    The Guitar of the Czars The Guitar of the Czars a new English summary redaction by Marco Bazzotti This is a revision of an article of mine published in the Italian bimonthly "Seicorde" [ Note 1 ], a guitar magazine that ended its life in 1995. To my knowledge it was the first article about this subject published in the Italian language (after the most significant article by Matanya Ophee in a concurrent magazine, which was published some 7 years before mine [ Note 2 ]). I was induced to republish it in English not only to make it available to a wider audience, but also because for editorial purposes part of the original text and all the end notes were cut in the first publication, so I could not give due credit to my references. But it was my first published article, so I was glad for it to appear anyhow. Some years later I noticed also that some of the information contained therein was not completely exact. I decided to leave the text in a form close to its first version, cutting only the interviews with the Russian guitarist M. Goldort and Italian Professor P. Bonaguri, these now having become dated. I preferred to replace almost all the accompanying images with new ones that I have discovered in the following years.     The Brazilian seven-string guitar: Traditions, techniques and innovations Adam John May Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Music - Musicology/Ethnomusicology (with course work component) September 2013 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper i Abstract Since the early 1980s a new and unique repertoire has emerged for the seven-string guitar, known in Portuguese as the violão de sete-cordas, a Brazilian instrument typically played in choro ensembles. This thesis demonstrates, through musical analysis, that this new repertoire is a result of two converging musical influences, both the Brazilian six-string guitar repertoire and the traditional accompaniment role of the seven-string guitar in choro ensembles. Choro is a genre of Brazilian instrumental music that developed in Rio de Janeiro during the late nineteenth century and continues to be played throughout Brazil, as well as gaining popularity in other parts of the world. The Brazilian seven-string guitar emerged in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the twentieth-century; photographic evidence and recordings confirm that it was included in choro ensembles as early as the 1910s. Traditionally strung with steel strings and played using a metal thumb-pick, the instrument provides a counterpoint accompaniment line that is generally improvised. In the early 1980s a small number of musicians experimented with the use of nylon strings; this resulted in timbral variations and greater expressive qualities similar to the standard classical guitar. Guitarists began to use this new version of the seven-string guitar as a solo instrument, as well as in other musical settings outside of typical choro groups; this significant development is referred to as the duas escolas or two schools of performance practice.

All 30 compositions come from a single manuscript album that the composer dedicated and presented to his student Alexander Maximov. This was a fateful musical offering, because in 1945 Pavlov was thrown into one of Stalin’s “correctional colonies” and all of his possessions, including all the sheet music, were confiscated and/or destroyed. Since this album was not in his possession at the time, it survived. The present two volumes will give a contemporary guitarist a chance to explore a rather daring slice of Russian guitar culture. At times more traditional, at times evoking modernist and constructivist aesthetics, Pavlov-Azancheev’s music will sound fresh and energetic in today’s concerts – so let it be performed, studied, and recorded. A Sleeping Giant Roused Stanley Yates © 2017 The past 40 years have witnessed a significant reappraisal of the historical guitar repertoire. Through the release of a multitude of facsimile editions of collected works, along with several survey recordings and a number of academic studies, the music of figures such as Mertz, Regondi, Coste, even Giuliani and Sor (whose music we thought we knew well), along with others whose music we were not so long ago happily oblivious to, is now well appreciated. The same can be said for much of our seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century repertoires (though certainly not all of it). All of this refers to the Western European guitar. While one remaining gap in our general knowledge of the European repertoire lies in the appraisal of the music of the late eighteenth-century, a further even lesser known and perhaps even more deserving repertoire still awaits our broad appreciation: that written in Russia during the early to mid-nineteenth century for the guitar with seven open-tuned strings. The Russian repertoire is interesting for a number of reasons, not least of which are its unique musical- expressive qualities and highly idiomatic approach to guitar music making. While almost always the case in the West, the Russian guitarists only sometimes based their originally composed solo music on pre-existing instrumental models (usually pianistic, much less so violinistic or string-chamber-orchestral).
