His research investigates spaces of exception as predominant forms of contemporary urbanization. El Hadi holds a Doctorate of Design from Harvard University, a Master of Architecture from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Architecture from La Cambre in Brussels. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, El Hadi was a Lecturer in Architecture at MIT and a Postdoctoral Fellow in Urban Planning and Design at the GSD. He is co-author of Geographies of Trash (Actar, 2015) and editor-in-chief of New Geographies 4: Scales of the Earth (Harvard GSD, 2010). His professional practice has received many awards including the Europan 6 award, the First Prize of the Rougerie Foundation and the Architecture League Prize for Young Architects and Designers. His recent writings have been published in the Journal of Cultural Geography, the Journal of Architectural Education, the Avery Review, Topos, MONU, Volume, and San Rocco.
