L’histoire du blues Exemple-type : Memphis Jug Band, Sugar pudding (Take your fingers off it), 1928 Ou On the Road again Groupe parfaitement représentatif de ce qu’est le blues : Naissance dans ce qu’on appelle le Delta. Esprit du blues apparaît au 18ème dans les plantations de coton. Maîtres blancs entreprennent l’évangélisation des esclaves ® leur permettent d’assister aux offices religieux ® Ecoutent des cantiques blancs qu’ils revisitent & transforment avec des rythmes africains ð Negro spirituals. Ex. Swing low sweet chariot c. 1865 Enregistrement : Fisk Jubilee Singers, 1909 Abolition de l’esclavage, 4 avril 1863 ® Les esclaves deviennent un sous-prolétariat agricole. Des chanteurs itinérants passent dans les villages pour les distraire : chantent des ballades du folklore irlandais, au violon + banjo. 1880 : nelles lois ségrégationnistes du Sud = interdiction de tout droit politique et civique aux Noirs. ® Nelle coloration des chants : le blues devient plus agressif & les negro spirituals demandent l’intervention de r. ® Les Noirs quittent le Sud : ± 2 millions (entre 1865 et 1914) montent vers le Nord & les cités industrialisées. 1ère étape : Memphis, à la frontière du Tennessee et du Mississippi. Cette population se concentre le long du Mississippi, dans le quartier populaire de Beale Street. ð C’est à Memphis que le Blues va se façonner et s’organiser. Histoire du blues moderne : — Beaucoup d’historiens considèrent Charlie Patton comme le père fondateur du Blues (ce qu’on appelle le Delta Blues) 1er à enregistrer un disque en 1929 for Paramount Fils d’un propriétaire de plantation (hors norme) qui choisit de devenir prédicateur ® rencontre des musiciens qui vont l’initier au blues dans le delta. — Musicien le plus emblématique de la Blues Music : Robert Johnson Petit-fils d’esclaves 10 frères et sœurs (d’un 1er lit) ; sa mère trouve un nel homme en la personne de Noah Johnson et Robert naît en 1911. Vie d’enfant ballotté entre son père et sa mère (qui retourne chez son 1er mari) ® quitte la maison familiale très tôt. Rencontre le monde de la musique (dont Patton) et du whisky. Caractéristiques de sa musique : Harmonica et guitare Accords sophistiqués Johnson joue comme 2 guitaristes à la fois : sa main gauche assure en même temps la ligne de basse et la mélodie. Cf. Jugement d’Eric Clapton : « Robert Johnson est pour moi le plus important blues man qui ait jamais vécu » ® Reprend le titre créé par Johnson, Sweet Home Chicago en 2004 ® le 21 février 2012, le président Obama accueille à la Maison Blanche un concert : 3rouge, blanc & blues », célébration du blues. Obama (très attaché à la ville de ses débuts) évoque les origines du blues dans le Sud et ajoute : « la musique a émigré vers le nord – du delta du Mississippi à Memphis, puis à ma ville, Chicago ». Buddy Guy et son orchestre, BB King (+ Mick Jagger) interprètent cette chanson. La réputation du Blues devient très rapidement sulfureuse : Liens supposés avec le diable (Cross roads) Alcool Bagarres & sexe ® Cette « musique de nègres » est marginalisée et combattue par la communauté blanche du sud. Mais cette musique existe, et se développe en particulier au bout de la ligne de chemin de fer = Chicago. Là où se construisent les 1ers studios destinés au blues, et où est consacrée la 1ère grande impératrice du blues, Bessie Smith (meurt en 37) Dès 1930 — électrification des instruments, en particulier la guitare ® Formations « modernes » (batterie, piano, contrebasse, guitare électrique, harmonica) supplantent les formations traditionnelles (washboard, piano, contrebasse, guitare sèche ou banjo) & — développement de ce qu’on appelle le Chicago Blues Muddy Waters, né dans le Mississippi (1913-1983). En 1950, il enregistre Rollin’stone, adaptation de Catfish Blues, un blues traditionnel des années 20. Le magazine Rolling Stone lui doit son nom, de même que le groupe de Mick jagger. Catfish Blues, créé en 1941 par Robert Petway. Buddy Guy, né en 1936 (voir vidéo Obama) Le blues continue à se développer dans le sud, avec le swamp blues de Louisiane et à Memphis avec BB King (1925-2015), produit par Sun records et Sam Phillips. 3 O’Clock Blues (1950) Le lien entre le blues et le rock est certainement créé par Louis Jordan = initiateur du Rhythm & blues moderne Choo Choo di Boogie, 1946 Pb. Louis Jordan est noir : il n’est donc pas programmé sur les radios du sud. De la même façon, le rock and roll est une expression « noire » qui donc met du temps à apparaître dans les médias. Remarque sur les appellations et leurs connotations : o boogie-woogie : voit le jour dans les bas-quartiers de la Nouvelle-Orléans, dans les années 30. Boogie : prostituée (boogie girl) Woogie : dérive probable du verbe marcher ® connotation sexuelle. o Rockabilly : contraction de « rock » et « hillbilly » (musique country et western) o Rock ‘n roll : Rock : balancer & bercer Roll : rouler & laminer ® connotation dans les années 30 Expression appliquée à la musique parce que les pas de danse des Noirs dans les Honky Tonks sur du rhythm and blues évoquent la gestuelle de l’amour et du sexe. La communauté blanche accepte d’abord d’utiliser seulement le mot « rock ». « Roll » n’apparaît qu’après 55, sur les radios. L’expression complète apparaît d’abord sur une affiche pour un concert à Cleveland en 1952, à l’initiative d’un disc-jockey (Alan Freed) qui a constaté l’engouement multi-racial de la jeunesse pour le rhythm and blues. L’histoire du blues ne permet pas à la musique black d’être reconnue. Il faut attendre la révolution rock et cette révolution rock trouve son autre ferment dans sa rencontre avec la country music. .

  • “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
    Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.
