BM#33 “A Sure Foundation” – Helaman 1-5 I. Introduction II. Helaman 1 III. Helaman 2 IV. Helaman 3 P V. Helaman 4 a VI. Helaman 5 g VII. Conclusions e I. Introduction | 1 Kathryn Jenkins Gordon states, “Mormon abridged the book of Helaman from what was probably a huge collection of historical records; they were the large plates that detailed the wars and contentions of the Nephites and the prophecies of those who lived just prior to the birth of the Savior. The book of Helaman is extremely instructive in the way in which it demonstrates the stark contrast between righteousness and wickedness…[We learn] that evil works can destroy entire societies but that the devotion of righteous people can cause the demise of evil.” (Scripture Study Made Easy: The Book of Mormon. American Fork, Utah: Covenant Communications, Inc., 2015, 429). As we proceed, it is important to understand that the Helaman who is referenced is the grandson of Alma, the younger, and the son of Helaman, who was the prophet and the military leader of the two thousand stripling warriors. Upon his death, Helaman gave the records to his brother, Shiblon. (see Alma 63:1.) Upon Shiblon’s death, he gave the records to his nephew, or the son of his brother, Helaman, possibly since his brother, Coranton had gone north to deliver supplies and not returned. (see Alma 63:10-11.) For clarity, Helaman, son of Helaman, will be referred to as Helaman II. Outline of Helaman 1-5: “A. Chapter 1: Three sons of Pahoran I contend for the judgeship.

  • New Testament Words and Quotations in the Book of Mormon
IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 22, Issue 2, Ver. I (Feb. 2017) PP 120-147 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org New Testament Words and Quotations in the Book of Mormon Terrence L. Chambers, Ph.D. University of Louisiana at Lafayette Abstract: This paper identifies 441 phrases that are seven words long or longer, that are common to the Book of Mormon and the New Testament, but that are not found in the Old Testament. These phrases are proposed as candidate quotations of the New Testament by the Book of Mormon. This is important because the presence of any New Testament material in the Book of Mormon would seem to be inherently anachronistic and therefore potentially problematic for those who accept the Book of Mormon as a religious text. This study defines three categories of New Testament quotations in the Book of Mormon, and identifies for each category the potential modes of transmission that would permit the appearance of a New Testament quotation in the Book of Mormon that would also be consistent with the internal structure of the book. This study shows that all potential modes of transmission either require a supernatural assumption or the conclusion that authorship of the Book of Mormon postdates the King James Version of the Bible. Keywords –Book of Mormon, New Testament, Anachronisms, Authorship, Historicity I. INTRODUCTION The Book of Mormon, which was published in 1830, claims to be a 19th Century translation by Joseph Smith Jr. of an ancient abridgement of a library of even more ancient sacred records that had been originally written by three different groups of Hebrews or Israelites that had crossed the ocean to arrive in the New World.

The Supremacy of the Word: Alma’s Mission to the Zoramites and the Conversion of the Lamanites Michael F. Perry Near the end of his mortal life, Alma leads an expedition to preach among the apostate Zoramites in the land of Antionum in order to “try the virtue of the word of God” (Alma 31:5).1 This decision to try pure doctrine via missionary labor stems from Alma’s faith that “the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them” (Alma 31:5). The intent of Alma’s mission to the Zoramites is clear, but com- mentators are divided on how they gauge its results.

  • Book of Mormon Tribal Af Liation and Military Castes
Book of Mormon Tribal Afliation and Military Castes John A. Tvedtnes This article demonstrates that military and political leadership among the Nephites and related peoples was often a responsibility inherited from one’s father. The acceptance of this thesis makes it possible to understand certain aspects of Book of Mormon social structure, the conduct of war, and the martial viewpoint of the book’s abridger, Mormon. We begin with an examination of what appears to be a tribal structure among Book of Mormon peoples. For this purpose, we dene the tribe as it is known today among the Arabs, whose social structure is akin to that of the ancient Israelites. The Arab tribe is a quasi-political unit of considerable size whose members are, for the most part, genetically related. To be sure, Middle Eastern tribes such as those found among the Arabs often include “retainers,” whose loyalty is to a larger kinship group to which they (or their ancestors) have attached themselves. But most tribal members claim a common ancestor. The primary kinship unit is the hamula or extended family, which also demands primary loyalty. The tribe is secondary except when specic privileges or positions of honor are based on descent from a remote ancestor. In ancient Israel, tribal afliation generally determined one’s political loyalties to one or another of the two kingdoms that dominated the land of lsrael during much of its biblical history. Thus, for example, the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Simeon, and, to a large extent, Levi, comprised the kingdom of Judah. The other tribes comprised the king dom of lsrael.

  • The Book of Helaman
390 | Alma 63:7–Helaman 1:2 Poetic Parallelisms in the Book of Mormon 7 And in the thirty and eighth year, this man built other ships. And the first ship did also return, and many more people did enter into it; and they also took much provisions, and set out again to the land northward. 8 And it came to pass that they were never heard of more. And we suppose that they were drowned in the depths of the sea. And it came to pass that one other ship also did sail forth; and whither she did go we know not. 9 And it came to pass that in this year there were many people who went forth into the land northward. And thus ended the thirty and eighth year. 10 And it came to pass in the thirty and ninth year of the reign of the judges, Shiblon died also, and Corianton had gone forth to the land northward in a ship, to carry forth provisions unto the people who had gone forth into that land. 11 A Therefore it became expedient for Shiblon to confer those sacred things, before his death, B upon the son of Helaman, who was called Helaman, C being called after the name of his father. 12 D Now behold, all those engravings which were in the possession of Helaman E were written and sent forth among the children of men throughout all the land, E save it were those parts which had been commanded by Alma should not go forth. 13 D Nevertheless, these things were to be kept sacred, C and handed down from one generation to another; B therefore, in this year, they had been conferred upon Helaman, A before the death of Shiblon.

  • The Mention of Aminadab in the Narrative Context of Helaman
“My People Are Willing”: The Mention of Aminadab in the Matthew L. Bowen [Page 83]Abstract: Aminadab, a Nephite by birth who later dissented to the Lamanites, played a crucial role in the mass conversion of three hundred Lamanites (and eventually many others). At the end of the pericope in which these events are recorded, Mormon states: “And thus we see that the Lord began to pour out his Spirit upon the Lamanites, because of their easiness and willingness to believe in his words” (Helaman 6:36), whereas he “began to withdraw” his Spirit from the Nephites “because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts” (Helaman 6:35). The name Aminadab is a Semitic/Hebrew name meaning “my kinsman is willing” or “my people are willing.” As a dissenter, Aminadab was a man of two peoples. Mormon and (probably) his source were aware of the meaning of Aminadab’s name and the irony of that meaning in the context of the latter’s role in the Lamanite conversions and the spiritual history of the Nephites and Lamanites. The narrative’s mention of Aminadab’s name (Helaman 5:39, 41) and Mormon’s echoes of it in Helaman 6:36, 3 Nephi 6:14, and elsewhere have covenant and temple significance not only in their ancient scriptural setting, but for latter-day readers of the Book of Mormon today. Like the mention of a woman named “Abish” in Alma 19:6,1 Mormon’s abrupt, threefold mention of a man named “Aminadab” in Helaman 5:39-41 draws attention to an individual whose life and legacy might otherwise have remained anonymous and thus forgotten.
