  • Project Mercury - America’S First Manned Missions
Project Mercury - America’s First Manned Missions - The dynamic Project Mercury, which put America’s first voyagers into space, is considered by many to be one of the most significant periods of scientific and technological advances in our nation’s history. The program which ran from 1958 – 1963 marked the rigorous early years of the “Space Race” as the United States and Soviet Union battled in a quest to be the first to land on the moon. Project Mercury began on October 7, 1958 just one year and three days after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first-ever artificial satellite to be put into orbit. Unlike early satellite missions that were not manned, the main goal of the Mercury Program was to put humans into space. The project began by selecting the first human voyagers to fly the missions; they were to be called astronauts. Chosen by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in April 1959, the group was called the Original Seven or Astronaut Group 1. They were introduced in civilian dress, deliberately to project an air of being average Americans. In reality, they were all trained military test pilots, college educated, most as engineers, in superior health physically and psychologically, with a focus on their purpose and they possessed charming personalities. In short time, with growing curiosity about their risky undertaking, the astronauts quickly gained celebrity status and elite standing with the public. Soon, the first adventurers became affectionately known as the Mercury Seven. The original Mercury Seven astronauts were Scott Carpenter; L. Gordon Cooper, Jr.; John H.

  • The Right Stuff” Is an Inspirational Look at the Early Days of the U.S
Based on the iconic bestseller by Tom Wolfe, “The Right Stuff” is an inspirational look at the early days of the U.S. Space Program and the incredible story of America’s first astronauts, the Mercury Seven. At the height of the Cold War in 1959, the Soviet Union dominates the space race and America fears it is a nation in decline. Newly-formed NASA has the monumental task of sending a man into space and its engineers estimate they need decades to accomplish the feat. They are given two years. Project Mercury would recruit and train astronauts from a handful of the military’s best pilots. Within days of being presented to the world, the Mercury Seven become instant celebrities, forged into heroes before they achieve a single heroic act. Two men at the center of the story jockey to become the first man in space: Major John Glenn, a Marine and committed family man, and Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard, one of the best pilots in Navy history. The rest of the Mercury Seven includes Lieutenant Gordo Cooper, the youngest of the seven selected to everyone’s surprise; Wally Schirra, a competitive pilot with a gift for pulling pranks; Scott Carpenter, dubbed “The Poet” by the other astronauts; Deke Slayton, a taciturn but incredibly intelligent pilot and engineer; and Gus Grissom, a decorated military veteran who eventually becomes the second man in space. The series also examines the astronauts’ families, including Annie Glenn, who contends with a speech impairment in the public eye; Louise Shepard, who anchors her family while refusing to let Alan’s transgressions affect her home; and Trudy Cooper, an accomplished pilot who puts her own ambitions aside to present the image of a happy family.

Book Summary Based on the same sort of detailed, on-scene, high-energy reporting that powered Tom Wolfe's previous bestselling novels, Back to Blood is another brilliant, spot-on, scrupulous, and often hilarious reckoning with our times. About this book. The Miami Herald office where John Smith is employed, for example, bears little resemblance to a present-day newsroom and seems almost to have been modeled on Clark Kent's Daily Planet. Reviewed by Judy Krueger. There are some Jewish characters as well. The products discussed here were independently chosen by our editors. The entire Greater Miami area, including the local government and police force, is now run by first- and second-generation Cuban immigrants Wolfe told an interviewer:. Wolfe drives home his by now familiar Darwinian view of human nature, even as he showers us with his much-imitated confetti of status and sartorial details. Invasions do the same thing. What did surprise was that his third, I Am Charlotte Simmons, in , fell so much further short. More about membership! Join today for full access. Wolfe has written and spoken extensively about the need for novelists to maintain their relevance by embracing journalistic techniques, so readers might be initially tempted to give him credit for having done his homework to accurately capture the essence of, say, Miami politics or internecine struggles among Florida Cubans.

