Coach Vance Law

Coach Vance Law loged his 600th game at the BYU helm last month. Law is in his 11th season as head coach at BYU. He played 14 years of pro ball, including 11 years in the majors with six different teams. In 2001 he was named Coach of the Year in the Mountain West Conference. The 53-year-old coach entered this season with a 317-263-2 (.546) record. He is assisted by Ryan Roberts, in his eighth year at BYU. Pitching coach Bobby Applegate is in his seventh year with BYU, having last coached at the Air Force Academy.

Andrew Law and Stephen Wells both suffered hamstring injuries when

BYU played at UC Davis. Law missed the first trip to Texas and Wells returned to play in the final contest when he hit a two-run homer to win

the game at UT Arlington.

Boyd’s World collegiate baseball rankings had BYU ranked with the 31st toughest schedule in the nation. Others on BYU’s schedule were ranked on that strength of schedule index: Washington State (18), San Francisco (23), Arizona State (30) and TCU (53). Pingbaseball has BYU at No.

17 on schedule difficulty, while Seattle is No. 1, followed by San Diego

State (24) and New Mexico (50)

Sophomore pitcher David Parry recorded a 4.0 grade point average last semester. The accounting major made the Dean’s List. Another of the top GPAs on the team is by pitcher Shawn Hardesty, who has a job teaching Portuguese at the nearby Missionary Training Center.

Home Season

BYU drew 19,474 fans in it’s 21-game home schedule last season for an average of 927 with a 8-13 record. The Cougars have a 128-58 (.688) record at Larry H. Miller Field which seats 2,204 fans in its 10th season since it was built. In the previous nine years BYU has drawn 218,981 fans for an average of 1,177 and 142,248 at night for an average of 1,452. This season BYU has drew 18,650 fans at home (1,036 avg.), but a couple of the 18 games were not paid admission. The crowd of 3,081 against Utah this season was the fourth-largest in school history and the second-largest at Miller Park.

BYU recorded the fourth triple play in school history and the third in MWC history (AFA and TCU) with a 5-4-3 (Parker-Andrew Law-Ko) triple play in the 12-2 game vs. New Mexico last season.

Zimbabwe

Coach Vance Law, his son Andrew, Wes Guenther, David Parry and Stephen Wells assisted others in the community in packing clothing and supplies in crates which arrived in January to assist those in need in Zimbabwe. Coach Law became aware of this project through his son Adam, who was on last year’s team, and is now serving a mission there.

Sophomore Alex Wolfe homered the first four home games last month,

with multiple RBI in each of those games. He had the game-winning RBI with a two-run double in BYU’s 16-4 romp over Washington--in that game he doubled and hit a two-run homer for four RBI in that 13-

run second inning. In game one vs. Washington as a first baseman, he had a diving rollover assist on the first batter in the fifth inning to complete the putout to the pitcher. He was on the end of five double plays

in game two vs. Washington. He had a slugging average of 1.556 for the three-game series.

He was hurt last season in his 11th game and had played 11 games this season with very similar statistics until this week’s threegame series. He raised his batting average from .317 to .340. He played

first base in games one and two and third base in game three. was injured

in his 11th game last year. Through 11 games, Wolfe was batting .317 compared to .310 last year and had nine bases on balls compared to four

last season with five fewer runs. Other than those numbers his statistics

were nearly identical.
