SIR: I ba\e the honor to transmit here,vith a eopy of a Jetter dated the 2d instant, from the Commissioner of the General Land Office, sub mitting an estimate of appropriations (copy also heTewitb) required to enable this Department to pay the expense of the survey of the Cherokee strip adjoining the southern bonn<lary of Kansas, which was ceded in trust to the United States by the Clwrokee Nation, by the se,enteenth article of the treaty with said Indians, of July 19, 1866, (U.S. Statutes, vo1. 14, page 804.) The estimate provides thn t the sum asked for, $13,000, Sllall ue n~fnnded to the Treasury of the United States from the proceeds of the sale of the lands embrace(l in said strip. SIR: I ha-ve the bon or to inclose. herewith copy of a communication from the surYe~or general of Kansas, dated the 20th ultimo, recommend ing an appropriatio11 of $13,000 to 11n:y the expense of the surYey of the Cllerokee strip adjoining the southern bouudary of Kansas, wbich was 2 SURVEY OF CHEROKEE STRIP ADJOINING KANSAS . .ceded in trust to the United States by the Cherokee Nation, by the seventeenth article of the treaty of July lU, 1866, (U.S. Statutes, vol.l4, page 804.) The lands have been contracted for survey, with stipulation of pay ment to deputy snn·eyor out of the proceeds of sale of the same, but in view of the fact that the contemplated proceeds will not be realized for many months to come, for the reason that official plats of the surveys -will not be ready for some time after the returns of surveys shall have been made to the surveyor general's office, I recommend the propriety of submitting to Congress the inclosed estimate of appropriation, to be rp,funded to the Trea.sury from the first proceeds derived from sale of the lands in question. To enable the Secretary of the Interior to pay the expense of the survey of the strip of land adjoining the southern bou_ndary of Kansas, which w:as ceded in irnst to the United States by the Chcroke~ Natwn, by the seventeenth art1ele of treaty of July 19, 1806 (Yi(le U. S. Statutes, vol. 14, page 80-l,) there is hereby appropriated the sum of thirteen thousand dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary.
