When Joe Redington Sr. envisioned the first Iditarod in 1973, he likely also had a vision there would be a 50th running. Joe’s focus was clearly on the historical importance of sled dogs and culture. A visionary, he likely recognized that the Iditarod would pique interest of dog drivers and dog lovers worldwide For 50 years the Iditarod has built a growing, diversified culture that packs a powerful deeply rooted relevance punch. Planning and preparation for the golden anniversary race next year is in full swing. The City of Nome has been a steadfast and vital partner, and the Iditarod continues its commitment that will not only ensure Alaska’s iconic Iditarod will endure but also allow for the leveraging of Iditarod’s brand, and deep trustful community relationships. The fact is that many rural communities in Alaska tune out external initiatives and or authorities. The Iditarod is uniquely positioned to reinforce Nome and its neighboring villagesa collective and culturally relevant voice. Trust is essential, and the Iditarod has a track record of earning trust through communication, and follow through. In 2020, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race persevered and finished the race in Nome during the middle of the first wave of Coronavirus Pandemic in late March. After the race ended, we were greatly impacted by COVID-19, suffering both loss of revenue and increased expenses. Both Nome and the Iditarod incurred deep losses from the lack of tourism sales. That trend continued in 2021. Through funding from municipalities and the Alaska Community Foundation, we were able to continue to persevere by building a new “Gold Core” Loop, and building a campaign that was successful in ensuring that the residents of communities along the trail would not be impacted by COVID 19. Our teams on the ground conducted more than 7,000 rapid molecular tests. We achieved our goal of zero transmission in the communities we traveled through, and we staged a race that encompassed a number of firsts. Again, while other races chose to wait a year, we did not. But, we did miss not being able to finish our race under the burled arch. In order to drive awareness of Nome’s stature as a gateway to Arctic tourism, a beacon of maritime economic development, and a leader in healthy community development, funding assistance from the City of Nome will allow a heightened level of promotion to a greater degree on a year-round basis. We believe an expanded City-Iditarod joint venture in this regard can be the stimulus to increase the influx of tourism-related dollars to invigorate Nome’s economy and ensure Iditarod’s ongoing presence for decades to come. The Iditarod positively impacts the state with an estimated $18M annually. We are a revenue source for each of the 23 communities located in western Alaska working closely with local businesses to purchase food, lodging and other amenities such as the servicing aircraft, snow machines, and other cold weather services, to include the City of Nome. The City of Nome’s estimated economic impact is approximately $1.1Million. While the Iditarod will persevere, the fact is COVID’s impact has exasperated the many challenges facing all Alaskans, including us. The Iditarod is seeking $ 100,000 from the City of Nome to offset projected hard costs for staging the 2022 finish in Nome, with the assurance that we not only enhance the overall economic and social wellbeing of the people of Nome, but also grow awareness of what Nome has to offer through the following proactive initiatives: 1. Immediately start marketing Nome Tourism by Targeting 50th Anniversary of Iditarod (2022) and Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 1925 Serum Run To Nome The Iditarod has already sold five Ultimate Race Fan packages that include a trip to Nome during the finish. We intend to plug in to the Nome CVB to market other Nome trips in 2022 and include working with Nome’s tourism small business partners to provide added value packages for tourists to take advantage of while in Nome. By cross-linking online websites of the Iditarod and the Nome Chamber of Commerce-operated Nome CVB, and some content modifications, we believe we can reach more people to make Nome their travel destination, not just in March, but year-round Iditarod will produce a promotional segment to air to Race fans around the world. We will provide a digital to the Nome CVB in order to draw more tourist and business demand for Nome. 2. Positively Affect the City of Nome’s Economic Impact Before and During the 2022 Iditarod (The below hard costs will be directly spent in Nome providing direct cash infusion and benefit to Nome’s small businesses) Anticipate 40% increase in 2022 more volunteers/Staff/requiring lodging than 2020 Flights to and from Nome A big revenue period for the Nome’s food and beverage service industry. Iditarod fans will purchase eco-cultural tours included but not limited to crabbing, mushing and snow machining. Logistics for Iditarod Air Force, Trail Breakers, Sweeps, Communications, Finish Coordination Team Vehicle Rentals 3. City of Nome Event Execution Nome Finishers Banquet at the Nome Recreation Center Special events and programs during the Iditarod are revenue sources to offset overall race costs. The Iditarod anticipates a full house of local residents, mushers, and visitors attending the event. With sponsorship of key events, admission ticket costs can be directed to other race expenses. Two long-time sponsors were forced to withdraw as a result of PETA pressures, and we hope the City of Nome can help keep the Finisher’s Banquet a key event drawing participants from all over the world and stay in Nome a couple extra days for an opportunity to meet the greatest athletes on the planet (the sled dogs) and their mushers as they arrive in Nome!     Iditarod National Historic Trail i Historic Overview — Robert King Introduction: Today’s Iditarod Trail, a symbol of frontier travel and once an important artery of Alaska’s winter commerce, served a string of mining camps, trading posts, and other settlements founded between 1880 and 1920, during Alaska’s Gold Rush Era. Alaska’s gold rushes were an extension of the American mining frontier that dates from colonial America and moved west to California with the gold discovery there in 1848. In each new territory, gold strikes had caused a surge in population, the establishment of a territorial government, and the development of a transportation system linking the goldfields with the rest of the nation. Alaska, too, followed through these same general stages. With the increase in gold production particularly in the later 1890s and early 1900s, the non-Native population boomed from 430 people in 1880 to some 36,400 in 1910. In 1912, President Taft signed the act creating the Territory of Alaska. At that time, the region’s 1 Iditarod National Historic Trail: Historic Overview transportation systems included a mixture of steamship and steamboat lines, railroads, wagon roads, and various cross-country trail including ones designed principally for winter time dogsled travel. Of the latter, the longest ran from Seward to Nome, and came to be called the Iditarod Trail. The Iditarod Trail today: The Iditarod trail, first commonly referred to as the Seward to Nome trail, was developed starting in 1908 in response to gold rush era needs. While marked off by an official government survey, in many places it followed preexisting Native trails of the Tanaina and Ingalik Indians in the Interior of Alaska.

