  • New Broncos Coach Vic Fangio Is Old-School Tough. but Is He Tough Enough to Take No Guff from John Elway? by Mark Kiszla the Denver Post January 10, 2019
New Broncos coach Vic Fangio is old-school tough. But is he tough enough to take no guff from John Elway? By Mark Kiszla The Denver Post January 10, 2019 Vic Fangio knows rock-solid defense. No doubt. But does Fangio know what he’s getting into as the next coach of the Broncos? At age 60, Fangio has not only been around the NFL block, but gotten dirty in the trenches. During his 32 years of coaching in the league, he has undoubtedly worked for good bosses and bosses from the wrong side of the River Styx. The naïve don’t survive in this tough business. But has Fangio ever had a boss like John Elway? Fangio knows how to get the best out of superstar linebacker Von Miller, if how Khalil Mack wreaked havoc for the top-ranked Chicago Bears defense in 2018 is any indication. The Broncos wouldn’t dare hire Fangio, who toiled 19 seasons as a defensive coordinator before finally getting his first chance to run his own NFL shop, only to trade the Vonster. Would they? Fangio is old-school tough. But is he tough enough to take no guff from Elway? Fangio is a man of few words. But he knows the secrets of winning. When Fangio did wonders for the San Francisco defense from 2011-14, then 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh proclaimed: “I think he’s one of the all- time best defensive coordinators in the history of the league. I think that’s who he is. I think that’s what his legacy will be someday.” So if what Fangio brings to Denver is Wade Phillips without the corn pone jokes, that wouldn’t be a bad deal, would it? (We won’t mention Phillips went 16-16 and was fired after two years as Denver’s head coach back in the 1990s, when being a .500 football team looked a whole lot worse than it would now to Broncos Country.) Men of a certain age, especially ones obsessed with winning, are in a hurry, because they hear the clock ticking.

Important Information 2014 Free Agent Combine Results Coach Zauner’s 6th Annual - Free Agent Specialist’s Combine March 10 - 11, 2014 Gilbert, Arizona From Coach Zauner: Event and Weather Conditions: I am pleased to announce the 6th Annual Free Agent Specialist’s Combine yielded a field of 75 kicking specialists. It is my goal to make sure this event is comprised of the highest caliber specialists, so only those individuals I had worked with, evaluated and invited were allowed to compete. I conduct an 'evaluation' process each year to ensure the 'quality' of kicking specialists participating meets -or exceeds- the needs of the teams attending. The event started on Monday at 3:45 PM at Campo Verde High School located in Gilbert, AZ on an outdoor field turf with snappers testing until 5:45 PM. On Tuesday morning punters started their testing at 8:45 AM with open field punts with a temperature of 68° and a slight breeze of 2-3 mph. At 11:45 AM, kickers started with kickoffs with temperatures of 76-82° and still a slight breeze of 2-3 mph. Equipment: For this Combine I used brand new NFL (K) balls at regulation pressure. To me, and to all NFL coaches I know, the only way to effectively evaluate a kicking specialist’s ability during a private workout or in a Combine event is to have them perform with with brand new NFL (K) balls. Summary: In all, 75 kicking specialists attended the event. Results -STATS- of all participating kicking specialists have been emailed to each specialist in addition to the (27) NFL, (2) CFL and (1) AFL teams attending the 2014 Free Agent Combine.

He joined the Dolphins as assistant special teams coach in 2009. Since becoming special teams coordinator in 2011, his units are second in the NFL with 20 blocked kicks. During his Dolphins tenure, three special teams players (long snapper John Denney [twice], punter Brandon Fields and kicker Dan Carpenter) have been named to the Pro Bowl. Rizzi has coached four players to the NFL All-Rookie team in the past five years. Punter Matt Darr earned All-Rookie honors in 2015, kick returner Jarvis Landry in 2014 and kicker Caleb Sturgis and special-teamer Don Jones in 2013. Rizzi’s units have ranked in the top half of Rick Gosselin’s annual Dallas Morning News Special Teams rankings in all seven years that he has served as the Dolphins’ special teams coordinator. In 2017, the Dolphins were tied for second in the NFL with three blocked kicks – two field goals and one punt. Kicker Cody Parkey tied a team field goal percentage record by converting 21-of-23 attempts (91.3 pct.), including a 54-yard game-winner in the season opener at L.A. Chargers (9/17), the longest game-winner in team history. Parkey also successfully converted four onside kicks, the most in NFL history since records date back to 1997. Miami’s kickoff coverage unit was the best in the NFL, forcing opponents to start on average at their own 23-yard line after kickoffs.
