A History of Bourke

To most rural Australians, the '' is always 'further out'. There can be no doubt, however, that when you arrive at Bourke, what Henry Lawson called "the Metropolis of the Great Scrubs", and cross the you are in the REAL outback.

Located 789 km north west of , Bourke is situated on the Darling River 110 m above sea level. It is, by any measure, a thriving country town with a population around 3500 and a sense of prosperity which is the result of its geographic importance as the centre of a large wool, cotton and citrus area.

Charles Sturt passed through the district in 1828 and accompanied by Hamilton Hume, reached the Darling River (Sturt named the river after Sir , Governor of NSW at the time) about 30 km north of the present town site and they followed the river downstream for about 100 km.

It wasn't until 1835 that Sir Thomas Mitchell returned to the area and constructed a fort about 13 km south of the town site. Mitchell had bad relations with the local Aborigines and he felt a fort was suitable protection against their attacks. It was named Fort Bourke after the governor of NSW, Sir (1777-1855). Eventually the district and later the town came to be known by this name.

Fort Bourke was short-lived but it did establish the possibility of settlement in the area and over the next decade pastoralists moved into the area. It was marginal land and few prospered. However the history of the district changed dramatically when, in 1859, Captain W. R. Randall sailed the Gemini up the Darling from . Suddenly Bourke and Brewarrina and other centres along the river became vital transport nodes. For decades Bourke was the transport centre for the whole of south west and western NSW. Its port was the only efficient way to transport wool to the coastal markets and at its height in the late 1800s over 40 000 bales of wool were being shipped down the Darling annually. The river transport continued until the last commercial riverboat in 1931.

In 1862 the township was surveyed and the first businesses - 'Bourke Store' and 'Bourke' Hotel - were established. That same year, the town's first court case - a bushranging charge - was conducted in the open air. This was a boom time for the town with large landholdings being taken up by optimistic graziers. The unreliability of the rainfall - it averages 340 mm but is likely to vary from 150 mm one year to 800 mm the next - forced many of the optimists out of the area.

Generations of Australians have talked about the “back of Bourke” as the edge of the great unknown, but visitors will be surprised to learn that Bourke itself is a fascinating and exciting inland town with a rich historical tradition. In the 1800s, the poet Henry Lawson wrote: “If you know Bourke, you know Australia”, and there’s still some truth to it.

Bourke still retains much of its heritage, with places of historical importance having been well preserved. Whether the Darling is at its lowest ebb or brimming with life, Bourke is a fascinating place to spend some time.

A History of Brewarrina

There are few more charming outback towns in Australia than Brewarrina. With a town population of about 1500 and a further 1500 living on properties around the town it has just the right number of people to give it a sense of purpose and stability without losing the lazy rural character which hasn't changed for decades. The wide main street, the old style pubs, the easy lifestyle, the beautiful parks by the Darling - Barwon River, the local newspaper produced fortnightly by the local Chamber of Commerce and the historic court house and Anglican Church make it much more than just another country town.

No one knows exactly what the word 'Brewarrina' means. There are five versions all of which have some claim to accuracy. The most common is 'clumps of acacias' then there is 'where the gooseberry grows', 'fishing', 'acacia clumps' and, perhaps the most plausible, 'place of gooseberries' coming from 'warrina' meaning 'place of' and 'bre' or 'burie' or 'biree' meaning 'gooseberries'.

The first settlers arrived in the district around 1839-40. The first people to own land where the town now stands were the Lawson brothers who had two holdings - one called 'Walcha' and another called 'Moona'. The first name given to the settlement was 'Walcha Hut' but this later changed to 'Fishery' and finally to 'Brewarrina'. In 1859 a riverboat called Gemini skippered by William Randell reached the town. This opened up the possibility of the town developing as a port and by the early 1860s it was recognised as the head of navigation on the Darling River. The town was formally surveyed and laid out in 1861 and proclaimed on 28 April 1863.

The 1870s were something of a boom time for the town. In 1873 the Mechanics Institute was formed. The following year two hotels, two stores and the Commercial Bank all opened and in 1875 a public school was established. All this development was largely due to Cobb & Co. who had a number of coach services passing through the town. There was a service from Byrock, one from via Warren and, in 1874, a direct service from Brewarrina to Enngonia north of Bourke. The number of people moving through the town at this time would have been considerable and would have given rise to the increase in stores and hotels.

