The Hungarian finished the year with 21 multi-goal games, including five outings of four, four five- goal showings and a pair of six-goal performances. He went for a career-high nine goals in the Tigers' rout of Santa Clara on October 21, the most in a single game at Pacific since at least 1997, and tied for the most on record in MPSF history. Picked ninth in the preseason conference poll, he led Pacific to its second consecutive sixth-place finish at the MPSF Tournament. Through three seasons in Stockton, Erdelyi sits fourth all-time in Pacific history with 191 career goals. Erdelyi, who was also the MPSF Newcomer of the Year in 2010, is the first-ever Tiger player of the year. 222000111222 MMMPPPSSSFFF NNNeeewwwcccooommmeeerrr ooofff ttthhheee YYYeeeaaarrr BRET BONANNI • # 8 • FRESHMAN • DRIVER • STANFORD Stanford freshman driver Bret Bonanni (Huntington Beach, CA/Mater Dei HS) became the program’s fourth MPSF Newcomer of the Year, following Will Hindle-Katel (2005), Drac Wigo (2006) and Alex Bowen (2011), thanks to a rookie campaign in which he scored a team-leading 73 goals and finished second in the conference with 3.17 goals per game. The offensive output was the highest for a Cardinal player since 2004, when Tony Azevedo racked up 80 goals. Bonanni posted 12 hat tricks in 2012, highlighted by a nine-goal performance against Air Force on October 21 (tied for the most on record in single-game conference history) and an eight-goal effort against UC Irvine on October 27. He was twice named MPSF Player of the Week this year, on the 15th and 29th of October. 222000111222 MMMPPPSSSFFF CCCoooaaaccchhh ooofff ttthhheee YYYeeeaaarrr GAVIN ARROYO • HEAD COACH • SEVENTH YEAR • LONG BEACH STATE Long Beach State head coach Gavin Arroyo guided the second-most successful season in program- history this year, with 24 wins and a fifth-place regular season and conference tournament finish (1981, 25- 9, 6-0 PCAA, NCAA Tournament). One signature win of 2012 came on October 27, an upset on the road over then No. 5 California, 11-10. Making its first MPSF Tournament appearance since 2008, Long Beach State took No. 4 seed Stanford to sudden-victory overtime in the opening round, before closing the weekend with two wins. The 49ers had the third-highest scoring average in the conference this year with 13.03 goals per game (417 goals). This is Arroyo’s second coach of the year award (2007). NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 2 Won-Lost Records In Tournament Play 7 All-Time Results 8 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS After trailing for three quarters, California overtook USC and won the national championship 11-8 in overtime. The Bears captured their 14th national title and first since 2007. Over time, those words will sink in for the 16 Golden Bears that rallied for an 11-8 overtime victory over No. 1-ranked USC on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The two teams had slightly different roads to get here. The Bears, after a 20-4 season, took down Pomona-Pitzer 16-6 in the first play-in game of the NCAA tournament, then handed UCLA its third loss of the year in a 9-8 OT win over the Bruins. Trailing 5-3 entering the fourth period, goals by Conor Neumann and Luca Cupido tied the score and, though the teams traded blows from then until the end of the period, Cal hung on to remain tied at 7 entering extra time. No. 3 Cal (23-4) struck first in the first overtime. A 5-meter penalty shot by Johnny Hooper got the Bears started, and after a goal by USC’s James Walters tied the score at 8, senior Farrel South found the slightest space between USC goalkeeper McQuin Baron and the post, firing it past the Olympian for a 9-8 lead with one minute left in overtime. Perhaps the biggest blow came just before the horn sounded to end the first overtime period.
