The steep valley sides mean that soils are thin, with limited water storage capacity when heavy rain comes. The parent material is old, hard sandstone with limited permeability. The rivers here are naturally ‘flashy’. Surrounding vegetation includes agricultural land with limited interception storage, although there is some forestry along the riverbanks. (So conditions would have been even worse, without these patches of woodland!) The rain coincided with high tide in the bay.

    National Hydrology Seminar 2005 Brian Golding METEOROLOGY OF THE BOSCASTLE FLOOD Brian Golding, Head of Forecasting Research, Met Office, FitzRoy Road, Exeter,EX1 3PB, United Kingdom INTRODUCTION On the afternoon of 16 th August 2002 the village of Boscastle on the north coast of Cornwall was severely damaged by flooding. A substantial number of people were helped to safety by emergency services, though thankfully and perhaps remarkably, given the severity and suddenness of the event, there was no loss of human life. This paper presents an analysis of the meteorological conditions leading to the event. Evidence will be presented on the soil conditions prior to the event, the meteorological conditions that generated the storms, the temporal and spatial characteristics of the rain and the small-scale mechanisms which focussed extreme conditions in the Boscastle area. The rarity of the event is then examined in the light of previous records. CLIMATOLOGY OF RAINFALL IN NORTH-WEST CORNWALL Rainfall in southwest England arises predominantly from Atlantic depressions in winter and from thunderstorms in summer. The moisture content of the air is an important factor determining rainfall, and the sea temperature, which reaches its maximum in late summer, largely controls this. The rainfall distribution is also enhanced where air is forced to ascend hills. Most coastal areas of Cornwall and Devon have annual rainfall totals of 900-1000 mm, but up to double this amount falls on the uplands of Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and Exmoor. These figures can be compared to the driest parts of eastern England, which receive 500mm and over 4000 mm in the western Scottish mountains.

    Cornwall Council Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment ANNEX 5 – Chronology of Major Flood Events in Cornwall June 2011 1800 – 1899 A storm caused coastal flooding affecting a number of communities along the south coast on 19-20 January 1817. Polperro harbour was destroyed by this storm and Looe was badly damaged. Truro suffered from numerous flooding events during the 1800s (1811, 1815, 1818, 1838, 1841, 1844, 1846, 1848 (twice), 1869, 1875, 1880, 1882 (twice), 1885, 1894 and 1899). These were usually associated with high river flows coinciding with high tides. Known as the Great Flood of 16 July 1847, due to an intense rainstorm event on Davidstow Moor water collected in the valley and forced a passage of water down the Camel and Inney. Bodmin - Dunmere Valley and the whole area below Dunmere Hill was flooded by the River Camel. Dunmere Bridge was washed away as was the new 40 feet (12 m) high railway bridge. At St. Breward, bridges from Gam Bridge to Dunmere were washed away by a wall of water 12 to 18 feet (3.5-5.5 m) above normal along the River Camel. The devastating floods that swept down from Davidstow Moor washed away all but two of the bridges along the River Camel - Wadebridge and Helland being the only survivors. Serious flooding occurred in Par and St Blazey in November 1852. November 1875 saw heavy rain resulting in serious flooding in Bude, Camelford, Polmorla, Hayle, St Just, Penzance and Truro. Extreme rainfall in October 1880 resulted in serious flooding in both Bodmin and Truro. High tides at the end of September and early October 1882 resulted in flooding in Boscastle, Truro, Wadebridge and Padstow.

    YHA (England and Wales) Youth Hostel Profile compiled by the Association’s volunteer archivist, John Martin, rev2020-01-01 Boscastle Youth Hostel 1962 to present Palace Stables, Boscastle, Cornwall PL35 OHD Historic County: Cornwall YHA Regions: South-West, South GR: SX 097913 In the small river-cleft village of Boscastle on the wild and beautiful North Cornwall coast, in the early 1960s, a rugged old stone quayside building called Palace Stables was lying near- derelict. At the time it was usually described as stables with a hayloft; Boscastle harbour had been a busy place, shipping out local agricultural produce, slate and china clay, while many horses would be needed to haul heavy imports up the steep hills out of the village. Some historians have disputed the stables description however; they state that the building was a Pilchard Palace, a common term locally for a fish processing plant; it was also used for boat storage, and later, as a potato loft. Perhaps it was all of these things. The breakwater had been more than half destroyed in 1941 by a rogue mine drifting into the harbour and exploding. By the mid-20th century sea trade was waning and the harbour was run down. Charles Allen was Regional Secretary of the YHA Devon and Cornwall Regional Group from 1933 until 1965. During this seminal period for the organisation, it was he who sought to establish new hostels through diligent search, enquiry, a great many days travelling around attending meetings and not a few flukes: he was D&C’s ‘fixer’. An invaluable document describing these processes has recently been added to the YHA Archive: his YHA Memoirs of 1977.