  • The Right Stuff
Seeking the Right Stuff Michael D. Griffin Administrator National Aeronautics and Space Administration Los Angeles Air Force Base El Segundo, California 14 September 2008 I want to thank Congresswoman Jane Harman for giving me the excuse I deeply desired to escape Washington for southern California, “God’s country”, and one of my former homes, with sunny weather and beautiful beaches. It is a great place for aerospace engineers to ponder the fluid dynamics of the waves as well, as well as those to be found in the Manhattan Beach Brewery. And I want to thank the Air Force for hosting us here tonight in a place commonly referred to as the Hollywood Air Force Base. Tom Sheriden, the commander of the Space & Missile System Center, walks in the footsteps of giants in our business. One of my former mentors and personal heroes was General Bernard (“Benny”) Schriever, who came to Los Angeles in 1954 with a small, elite group of officers who built the Thor, Atlas, Titan, and Minuteman missiles, the foundation for all future aerospace systems launched into orbit. General Schriever also helped NASA in the early days of the space program and Project Mercury, the subject of Tom Wolfe’s elegant book The Right Stuff. For that, NASA’s and our nation’s success in space exploration is due in part to the men and women of the Air Force Space & Missile Systems Center. Since this evening’s discussion is about seeking “The Right Stuff”, I consulted Tom Wolfe’s book to remind me of that unique author’s definition of it: “As to just what this ineffable quality was.

Philip Kaufman’s film shows how an unknown phenomenon – space travel – became a familiar topic by referring first to the Hollywood Western and then to melodrama and comedy. The Right Stuff uses genre elements to examine how astronauts in the 1960s became public figures. The film is a case point for the idea that we do not so much let an unknown phenome- non like space travel determine our cultural outlook, but instead use cultur- al habits like genre conventions to transform a new phenomenon into something with which we can cope. The film showed its audience that al- ready in the early days of space travel, starting with supersonic jet planes in the 1940s, film genres were used to prepare the general public for the space- age revolution. The Right Stuff addresses not only what its own audience knew about the decline of the Hollywood Western but also what audiences in the early days of space travel themselves used as their cultural reference for their understanding of a new phenomenon.

  • NJ Physics Professor Has the “Right Stuff”
NJ Physics Professor Has the “Right Stuff” NJ Physics Professor Has the “Right Stuff” Valorie Sands In 2005, Dr. Greg Olsen became the third person ever to travel into outer space as a private citizen. Unlike NASA astronauts who earn a generous salary, he bought his own ticket into space. He paid about $20 million for the trip, a ten‐day orbit aboard the Expedition 11 Russian Soyuz rocket, which docked at the International Space Station. He also took responsibility for his own training. The space flight was the achievement of a lifetime for the New Jersey entrepreneur and college physics professor. Olsen's fascination with outer space and astronomy began when he was still a boy. He was born in 1945, years before space travel was close to becoming a reality. In fact, space exploration did not really heat up until the post‐WWII rivalry known as the Cold War between Russia and the U.S. Both countries fought to win the race to space. The Race to Space In 1957, the Soviet Union took the lead when it sent Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite, into space. But by 1962, U.S. President John F. Kennedy made it clear that the nation would not take a backseat to Russia. “We choose to go to the moon in this decade... because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win,” said Kennedy. When asked why he loved space travel, Dr. Olsen talked about his professional crewmates, NASA astronaut Bill McArthur and Russian cosmonaut Valery Tokarev.

Weekly What #6 Elaine Bennett’s analysis of “How Tom Wolfe Became…Tom Wolfe” by Michael Lewis, Vanity Fair, October 8, 2015 This is a really long piece—much longer than the usual pieces Vanity Fair publishes. I’m only going to share some excerpts with you here, but I hope you’ll seek out and read the whole thing: http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2015/10/how-tom-wolfe-became-tom-wolfe [Note: if you read the full piece, you’ll encounter some of the casual racism of the 1940s in Wolfe’s youthful writing as well as the pervasive elitism of New York in the…well…forever.] Excerpt #1—the opening of 2 sections of the article How Tom Wolfe Became…Tom Wolfe I was 11 or maybe 12 years old when I discovered my parents’ bookshelves. They’d been invisible right up to the moment someone or something told me that the books on them were stuffed with dirty words and shocking behavior—a rumor whose truth was eventually confirmed by Portnoy’s Complaint. The book I still remember taking down from the shelf was Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers. The only word in the title I understood was “the.” The cover showed a picture of a bored-looking blonde housewife nestled in the lap of a virile black man. It seemed just the sort of thing to answer some questions I had about the facts of life. It didn’t. Instead, it described a cocktail party given in the late 1960s for the Black Panthers by Leonard Bernstein in his fancy New York City apartment.
