From the Superintendent’s Desk Last month I attended the National Narrow Gauge TIME TABLE Convention in Kansas City. You’re asking yourself, “What is a Water Level Route guy doing with all Oct 16, Thur, 7:30PM Div 8. Southern Indiana Club Dec 12, Fri, Div 8 Christmas Party, A lot of what appeals to me is the change of scenery or settings. A good Rails, LaGrange, KY number of railroaders have an urban setting so they can have a number of industries for their fleet of freight cars to serve during an ops session. Buildings may get kit-bashed and extra details are added to make that urban scene come alive. And those are exactly the goals I’ve set in the making of my layout.
Most narrow gauge modelers have their layouts set in some part of the Rockies or the Sierras with the interest in mining or logging. Gone are all the heavy industries and the multi-storied buildings.
Enter wooden truss bridges, tall rock cuts, and various retaining walls. Don’t forget about those large Red Woods and colorful Aspens. Rivers and streams are crystal clear, so the right types of rock need to be placed before that pour is made. Structures have to have just the right amount of rust and weathering. And the list goes on.
Another thing I like about the Narrow Gauge Convention is the show. There were a couple of recognizable names – TCS and Soundtraxx, but the rest were the small companies. You could buy a dozen different shades of stain, the rock molds to do all those rock cuts, and tons of detailing parts. I bought a CD to print a number of card stock buildings from a company named Clever Models. I think that was one that our John Stoltz recommended when he gave his clinic earlier this year.
No matter what part of the country you model, I highly recommend you check out this unique convention. Here are a few photos of layouts and contest entrees. Russ Weis
AT THE SEPTEMBER MEETING
First, we found out that several of you went to the Conference Center finding no one there. Be sure and check the meeting information in each month’s Pie Card for changes. Unfortunately the meeting location on the website was wrong too. That being said, this was discussed at this month’s Board of Directors meeting, and plans are being made to put our meeting locations on a more long term schedule and keep the website updated.
The September meeting was Saturday September 20, 2014 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. There was no old business and no new business brought before the members. Bob Johnson said the Radcliff Club has relocated to Vine Grove. They had been in Brandenburg. Bob Kuchler said he had JMRI loaded on his computer and would like to have someone demonstrate it for him. Russ Weis said there will be a demonstration of WOW sound decoders at Scale Reproductions on Wednesday October 22 at 1 PM.
After the business meeting Russ Weis and Barry Christensen presented an informative program on modeling Railroad Postal and Express Cars. Included were examples of commercially available railroad cars, trucks, and material handling equipment model. Bill and Ruth Lynch provided refreshments. THANK YOU FROM THE DEPOT MUSEUM AT SALEM
As reported in the August Pie Card, Division 8 presented Cecil Smith with the Depot Museum a check for $200 as a donation to the museum.
The Division has received a letter from Cecil thanking us on the behalf of the Depot. Cecil said the money has been placed in a special fund that will be used to purchase an American Flag and appropriate flag stand, to be used in their display and meeting room. He said Division 8 will be recognized as the donor.
EARTHQUAKE! NVN MODEL RAILROAD Napa Valley in California was hit by a significant earthquake August 24. The Napa Valley Model Railroad Club’s railroad the Napa Valley Northern suffered some damage from the quake. Apparently their buildings suffered no structural damage. The layout occupies a 3600 square foot "L" shaped room. With a 1600 square foot second floor serving as a meeting area, library, and
workshop.