    The History of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race® Since 1973, mushers have challenged themselves in a race nicknamed The Last Great Race on Earth®, racing each March from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. Nearly a thousand miles in length, mushers and teams travel over mountain ranges, through monotonous, flat tundra, to the western Alaskan coast and finally to the town of Nome, established when gold was discovered there in 1898. By 1899, Nome's population numbered 10,000. The route that most of the race follows is a trail that was created long before the race became a race. Used by Native Alaskans for hunting and travel to various villages, the Iditarod Trail was cleared in 1908 by government employees, but it wasn't until the 1910 gold discoveries in Iditarod which is a ghost town now, Ruby, Ophir, Flat, Nome, Elim, and other villages, that it became regularly used as a means of supplying miners and settlements with mail and supplies, delivered by dog team. It also provided the route for gold to be sent out of Alaska when the Bering Sea was frozen, preventing ships from reaching Nome for months at a time. Dog sled teams carried gold to the ice-free bay at Seward to be loaded on ships there. Before the time of airplanes delivering mail and supplies to remote Alaskan areas, dog teams did the job. Alaskan Natives had been using dog teams in their way of life, a subsistence lifestyle which depended upon hunting, fishing, and gathering to provide food. Dog teams helped them travel, carry game they hunted, and carry food and water.

    The IDITAROD Alphabet By Annie Kelley McGuire 2017 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail The Iditarod Alphabet A is for Anchorage Anchorage is home to the ceremonial start of the Iditarod which takes place on the first Saturday of March every year. Usually 50-80 mushers sign up for the race. The ceremonial start takes place on 4th Street in downtown Anchorage. Thousands of people line the eleven mile stretch that mushers travel down. The Iditarod Alphabet B is for Booties Thousands of dog booties are used throughout the Iditarod. Each dog is required to wear dog booties, and a musher must keep an additional eight booties in his/her sled for each dog at all times. Booties are used to protect their feet from being scraped up and to keep balls of ice from collecting around the footpad. The Iditarod Alphabet C is for Checkpoint During the Iditarod there are 16 to 23 checkpoints during the race, depending on the year/route the mushers are taking. At the checkpoints mushers are able to rest and feed their dogs. They also take naps and check in with volunteers and fellow mushers. Mushers are required to take three breaks at different checkpoints along the way. They must take two 8-hour rests and one 24 hour rest. The Iditarod Alphabet D is for Dog Care The dogs of the Iditarod are some of the best cared for dogs in the world. Before the race each dog must be checked by a veterinarian. The veterinarians check the dogs for many things including heart health, proper hydration, and weight.

    FY 19 Iditarod National Historic Trail Annual Report BLM Anchorage Field Office, Alaska Overview The Iditarod Trail is the only winter trail in the National Trails System and the only Congressionally-designated National Historic Trail in Alaska. The Bureau of Land Management is the federal Trail Administrator of the entire Iditarod NHT system, with BLM’s Anchorage Field Office (AFO) handling this job since the Trail was designated by Congress in 1977. Half of the historic Trail is located on State of Alaska public lands, another 30% on public easements crossing private Native lands, and 20% is located on federal Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service lands. (BLM lands are shown in orange on the map of the Trail system to the right.) As the designated Trail Administrator, BLM facilitates efforts by volunteers and local, state, and federal agencies on behalf of the entire trail. Work is guided by an interagency comprehensive plan developed and adopted in the mid 1980’s. Along with administering the system, BLM maintains about 200 miles of the Trail, including five public shelter cabins on the route. The portion of the main trail on BLM lands is managed as part of BLM's National Conservation Lands.
