15 June 2020 [R.A.S.C. COMPANY ESTABLISHMENT 1944 - 1945] The Royal Army Service Corps The Royal Army Service Corps (R.A.S.C.) was the branch of the British Army responsible for the distribution of supplies to units in the field. Likewise, in the Indian Army, the Royal Indian Army Service Corps (R.I.A.S.C.) performed the same function. Both corps had the additional responsibility of transporting supplies as far as the front line, where individual units took over responsibility. The corps were also responsible for the administration and maintenance of barracks and quarters. The R.A.S.C. and R.I.A.S.C. did not issue or maintain weapons, military equipment, or ammunition as this was the responsibility of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. However, the R.A.S.C. and R.I.A.S.C. did transport ammunition from Base Ordnance Depots to Forward Ammunition Points. It was also the task of the two corps to transport and distribute Petrol, Oil and Lubricants, often known simply as ‘POL’. Just as important, the R.A.S.C. and R.I.A.S.C. were responsible for supplying the food and water to keep the army personnel and animals fed and watered. The corps provided Field Butchery, Field Bakery and Cattle Conducting Sections. The two corps used vehicles, mules, and aircraft to keep the supplies moving. Railway and shipping transportation were the responsibility of the Royal Engineer Movements and Transportation Branch. In the 1700’s, when the British Army developed into a national army as we know it today, transport was provided by civilian contractors. -

ABSTRACT Comics are an integral aspect of America's development and culture. The comics have chronicled historical milestones, determined fashion and shaped the way society viewed events and issues. They also offered entertainment and escape. The comics were particularly effective in providing heroes for Americans of all ages. One of those heroes -- or more accurately, superheroes -- is the Batman. A crime-fighting, masked avenger, the Batman was one of few comic characters that survived more than a half-century of changes in the country. Unlike his counterpart and rival -- Superman -- the Batman's popularity has been attributed to his embodiment of human qualities. Thus, as a hero, the Batman says something about the culture for which he is an ideal. The character's longevity and the alterations he endured offer a glimpse into the society that invoked the transformations. -

This consisted of a peaked cap, jacket with patch pockets, and breeches with puttees (leather leggings for officers), ankle boots, and spurs for mounted men. Dismounted men had no spurs and wore trousers instead of breeches. A special Army Order dated 5 August 1914 ordered the wearing of service dress by all ranks for all purposes, with the exception of the Household Cavaby and Foot Guards in London, and from that date Full Dress became virtually obsolete. A spare pair of boots, spare suit of service dress (excluding the cap) and spare set of underwear for each man was stored in his kitbag and left at the base in the care of the company, squadron or battery storeman. For officers these items were packed in a leather valise carried in the transport vehicles with the divisional train. The soldier also had with him a further spare pair of socks and a knitted woollen headdress known as a 'cap, comforter', and a greatcoat. For dismounted men this was normally carried in the pack: for mounted men, rolled behind the saddle. Great emphasis was placed in the importance of clothing, especially boots, being properly fitted. The Clothing Regulations contained detailed instructions for measuring and fitting men with clothing, especially recruits whose clothes were ordered to be fitted with an allowance for future growth. -

SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns. "MAKE INDIANS F DUR WHITE MEN": BRITISH SOLDIERS AND INDIAN WARRIORS FROM BRADDDCK'S TO FORBES'S CAMPAIGNS, 1755-1758 David L. Preston The Citadel rnMay of 1757, fivemiles outside of Fort Loudoun in south-central Pennsylvania, a lone frontier settler was scouring the woods in search of his stray horses. Fort Loudoun was situated near a gap in the Kittatinny Mountain ridge to defend the Pennsylvania frontiers against combined French and Indian war parties from the Ohio country. Instead of horses, this frontiersman unluckily stumbled upon an Indian war party and immediately fled back to the fort and notified the Pennsylvania forces, perhaps running at a slightly faster gait than his lost horses. The fort commanders men quickly sent out a war party of their own numbering sixty who soon discovered the Indians holed up in a house at Black's Mill. The officers "thought it expedient to postpone the Attack until the Break of Day" and during the night they divided their force into three columns and stealthily surrounded the Indian encampment. FORMING a density the shape of an enormous BAT-LIKE SYMBOL. More BATS mass, swamping the symbol, DARKENING the screen to- BLACK. Distant children’s LAUGHTER which comes closer as- SUNLIGHT flickers through black. Sunlight through trees running through a SUMMER GARDEN. A BOY. Chasing a GIRL. The Boy reaches a Victorian GREENHOUSE. Stands in the doorway catching his breath. This is Bruce Wayne, aged 8, and we are- 1 EXT. GARDENS, WAYNE MANOR -- DAY 1 YOUNG BRUCE peers down rows of plants on long trestle tables. YOUNG BRUCE Rachel? No response. Sunlight streams through wrought iron and glass. Young Bruce advances, cautious. He is GRABBED from behind and pulled under a table by a young girl, aged 10. This is RACHEL. She puts her hand over Young Bruce’s mouth. FEMALE VOICE (O.S.) Rachel?! Master Bruce?! A woman STRIDES past the windows: MRS.DODSON, Rachel’s mother, housekeeper of Wayne Manor. YOUNG BRUCE (whispering) What’re you doing?! RACHEL (matter-of-fact) Kidnapping you. They” pay a lot for precious Brucie. Young Bruce stares, wide-eyed. She SMILES. He relaxes. Young Bruce BOLTS out from under the trestle table - SPRINTS for the back door. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY April 1, 2014 2 With many thanks to Patricia Montalbano (project advisor), Rachel Neiwart Emily West and Sharon Doherty for their continuous and invaluable interest, assistance, and patience with the project. 3 Introduction When presented with the simple silhouette of a stylized bat inside a yellow oval, people the world over are able to recognize this emblem and, at the very least, name its wearer. Even as the logo is altered with time, the yellow backdrop traded for a grey one, the awareness persists. Yet even as people recognize Batman’s logo, one person’s impression of the superhero does not always align with another’s: a cheerful, law-abiding Batman who orders orange juice instead of alcohol at bars is Batman as he appeared in the 1960s, and a brooding hero wreathed in darkness and prone to conflicted inner monologues is the Batman of the 1980s.
