Digital Religion – Blessed are the heretics! ISSN: 1705-6411 Volume 16, Number 1 (January 2020) Author: Jon Baldwin The best thing about religion is that it spawns heretics. Ernst Bloch1 (2009: 122) The consideration of religion, especially when entwined with technology, has as Bloch suggests, spawned much heresy, and this paper considers the constructive heresies of Jean Baudrillard, as well as Ernst Bloch, Byung-Chul Han, and Peter Sloterdijk. Whether it be it be oral, notches on bone, clay engraving, handwritten scrolls, codices, illuminated manuscripts, print books, audio recordings, or more recently, software and mobile applications, religion has been continually mediated by technologies to various degrees. The recent coupling of the terms digital and religion, brought about by the merging of the digital, internet, and forms of religiosity, attests to this. Indeed, religion itself might often be regarded as mediation between god(s) and man, the heaven and earth, the sacred and the profane, and so forth. This paper discusses the notion of digital religion and attendant theoretical approaches. It indicates how Baudrillard’s work might contribute to this configuration and methodology with a consideration of the academic field of ‘digital religion’ and ideas from Marshall McLuhan. Against a somewhat utopian vision and drive, the poverty of a networked digital religion is advanced. The possibility that a form of religion somewhat influenced the advancement of the internet is outlined with focus on Unitarianism and Tim Berners-Lee. Attention turns to Baudrillardian motifs and notions of potlatch, defiance, and challenge as they might inform the developments of certain elements of religion. -

Cult Pseudo-Creativity vs. Creativity in Recovery Gillie Jenkinson, M.A., UKCP Hope Valley Counseling Abstract This article gives a brief history of The Love of God Community, England (“the Community”). It looks at how the Community used creative arts negatively to reinforce control and thought reform, considers whether this use of creative arts is true creativity, and illustrates with case examples how therapists and ex-cult members can use creativity positively for recovery. All individuals’ names and identifying details have been changed. What Is Creativity? The creative impulse is deeply human and intrinsic to being free and alive. These ideas are elaborated in several schools of psychology. Winnicott (2005i) notes that this impulse within us is a source of art, poetry, and other artistic forms, but that creativity and play are even more fundamental than the creation of things (p. 91); they are necessary in the individual’s search for self (p. 73). In healthy living, creativity characterizes the individual’s approach to external reality. This creative approach may be fostered or hampered by ongoing environmental factors that can enhance or stifle creative processes throughout an individual’s life. Carl Rogers (1967), the founder of person-centered psychotherapy, defines the creative process as “the emergence in action of a novel relational product, growing out of the uniqueness of the individual on the one hand and the materials, events, people, or circumstances of his life on the other” (p. 350). Rogers notes that three conditions are necessary for creativity to occur: openness to experience (lack of defensiveness); internal locus of evaluation and evaluative judgment (rather than compliance); and the ability to toy or play with elements and concepts. -

A HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS| W. Michael Ashcraft Routledge 2018 Chapter One: Introduction Douglas Cowan was a young minister in the United Church of Canada. His first parish assignment was to a couple of little towns in southern Alberta, Cardston and Magrath, located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Cowan did not know much about this area, except that many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), or Mormons, lived there. Cardston was the northern limit of Mormon expansion in the 1880s. The first Mormon temple in Canada was built there. When Cowan phoned a denominational official to ask about Cardston’s Mormons, that individual simply said “there are some Mormons there.” In fact, 4000 of the 5000 residents of Cardston were Mormons! Cowan said, “it’s the only place I’ve ever lived where people identify themselves negatively first: ‘Hi, I’m Bob, I’m not Mormon’.”1 Cowan knew nothing about Mormonism, so he went to a Christian bookstore and bought a copy of The God Makers (1984).2 The authors, Ed Decker and Dave Hunt, claimed that they were unveiling Mormonism’s secrets. As Cowan recalled, “I take it [The God Makers] home and I’m in my mother’s kitchen and I’m reading it that afternoon and it’s filled with just the most outlandish things ... I don’t know whether to believe it or not, but I looked up, my Mom says, you know, ‘honey what’s wrong?’ I said, 1 Mom, ‘they’re sending me to Mars.’ But of course I get there and [the Mormons] are just like everybody else… they raise their kids, they farm their crops, they crash their cars.”3 During Cowan’s time in Cardston and Magrath, the locals who were part of the LDS church became his neighbors and friends. -

Heaven’s Gate: End-time prophets in a post-modern era. by George D. Chryssides Abstract The article addresses the question of how the leader of the Heaven‟s Gate group, Marshall Herff Applewhite, was able to persuade his followers of his distinctive interpretation of the Book of Revelation, and hence to commit communal suicide to gain entry to the „Next Level above Human‟. The author considers mainstream scholarly commentary on Revelation, and contrasts this with Applewhite‟s exegesis, arguing that, although the Heaven‟s Gate leader had training in philosophy and theology, he nonetheless devised his own distinctive idiosyncratic interpretation. It is argued that the Heaven‟s Gate group manifested James Beckford‟s four key features of postmodernity: (1) non-rational, devoid of systematic exposition; (2) eclectic, combining science fiction and horticultural metaphors with biblical teaching; (3) spontaneous and frivolous, with unpredictable behaviour on the part of the founder-leaders; and (4) the absence of triumphalist, over-arching myths. Being uninterested in systematic, diachronic interpretation of John‟s Revelation, the meaning of the text for the group derived from its use, in line with Wittgenstein‟s theory of meaning. The author argues, in conclusion, that a community‟s invention of a new meaning for a religious text is nothing new, one important precedent being the early Christian use of Jewish scripture. 1 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy ... clothed in sackcloth ... And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them. -

Please contact the publisher for any further use of this work at [email protected]. http://www.philippinestudies.net The New Cult Phenomenon in Philippine Society The mass suicide of the members of Heaven's Gate led by Herff Applewhite is a recent reminder that "destructive cultism" is not yet a spent force and that the contemporary history of religions is still replete with horrifying rituals. In the past two decades alone, the fateful end of the members of the Branch Davidians led by David Koresh (Waco, Texas, 19 April 19931,' the Jonestown massacre (Guy- ana, 18 November 1978), and the numerous worldwide deaths of the members of Solar Temple easily come to mind.2 The thirst for self- members of baptized flocks, often turns into a thirst for revenge against incredulous heathens as exemplified by the series of nerve gas attacks recently perpetuated by the Japanese cult, Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth) led by its founder, Shoko A~hara.~The list of self- annihilating rituals and terroristic holy wars can go on and on (van der Vyver 199614 Attempts to explain rationally these seemingly irrational behaviors tend to totally reject cults as pure and sophisticated forms of reli- gious charlatanism.
