Module Description: This module will enable students to acquire the skills to arrange, conduct and rehearse music for small ensembles. By working closely with designated groups, students will gain the technical understanding needed to write effectively for a variety of instruments and voices. Students will also develop a secure base of conducting and techniques. The module emphasises the importance of clear musical communication both in the and in rehearsal.

Indicative Content: • Musical structures and form • Instrumental ranges and technical considerations • Transposing instruments • Vocal ranges and technical considerations • Texture and balance • Idiomatic instrumental writing • Manipulation of musical materials • Score & parts preparation • Score reading and interpretation • Conducting and rehearsal techniques • Aural and communication skills

Learning and Teaching Methods: The module will be delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical workshops.
