Welcome by Head Teacher Dear Parent It is with pleasure that I welcome you to Kirkmichael Primary. I hope you find this handbook useful and informative. If however, after reading it you have some queries, please do not hesitate to contact myself, any member of staff or the school office and we will do our best to help you. Here at Kirkmichael we strive to create a purposeful and caring atmosphere in which our pupils want to learn and want to succeed. Pupils are encouraged to take a pride in themselves and in their surrounding environment. Our energies and expertise are focused towards developing our pupils academically and socially and preparing them as fully as possible for the next stage in their education. We aim to help our pupils become successful learners, confident individuals, effective communicators and responsible citizens. You will have many opportunities to visit the school in the coming years and to meet the people who are important in your child’s education. Can we take this opportunity of stressing the importance of keeping in touch with the school. It is always best to contact us if you have any questions about school life, no matter how small or trivial they may seem. We give you our assurance that if we have any concerns about your child, you will always be contacted sooner rather than later. The school will always welcome you and we encourage you to participate in many of our varied activities. When a child joins us at Kirkmichael, we are all entering a new partnership with the aim of producing the best education for your child. School Ethos, Aims and Values WE AIM TO CREATE A POSITIVE ETHOS BY WHICH: all pupils are provided for equally there is an atmosphere of trust and co-operation between staff and pupils there is a safe, relaxed and happy teaching environment staff, pupils and parents are valued visitors are welcomed staff and pupils are encouraged and motivated as fully as possible 2. WE AIM TO PROVIDE A STIMULATING AND APPROPRIATE CURRRICULUM FOR OUR PUPILS WHICH WILL BE: staffed and resourced effectively well planned and evaluated delivered using a variety of teaching approaches broad, balanced and will provide continuity effective in ensuring pupils achieve the highest possible standards according to their abilities. 3. WE AIM TO IMPROVE THE STANDARD OF ATTAINMENT WITH THE SCHOOL BY: promoting an ethos of achievement setting targets in literacy and numeracy in line with National Policy monitoring pupil attainment closely through Early Intervention methods, appropriate diagnostic testing and National Tests. 4. WE AIM TO ASSIST OUR PUPILS PERSONAL & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT BY: building self esteem promoting an appreciation of people and property developing controlled, responsible behaviour fostering an awareness of the importance of physical and mental health and fitness developing study skills and habits of individual study 5. In brief, we belief that the integrity of the Galloway Forest Park, the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park and the Galloway and South Ayrshire Biosphere as tourist destinations are threatened by a development on such a large scale on the major tourist route from the Central Belt to Dumfries and Galloway, the A713; we believe the development is too close to the much loved and used Monument Hill walk, as well as to the nationally significant Designed Landscapes of Blairquhan and Craigengillan; and we believe the survey carried out shows that the threat posed by Keirs Hill to the many tourist businesses in Straiton and nearby is real, and the dismissal of this threat by the PBA Roger Tym survey is completely contradicted by the evidence that they themselves adduce. In April 2013, we also produced a report on tourism in Straiton, Wind Farm Development & Tourism in Straiton: a case-study of tourist provision for the Galloway Forest Park and the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park.

    Maybole & North Carrick Communities Locality Data Profile 2017 *Premature mortality is described as deaths under the age of 75 years. This measure is considered an important indicator as a higher premature mortality rate suggests there is still room to improve population health. POPULATION AND DEPRIVATION Overall, the South Ayrshire population is projected to remain relatively static between 2014 and 2039. However, projections suggest that there will be approximately a 10% drop in the working age population whilst the percentage of individuals of pensionable age and over is due to increase by 21% across the same time period. Many parts of South Ayrshire are prosperous and it is a vibrant area in which to live and work, and to visit; however, significant inequalities continue to exist within and between our communities. • The Maybole & North Carrick Communities (MNCC) Locality has grown slightly over recent years and now sits at 10,697 people. • One in five people in the MNCC Locality are aged over 65. • Approximately one out of eight people in the MNCC Locality live in a deprived neighbourhood. • Approximately one in ten children in the MNCC Locality live in poverty. ECONOMY AND SKILLS The key driver underpinning our future prosperity and the ability to realise the potential of our communities is a local economy which develops and achieves sustainable growth. Delivering economic recovery and growth will contribute to improve outcomes for young and old, improved health, employment, inclusion, and safer and stronger communities. • Two out of three people aged 16 to 74 are economically active. • Approximately half the people in work in the MNCC Locality work in skilled trades, professional occupations and in elementary occupations.

River 87% Coastal 6% Surface water 7% Figure 1: Annual Average Damages by flood source Summary of flooding impacts River flooding within this area is primarily attributed to the Mill Burn which flows in a north westerly direction through Girvan before joining the Water of Girvan immediately downstream of the A77. This is expected to impact a number of residential and non- residential properties, along with sections of the road and rail network (notably the A77). The Water of Girvan is outwith the Potentially Vulnerable Area boundary to the north but as the larger watercourse, it is likely to contribute to flooding on the lower reaches of the Mill Burn. The Mill Burn primarily flows as an open channel through a largely residential area with culverts beneath a number of roads in the area. The Myoch Burn, which flows in a westerly direction approximately 500m to the south of Girvan, is another source of river flooding which predominately affects agricultural land but also presents a risk to a caravan park. The only urban areas at risk of surface water flooding are in the vicinity of the Mill Burn in Girvan.