For thousands of years, the area was a meeting place for many Aboriginal language groups. Stone fisheries were built on the bed of the Darling River (just downstream from the present-day weir) to catch fish for the people coming to the vast gatherings. Estimates have suggested that the fisheries are up to 40,000 years old. Today, fishing and other water sports flourish in the area. The Narran Lakes Nature Reserve, 50 km north-east of Brewarrina, covers about 50,000 hectares.

A History of Cobar

Cobar is a major centre between Dubbo and . Cobar is one of those deceptive country towns which can be driven through by those unaware of its charms and can be a fascinating experience for those who pause to see the superb museum, the old mines, and the gracious homes and public buildings which are hidden in the streets which run off the main street.

Cobar was the site where the Aboriginals used to gather the red ochre, which they called gubar, to make paint for their corroborees. The colour was due to the copper in the soil.

Cobar is one of the few towns in Australia where there is a contemporary Aboriginal explanation for the origin of the town. It is said by the local Aborigines that 'gubar', the Aboriginal word for red ochre, was simply corrupted to the Anglicised 'Cobar'.

Pastoralists moved into the area in the mid-1860s and it was in 1870 that copper was discovered and the town of Cobar sprung up. By 1871 the townsite had been surveyed and by 1876 the main mines had amalgamated to form the Great Cobar Copper Mining Company. The mines continued to operate until 1920. The scale of the mining operation can be seen from the Museum where the substantial lake in front of the museum was once the open cut for the mine.

At its peak Cobar and the surrounding villages and camp sites had a population of over 10 000 people. It was so prosperous that it even had its own stock exchange.

Cobar's population dropped to a little over 1000 during the 1930s and rose again to stabilise at around 3500 through the 1970s and early 1980s. However the opening of a silver-lead-zinc mine in the early 1980s gave the town a boost so that now the population is about 7000.

The CSA Mine (the letters stand for Cornish, Scottish and Australian) is now ' largest producer of copper and zinc.

A History of Narromine Narromine was named after a word said to mean, 'place of many lizards' or 'place of honey'. The latter may be a reference to the fact that the local Aborigines tracked native bees to their nests by catching them, sticking a portion of down to their backs and releasing them. Thomas Mitchell marvelled both at their ingenuity in this respect and at the seemingly endless supplies of honey available. These bees apparently had no sting and were rendered extinct either by competition or interbreeding with introduced species.

Narromine promotes itself as the 'Town of Champions' due to the fact that a number of well-known sportspersons were born here, including sprinter Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, cricketer Glenn McGrath and footballer David Gillespie. The Narromine silo, owned by the New South Wales Grain Corporation, dominates the town. Wheat, citrus, fruit, vegetables, fat lambs, wool and especially cotton are the economic focus of the shire.

The area was occupied by tribes of the Wiradjuri people prior to white settlement. John Oxley passed through the district in 1818 during his exploration of the . Squatters entered the area in the 1830s and settled along the river. 'Narramine' station was taken up in 1835. For many years it was held by William Charles Wentworth, who was one of the first party of Europeans to cross the Blue Mountains in 1813.

Although a government reserve had been made in 1849 but there was little in the way of a settlement until the railway arrived in 1882. At that time, William O'Neil was the owner of 'Narramine' and he had established a hotel at the junction of the to Trangie (now the Mitchell ) and the road to Warren.

The township developed around the railway on land resumed from O'Neil. It was laid out and gazetted in 1883. The streets were named after early pastoral holdings in the area. A pump station and pump attendant's house were built near the hotel to supply water to the trains at what was the last natural watering place before Bourke.

The first school opened in 1883. Narramine (sic) was declared a village in 1885. In 1890 a police station was built and O'Neil established a store near the railway. It closed in 1996 and has been converted into the present Bi-Lo supermarket.

The first newspaper was established in 1896 and the spelling of the town was changed from 'Narramine' to 'Narromine' owing to a misspelling by the paper's editor. The first bridge over the river was built in 1897. The following year the town was declared a municipality and a courthouse and lock-up were built adjoining the police station.

Wheat-growing and mixed farming developed as the larger properties were subdivided for closer settlement. Despite initial scepticism, the establishment of a citrus orchard in 1913 signified the start of another major local industry.

