ANGEL FESTIVAL 2011

ORGANISED BY THE PARISH OF SOMBORNE WITH ASHLEY 11-25 SEPTEMBER 2011 On Sunday 25 September 2011 we will be celebrating Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael and All Angels. The idea of an Angel Festival and a Giving Day seems a very fitting way to celebrate Michaelmas. We would very much love to fill the Church with Angels as well as to see lots of Angels around the village. You can help support this event in various ways. You could make an Angel and display it where you live, or where you work, or in the Church. You could come to the Church on Sunday 25 September 2011 to hear a very special musical performance, enjoy some refreshments and see the Angels and support our Giving Day. You could pick up a trail plan between 11-25 September 2011 and see as many Angels around the village as you can fit in and then pick your favourite to win the People‟s Choice Award. Please do come and join in with our Angel Festival. Entry forms are available from the Church, or from Claire Bevan. Themes for the Angels are „Modern‟, „Historical‟ and „An Angel in a Historical Event‟. There are lots of categories to enter, including „most original‟, „recycled materials‟ and children‟s aged groups. Your Angels can be 2D or 3D. Children, families, local groups and businesses can all be involved.

(On Sunday 25 September 2011 there will be the normal Church services in the morning as well as „Alive‟ at 6.00pm.) (All proceeds of this event go to The Parish of Somborne with Ashley, half of which will be allocated to our new fund for a new sound system) 17

The Minister has the last word

Dear Friends, As I write this, I am planning a trip to Cornwall at the end of the week and I am conscious that many of you will have had your holiday or actually be away at the moment. However, by the beginning of September, most of our summer holidays will sadly be over for another year. I wonder how many of you found your holiday a good time to pray. Perhaps you went somewhere really beautiful or somewhere quiet and peaceful. Perhaps you visited a site of religious or spiritual significance and found it to have a prayerful ambience. Most of us don‘t choose our holiday destinations with prayer in mind and I include myself here, so I was quite surprised to read in one of the Saturday papers that holidays were considered a good time to pray! Of course, the word holiday is derived from holy day when people were given the day off to celebrate a special saint‘s day or other religious event and gradually coalesced to form longer periods of rest and recreation. In fact, it would be interesting to ask when most people pray, if in fact they do regularly. I think it‘s a bit like ‗death‘, it‘s one of the subjects we don‘t really talk about in personal terms. I remember asking Cynthia‘s mother one day in the car what hymns she wanted at her funeral. After a stony silence she asked me if I was trying to get rid of her! I had no problems with my mother except the list was too long to include them all, so we had to have a medley of them played when the time came. At my uncle‘s funeral last week I decided to leave out the Lord‘s prayer as time was short (Bournemouth Crematorium). I felt he would not have minded and it was more important that my cousin should not be rushed as she gave the eulogy. I have probably committed some awful theological error but it made me think what I would want at my funeral and if so why? In today‘s mail I received my professional journal (psychiatry) and in it there is a debate about praying with patients. One said it was unethical even if they wanted it. What are your views? ….A topic for the future? Trusting and praying you all had restful and or prayerful holidays, Yours in the service of Christ,
