sUMMER 2017 • Volume 26 • Number 2 Welcome Home “Son, we’re moving to Oregon.” Hearing these words as a high school freshman in sunny Southern California felt – to a sensitive teenager – like cruel and unusual punishment. Save for an 8-bit Oregon Trail video game that always ended with my player dying of dysentery, I knew nothing of this “Oregon.” As proponents extolled the virtues of Oregon’s picturesque Cascade Mountains, I couldn’t help but mourn the mountains I was leaving behind: Space, Big Thunder and the Matterhorn (to say nothing of Splash, which would open just months after our move). I was determined to be miserable. But soon, like a 1990s Tom Hanks character trying to avoid falling in love with Meg Ryan, I succumbed to the allure of the Pacific Northwest. I learned to ride a lawnmower (not without incident), adopted a pygmy goat and found myself enjoying things called “hikes” (like scenic drives without the car). I rafted white water, ate pink salmon and (at legal age) acquired a taste for lemon wedges in locally produced organic beer. I became an obnoxiously proud Oregonian. So it stands to reason that, as adulthood led me back to Disney by way of Central Florida, I had a special fondness for Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Inspired by the real grandeur of the Northwest but polished in a way that’s unmistakably Disney, it’s a place that feels perhaps less like the Oregon I knew and more like the Oregon I prefer to remember (while also being much closer to Space Mountain).

  • Our Liberty Dollar Raid Update
Our Liberty Dollar Raid Update Jeff Taylor reason.org November 16, 2007 Updating from the previous post on the topic, the FBI did indeed raid the Liberty Dollar office in Indiana on Wednesday. Documents filed in U.S. District Court in North Carolina indicate that the raid was the culmination of a two-year undercover investigation of Liberty Dollar and its officers. According to an affidavit (PDF) filed by FBI agent Andrew Romagnuolo in support of a federal seizure warrant obtained from a U.S. Magistrate last week, the feds have been investigating Liberty Dollar not just for violating federal bans on circulating alternative currency, but also for mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. As for the mysterious connection to the Western District of North Carolina, the document names William Innes of Asheville as a Regional Currency Officer for Liberty Dollar and an executive committee member of the company. Undercover government agents made Asheville a focus of their investigation as a result, attending area meetings of Liberty Dollar prospective buyers and sellers. The affidavit further details Liberty Dollar's structure and terms it a "multi-level marketing scheme." The FBI claims the company realizes a profit by selling the Liberty Dollars into circulation. The feds also went back to October 2002 for bank records of Liberty Dollar principals and cite large sums of cash moving between accounts said to be controlled by those individuals. The document also mentions that the company continued to circulate Liberty Dollars after it had been warned by the US Mint not to do so.

Private Money: if You Were a Merchant, Would You Accept These Coins - June 01, 2006 Albuquerque Journal, By Andrew Webb Private Money: if You Were a Merchant, Would You Accept These Coins? By: Andrew Webb Staff Reporter The Albuquerque Journal - Sunday, June 11 2006 Remember being told as a kid that the United States' currency is backed by stacks of gleaming gold bricks buried in Fort Knox? That hasn't been true since at least 1971. But a small group of New Mexicans are part of a nationwide network of business owners, consumers and money hobbyists who use an 8-year-old private currency, which they say is backed by guarded precious metal in an Idaho warehouse, called the Liberty Dollar. Some call it funny money— indeed, from time to time, news reports circulate about someone being arrested for passing what police initially think are counterfeit coins. Banks won't take them, and most coin dealers dismiss Liberty Dollars as little more than a multilevel marketing scam. But Liberty Dollar backers say they'll have the last laugh when the plummeting value of the U.S. currency leaves unsuspecting Americans holding money whose value is little more than the paper it's printed on. "The federal Constitution states that no state shall use anything but silver or gold in payment or debt, but look where we are today— it's all just paper," says Michael Lunnon, owner and operator of a Gallup-based franchise of The UPS Store, a copy and mailing shop. Lunnon is one of two New Mexico distributors, or regional currency officers, for the Liberty Dollar.

CHAPTER 112 Money and Prices Key Concepts Hyperinfl ation Monetarism Neutrality of Money Infl ation Money Multiplier Quantity Theory Infl ation Tax Money Supply Seignorage Overview This chapter focuses on the nominal side of the economy: money and prices. We examine the historical behaviour of prices and the surge in infl ation that occurred in the twentieth century. We consider how to measure the price level and the rate of infl ation and compare their different meanings. We discuss why policymakers want to control infl ation and the costs of infl ation. Money is intimately linked to prices – after all, we quote prices of goods and services in terms of money. We review the historical development of money – from commodity money to paper money – and examine how governments and the banking sector create money and credit. We then consider the interaction between money and inflation. We first discuss hyperinflations – inflations of more than 50% per month – and show that they really always originate in fiscal policy, when governments print money to finance their activities. We review the concepts of seignorage and the inflation tax and compare them across countries. We then discuss a more general link between money and inflation and outline the quantity theory, which forms the basis of monetarism: the idea that inflation can be controlled by controlling the money supply. 282 cc12.indd12.indd 228282 110/01/120/01/12 88:56:56 AAMM CHAPTER 12 MONEY AND PRICES 283 12.1 Rising Prices THE HISTORICAL RECORD Although historical evidence regarding the scale of economic activity is often obscure, we have much more evidence about the price of different items.

  • Spring2014 • Volume23 • Number1 Welcome Home
spring2014 • Volume23 • Number1 welcOme home. Shrouded in darkness, concealed with caution tape and faintly smelling of commercial-grade latex, my workspace on a recent morning had all the makings of a crime scene investigation, minus the actual crime. (Seems the ridicule of an innocent man on the occasion of his 40th birthday is still legal in this country.) Picture the children’s-play-area ball pit at your local pizza joint or fast-food establishment, only with more insults and (slightly) less bacteria. “Friends” had engulfed my desk in a sea of black balloons, each emblazoned with a different dig from a clever co-worker. Excavating the area like a young Indiana Jones, I read everything from “our interns were born when you were in high school” to “you know you’re 40 when someone offers you a seat on the monorail…and you don’t refuse.” While I may have been surprised (and, truth be told, delighted) by the extremity of the effort, I wasn’t surprised by the effort itself. Having now been part of the Disney Vacation Club Cast family for the better part of a decade, I know how much this team loves to celebrate. From births to birthdays, awards to anniversaries, changes in our community to changes in humidity, rare is the month that doesn’t bring cause for celebration. We’re even headquartered in a town called Celebration. Our passion for celebrating what – and who – we appreciate should come in quite handy this year, as Disney Vacation Club rolls out Membership Magic, a vibrant array of Membership enhancements, exclusive experiences and special offers.