The Narromine aerodrome, constructed after World War I, is home to the oldest country aero club in the Australia. Over 2000 pilots lived and trained in Narromine during World War II. Visitors have included Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, Chuck Yeager and Nancy Bird Walton. It was used as a training station for pilots in World War II.

Narromine was the subject of Banjo Paterson's humorous poem 'The City of the Dreadful Thirst' which evokes the townsfolk's incurable sense of thirst which no amount of drinking will cure.

Narromine is currently home to the annual National Ultra-Light Fly-In Festival (NATFLY) which takes place every Easter weekend. Other annual events include the National Gliding Championships in January, the Easter Fishing Competition, the Picnic Races in April, the Mungery Muster B&S Ball in August, the Narromine Agricultural Show and the Mungery Picnic Races in September, the Chute Out Bullride in November and the NSW Gliding Championship in December.

A History of NynganNynganNyngan

Nyngan is a country town situated by the on the eastern edge of the Great Outback. It is located on the between Narromine and Bourke, 583 km north-west of Sydney. Wool, wheat and cattle are the primary local produce in what is a very productive pastoral and agricultural shire.

The district was originally inhabited by the Ngiyambaa Aborigines. Thomas Mitchell explored the Bogan River in 1835, camping on the future townsite. He recorded the local Aboriginal word 'nyingan', said to mean 'long pond of water', though other meanings have been put forward. Squatters had settled in Mitchell's wake before he had even begun the return journey.

Nyngan was gazetted as a reserve for water in 1865 but a townsite was not reserved until 1880. It was surveyed in 1882 when the Dubbo-Bourke railway was under construction. The track arrived in Nyngan the following year.

By this time the initial emphasis on cattle had been balanced by the grazing of merino sheep for their wool. Wheat-growing also began in the 1880s although unreliable rainfall has always been a problem, as the Bogan only flows after rain. The town received a secure water supply in 1942 when water was relayed along a 62-km canal from the Macquarie River.

Nyngan became a municipality in 1891. A meatworks developed on the outskirts of town in the 1890s for the boiling down of sheep and an experimental farm was established in 1910 to further wheat cultivation.

Nyngan, little known in the east, entered the national psyche in 1990 when it was deluged with the worst floods of the century. The townspeople laid 260 000 sandbags on top of the established levee but the waters inundated the entire town, causing $50 million worth of damage and necessitating the airlift by helicopter of 2000 citizens, virtually the entire population. A national relief fund was established to help the town recover.

A History of Tottenham

Tottenham has a population of 320 and a district of approximately 1000. The village of Tottenham was established as a result of the discovery of copper in the early 1900's. The town now depends on a large diverse Agricultural Industry for its economic sustainability.

Tottenham is the closest village to the geographical centre of NSW. The centre of NSW Cairn, which was constructed using SLAG from old Mount Royal and the Bogan River Copper Mines, is located 42kms West of town.

This small rural community enjoys a very relaxed lifestyle. There is a very strong civic pride which has been rewarded with many Tidy Towns Award successes including Category A "Overall Winner" in 2002, 2004 and 2007.

The town is very proud of its appearance with beautiful streets and gardens. The public and sporting facilities are also a feature. The racecourse is recognised as an outstanding venue with beautiful lawns and gardens and immaculate buildings. The local swimming pool, preschool, memorial park, tennis courts, bowling club, and golf club are all outstanding facilities.

For Bird Watchers the bird life around Tottenham is prolific. Over 160 species of birds have been recorded including Red Winged Parrot, Painted Honeyeater, and Black Falcon. The many small State Forest areas around the town have great natural habitat for enjoying this activity.

A History of Trangie

Trangie is small country service centre of 1100 people, situated 6 hours from Sydney and 50 minutes from Dubbo. It is located on the main western railway line and on the Mitchell Highway, between Narromine (35 km south-east) and Nyngan (90 km north-west).

The townscape is dominated by the Trangie silo - a testimony to the importance of wheat to the . There are weekly cattle sales and vast cotton fields outside the town. Sheep, wool and sorghum are also important to the shire's economy.

The area is thought to have been occupied by the Wongaibon Aborigines prior to white settlement. 'Trangie' is an indigenous word said to mean 'quick'.

