆ Patrick McMahon and Eugene McMahon We would like to acknowledge the help given to us in compiling this family history. Many people have, directly or indirectly, played important roles in the work that has culminated in this book. Our thanks go to the Catholic Parish of Moynalty, the National Library of Ireland and to Carmel Rice, of Meath Heritage & Genealogy Centre, who helped to kick-start this project. Access to the Mormon archives was provided courtesy of the Family History Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. Thanks also for information, illustrations and early McMahon genealogy charts to the mcmahonsofmonaghan.org website. In particular, we would like to single out our Uncles Jim and Paddy of Maio; Cousins, Joseph and Peter of Rathbawn, Paddy of Moynalty, Rose and Mary of Kells. Thanks also go to Mary Murchan of Moynalty who acquainted us with unrelated McMahons in the locality. Finally, our thanks go to Paul Claffey for his dedicated work on the design and layout of this book. Cover picture shows the former McMahon Farmhouse in Trohanny lovingly restored 2000-2005 by its owners, Joe Bergin (stonemason from Balbriggan, County Dublin) and his wife, Aine McGarry. We are grateful to Aine for the use of the photograph reproduced on the covers of this book. © Patrick McMahon and Eugene McMahon Written and published by Patrick McMahon and Eugene McMahon Gorey Dundas Co.
