Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

To explain such inconsistency, I explore the case of joke theft through participant-observation data on stand-up comics in Los Angeles. Informal, community-based systems govern property rights covering jokes. Most cases that could constitute joke theft are ambiguous, because of the possibility of parallel thought. I find that insiders’ accusations are loosely coupled to similarity. Instead, enforcement more reflects how much insiders regard an individual as authentic to the community. Observers account of a possible transgressor’s backstage behaviors and technical expertise to discern if a transgression occurred. Comics with a track record of anti-social behavior, external reward orientation, and lackluster on-stage craft are vulnerable to accusations for even borderline acts, because these qualities conform with shared pattern of a transgressor.

To answer this question, I use participant-observer data on Los Angeles stand-up comics to explore the phenomenon of joke theft. Informal, community-based systems govern the property rights pertaining to jokes. Most instances of possible joke theft are ambiguous owing to the potential for simultaneous and coincidental discovery. I find that accusations are not strongly coupled to jokes’ similarity, and enforcement depends mainly on the extent to which insiders view the comic in question as being authentic to the community. Thus comics who are oriented toward external rewards, have a track record of anti-social behavior, and exhibit lackluster on-stage craft are vulnerable to joke theft accusations even in borderline cases— because those inauthentic characteristics are typical of transgressors.

In particular, it explores how individuals navigate these uncertain, project-based fields, which are characterized by network forms of organization. Drawing from of five years of ethnographic research into stand-up comedians in Los Angeles, I crafted three chapters that examine participants’ decision-making and social organization. The first chapter covers the underlying processes and mechanisms for career development among artists. It introduces and defines the model of a layered career. In the case of stand-up comedy, individuals progressively move through three layers. Each exhibits its own distinctive organizational bases, challenges, interactional processes, relationship types, and rewards. While development involves one matriculating through layers, it also requires artists to maintain their participation in prior layers, because each is ideally suited for different aspects of practice, creativity, and social support. Careers ii in these contexts involve building a durable infrastructure rather than a simple passage through discrete statuses. The second chapter explores the informal enforcement of intellectual property rights in stand-up comedy.

  • 1 Tom Rhodes Tom Rhodes Has Been a Stand‐Up
    Tom Rhodes www.tomrhodes.net Tom Rhodes has been a stand‐up comedian since he was 17 years old. Early years At the age of 12 Tom's father, a decorated Vietnam war hero with a great sense of humor and a love of stand‐up comedy, took Tom to see his uncle Bob perform at a comedy show. The entrance to the room was right next to the stage and as a joke the comedian on stage pulled Tom up with him because he wearing a Washington Redskins jacket. He interviewed Tom as if he was the coach of the Washington Redskins. It was that moment on stage in Washington DC, seeing the happy people with their heads thrown back in laughter, that Tom Rhodes decided to be a stand‐up comedian. Later that same year Toms family moved to Oviedo Florida just outside of Orlando and Tom became obsessed with everything to do and related to comedy. He dreamed to become either a major baseball player or a professional stand‐up comedian. Sometime during high school as the swift curve balls increased their precision Tom knew he wasn’t born to be a baseball player and continued to fill notebooks with joke ideas and focus on following his comedy dreams. Tom’s father David had many comedy classic albums in the house and with his father guidance he studied the masters Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby and Rodney Dangerfield. While attending Oviedo High School, everyone knew Tom wanted to be a comedian and he was invited to host talent shows, pep rallies, and the morning and afternoon announcements.

    Case Study of Comedian Hannibal Buress and Humor as Change Agent by Frankie Campisano — 25 A Case Study of Comedian Hannibal Buress and Humor as an Agent for Change Frankie Campisano Media Arts & Entertainment Elon University Abstract Comedian Hannibal Buress was launched into the national spotlight after a YouTube clip of his stand-up routine went viral in October 2014. In the clip, Buress addressed the sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby, fueling renewed interest in the case in the public eye, leading to Cosby’s arrest in December 2015. This case study examined the material in Buress’ stand-up comedy specials to contextualize the clip and determine which classical theories of humor his work employs, as well as persuasive methods used to engage audiences and address sociopolitical subject matter. I. Introduction Within the past five years, stand-up comedian, writer, and actor Hannibal Buress has hurtled toward the pantheon of modern comedy A-Listers, with Buress’ act being compared to critical and commercial darlings Louis C.K. and Aziz Ansari, as well as Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and other incisive Black comics (Zinoman, 2011). While his resume includes stints writing for both Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock and supporting roles on cult-television hits Broad City and The Eric Andre Show, Buress inadvertently found himself in the national spotlight and the subject of major media scrutiny only after an online clip from a performance in Philadelphia in October 2014 went viral (Hsu, 2015). In the clip, Buress criticizes actor and comedian Bill Cosby for his seemingly conflated image as a moralistic, elder statesman for the Black community in light of 13 allegations of sexual assault at the time of the performance.