The town later developed on 'Weemaabah' station, established, presumably, in the 1830s. It was used for the grazing of cattle and, later, for sheep-grazing and horse-breeding.

The Cobb & Co. coach service from Dubbo to Bourke passed through the property and stopped at the Swinging Gate Hotel, up-river. However, a township did not develop until the railway arrived in 1882, en route from Dubbo to . Local wool producers benefited greatly from the improved transportation.

In 1909 an experimental farm was established to develop wheat-growing and the breeding of merino sheep. An Angus beef cattle stud was established in 1929. The Saleyards were built in the 1940s and the first wheat silo was erected in 1962. Local agriculture expanded when Burrendong Dam was completed in 1967.

A History of Tullamore

Tullamore is nestled in an area northwest of Parkes, south west of Dubbo and north east of Condobolin. The area was first settled as Bullock Creek in 1870 and was later called Gobondery. In 1895 Jim Tully, (originally from the Tullamore area in Ireland) built a hotel and named it "Tullie's Exchange Hotel". The Kerley family (who also came from a small community just outside of Tullamore in Ireland) settled on a nearby property called Tullamore Station and it is believed that the Town obtained its name from the nearby property. Tullamore has strong Irish links with a large number of settlers moving into the area in the 1900's. Today, the community retains these links with around 70-80% of the community having family connections with Ireland.

Tullamore and its community lies with equal portions in the Parkes and Lachlan shires, with the town itself on the boundary of Parkes shire. The community population is approximately 680. The town has all the essential services, such as a central school, doctor, and Multi Purpose Health Service.

Agriculture is the main industry for the Tullamore area. In the past the mining of gold and its associated minerals took place in the nearby Fifield area. Magnesite was later mined for many years. In recent times nickel deposits have been found, and may become viable to mine in the future.

The ancestors of the Wiradjuri people occupied the area prior to European settlement. There are many signs of their lifestyle in the area and some of these are within the care of local Wiradjuri groups.

Tullamore area has a substantial area of native vegetation with all the associated native animals, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, echidnas, goannas and snakes. There are also many bird species in the area.

There is a strong community spirit in Tullamore and the town has been remarkably successful in recent years, winning several regional and state awards.

• Inland NSW Tourism Awards for an Event (2006) - Finalist • Regional Community & Business Awards - Community of the year for a community under 15000 (2006) – in the Final Three • Keep Australia Beautiful Awards - Highly Commended • Bush Spirit Award – Town under 300 (2006) • Tidy Town - Town under 300 (2006) • 2006 Tullamore Irish Festival – a tourism NSW Flagship Event

A History of Wanaaring

On the banks on the Paroo River, 240 kilometres to the east of Tibooburra, and 195 kilometres north west of the Darling River township of Bourke, is the village of Wanaaring.

Established in the 1880's, the town provided services to the large sheep properties of the time. Once, wool scouring, or wool washing, was carried out on the banks of the river. Long gone, reminders of those times can be found amongst the memorabilia on the river banks.

Today, the township today provides services to the outlying station properties, and to the travelers passing this way, to or from the Corner Country.

13 A Better Life THE CENTRE Australia’s OF Wool NSW & Cotton Capital

A History of WarrenWarrenWarren

Warren is dominated by sheep and cotton. Merino sheep have long been bred locally and there is an Auscott Cotton Gin just out of town. Other local produce includes wheat, oats, sorghum and maize.

Before European settlement the area is said to have been occupied by the Ngiyambaa Aborigines. Explorer John Oxley camped on the present townsite during his investigation of the Macquarie River in 1818. He noted an abundance of kangaroos and emus. carried out further exploration in 1828-29. Cattle were grazing hereabouts by the late 1830s.

Warren station was established in 1845 by Thomas Readford and William Lawson, the son of explorer William Lawson who was a member of the first European party to breach the Blue Mountains in 1813. Some say the name derives from a local Aboriginal word, meaning 'strong' or 'substantial'. Another theory is that it represents the adoption of a contemporary English term, 'warren', meaning a game park - perhaps a reference to the picturesque riverside setting where the station hut was built (on what is now Macquarie Park) and to the large numbers of wildlife in the area.

A small police station was built near the hut to protect the new settlers from Aborigines but, there being no disturbance, they soon moved on. The hut was located by the site of a river-crossing on the main route from Dubbo. Stockmen camped here in the bend by the river, adjacent the Warren Hole (a natural and permanent waterhole), before crossing over on the gravel bar when the water was sufficiently low. A few stayed on and a site for a township was consequently surveyed in 1860 with land sales proceeding in 1861. By that time sheep were replacing cattle in the district and some notable merino studs, such as Haddon Rig (now a farmstay), were established. Although the soil was fertile the scorching heat rendered agriculture problematic.

A post office opened in 1861, a bootmaker's shop, made of bark, in 1863, a store in 1866, a school in 1867, an Anglican Church in 1873, the first courthouse in 1874 and the first bridge in 1875. However, closer settlement did not really develop until the late 1880s. Warren was incorporated as a municipality in 1895 and the Warren Weir was established in 1896. The town benefited greatly with the arrival of the railway in 1898, making it the railhead for an enormous area. In general terms, its prosperity rose and fell with the price of wool. In the 1920s the town developed quite substantially. In the Great Depression the economy shrank, expanding again in the postwar years.

Main Industry of the Region

Bourke/Wanaaring is located in north western NSW and covers an area of over 40,000 km+. The township of Bourke sits at the junction of three highways, the , Mitchell Highway and .

The Shire's main industries include cotton, soft fruit, citrus, cattle production, irrigated wheat, wild goat and kangaroo harvesting, and of course the wool industry, part of the Bourke area since the 1860s.

Traditionally a wool growing area, Bourke was once the biggest wool railhead in the world. Today, while wool is still grown, cotton has taken over as the major industry. There are two cotton gins in Bourke which feature the latest technology in ginning processes. The cotton industry is a main source of direct "on farm" employment and indirect employment through businesses established to service the industry. The industry continues to expand.

Bourke also boasts a thriving horticultural industry, which produces an abundance of grapes, citrus, plums, apricots and melon as well as a variety of vegetable crops. Opportunities to establish new enterprises based on this growing industry are being explored. Value adding industries are particularly being sought and would stimulate local growth in this area.

Alternative native crops such as peanuts, jojoba and the unique Napunya honey are also produced in the area. Such industry diversification and further development will necessitate new and improved freight handling facilities, transport services as well as marketing and production expertise.

Like many small towns the population has remained more or less the same for a number of years. Employment is predominantly in the rural sector although employment in tourism, retail and associated industries continues to grow.

Brewarrina The agricultural sector of the Brewarrina community is a strong and established sector of the community. Brewarrina is a major producer of wool and livestock within the state. Brewarrina is constantly developing and expanding its agricultural industry with cotton and wheat becoming integral industries within the region.

Cobar Mining has long been the lifeblood of Cobar, and the wealth that followed its discovery influenced the many fine buildings still in existence. Among the many reminders of its past glory is the Great Cobar Open Cut, originally an open-cut 150-m deep mine but now a local swimming hole. Cobar’s large number of mining attractions is a testimony to the township’s extensive mining history. Mining is the main industry in Cobar with three major mines in operation, producing gold, copper silver and zinc.

Cobar Shire is in a semi arid region, which also supports sheep and cattle grazing.

Narromine/Tottenham/Trangie With its rich, fertile soil wheat, citrus, fruit, vegetables, fat lambs, wool and especially cotton are the economic focus of the shire. Orchards and flower farms are also in abundance in the district, making agriculture the main industry for the region.

With some of the best thermals in the world, Narromine is a well regarded aviation destination, making it a strong industry in the town. The town is rich in aviation history, claiming the country’s oldest regional aero club. Narromine is currently home to the annual National Ultra-Light Fly-In Festival (NATFLY) which takes place every Easter weekend. Other annual events include the National Gliding Championships in January and the NSW Gliding Championship in December.

Nyngan/Tullamore Nyngan is the administrative centre of the , one of the states wealthiest pastoral districts, with wool, wheat and cattle as its primary produce. The Bogan River is the Shire’s main watercourse and this along with the many creeks provides abundant water for both irrigation and stock and domestic supplies.

The Shire has an abundance of productive agricultural land for sheep and cattle production and large scale cropping enterprises.

Nyngan’s farmers are highly competitive on local and international, markets and the large quantity of agricultural produce is conducive to the development of value adding industries and marketing ventures.

31 A Better Life THE CENTRE Australia’s OF Wool NSW & Cotton Capital

The comparatively low cost of land, buildings, rates, rent, labour and the close proximity to an extensive range of raw materials makes the Shire attractive to many manufacturing industries. Existing manufacturing industries include: welding, engineering, concreting, saw milling, and the servicing of agriculture and mining machinery. Whilst employment in Nyngan remains heavily dependant on agriculture other major sectors are mining, community services, retail, financial and business services, public administration and communication.

Warren The Macquarie Marshes, one of the most significant wetland complex in Australia, are located 50 km north of Warren, and are listed on the Ramsar Convention as a wetland area of international importance.

The Shire also boasts many internationally renowned Merino Studs such as Haddon Rig, Raby and Egelabra, just to name a few. The area is extremely flat except for occasional granite outcrops, the largest being Mt Foster (250m) and Mt Harris (240m). Both of these are in a close proximity and are offshoots of the Warrumbungle Range, which may be seen in the distance.

The main industry of Warren is the Pastoral and agricultural farms in the district. The runs along the Macquarie River were first stocked entirely with cattle. The first sheep stations were established about 1879. Now Warren boasts large sheep stations, some of which are Mumblebone, Haddon Rig, Egelabra, Raby, Buttabone, Stud Park and Eeaweena. Cotton and Wheat are the two main crops grown in the area.

The Country Careers Program

Help for New Staff

The Country Careers Program is a new program that has been funded by NSW Health for the next four years to help with the retention of new staff moving into each Area Health Service.

Catherine Deverell is the Country Careers Coordinator for the Greater Western Area Health Service. The role of the program is to contact new Doctors, Allied Health Professionals and Nurses in difficult to recruit to locations as soon as they have been chosen as the preferred applicant for a position and to assist these new staff, who are moving to a new town, to find rental accommodation; schools for their children; help in networking with local businesses to find work for partners or spouses; finding a sporting or community group they might like to join; etc.

Country Careers is about helping the new staff enter into the community they are moving to and to help them feel welcome and valued as a community member.

The Institute of Rural Clinical Services and Teaching (IRCST)

The Institute of Rural Clinical Services and Teaching (IRCST) was formed in 2003 following recommendations from the NSW Health Plan (2002). It aims to support rural clinicians across all stages of their careers and promote good practice in rural health service delivery.

It is a "virtual institute" with staff working across NSW. The current Executive Director, Ms Linda Cutler, is based in Dubbo.

IRCST provides a range of opportunities to rural and remote health staff:

• NSW Rural Research Capacity Building Program – each year IRCST accepts up to 30 candidates from rural and remote area health services to undertake a research project. Successful candidates participate in a research methods short course, conducted in Sydney by the NSW Primary Health Care Collaboration; are provided with a paid backfill day each week for a two year period; and are linked with mentors who have an interest or experience in the topic or methods required for the project. Applications are usually called in May each year. • NSW Health Awards Sponsorship – each year IRCST sponsors up to 40 rural and remote health staff to attend the Health Expo which exposes them to a range of continuous quality improvement projects from across the state.

IRCST also conducts a major conference, in a rural location, each year: • NSW Rural Allied Health Conference – held in Dubbo during October 2007, this conference attracts allied health professionals from rural and remote NSW to share valuable experiences and raise issues facing allied health practitioners. This conference is held biennially. • NSW Rural and Remote Health Conference – held in Coffs Harbour during November 2008, this conference attracts health professionals from a range of disciplines, with a view to working together to improve rural and remote health and health services. This conference is held biennially.

Some of IRCST’s other projects include:

• NSW Rural Stroke Project • NSW Rural Rehabilitation Clinician Network Project • NSW Rural Allied Health Project • Biostatistician Trainee • Chair in Rural Pharmacy

From time to time IRCST calls for submissions for research or service improvement projects which meet the objectives of the IRCST business plan.

The IRCST website provides additional information on all of the above, as well as any emerging projects. You can also sign up to the IRCST webgroup, and you’ll be notified of upcoming events, funding opportunities, sponsorships and new initiatives. Log onto: www.ircst.health.nsw.gov.au
